Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cereal Rusts, Volume II: Diseases, Distribution, Epidemiology, and Control is a compendium of papers that aims to control cereal rusts through principles about the nature of the disease, as well as learned strategies toward its control. These papers deal with the major cereal rust diseases such as wheat and rye stem rust, wheat leaf rust, stripe rust, oat stem rust, barley leaf rust. Control of these types of rust diseases include cultural methods, barberry eradication, crop resistance, fungicides, and ecological controls. One paper notes that cultivars, a plant variety developed through selective breeding, should be used. The key to its development with long-lasting resistance is diversity, namely, genetic diversity in resistance types, and diversity in its strategic development, including a combination of race-specific with non-race specific resistance. For example, Parlevliet has pointed out that in natural ecosystems, race-specific resistance can protect the host plant by rendering the pathogen population less aggressive. One paper also examines the use of chemicals for rust disease control in the United States. This compendium is ideally suited for the cytologists, physiologists, biochemists, geneticists, epidemiologists, taxonomists, and cereal plant pathologists.

This book was released on 2010-07-05 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetics and Improvement of Barley Malt Quality presents up-to-date developments in barley production and breeding. The book is divided into nine chapters, including barley production and consumption, germplasm and utilization, chemical composition, protein and protein components, carbohydrates and sugars, starch degrading enzymes, endosperm cell walls and malting quality, genomics and malting quality improvement, and marker-assisted selection for malting quality. The information will be especially useful to barley breeders, malsters, brewers, biochemists, barley quality specialists, molecular geneticists, and biotechnologists. This book may also serve as reference text for post-graduate students and barley researchers. The authors for each chapter are the experts and frontier researchers in the specific areas. Professor Guoping Zhang is a barley breeder and crop physiologist in Department of Agronomy, Zhejiang University of China. Dr. Chengdao Li is a senior molecular geneticist and barley breeder in Department of Agriculture & Food, Western Australia. He is also an adjunct professor in Murdoch University of Australia and Zhejiang University of China.

Book Synopsis Wild Germplasm for Genetic Improvement in Crop Plants by : Muhammad Tehseen Azhar
Download or read book Wild Germplasm for Genetic Improvement in Crop Plants written by Muhammad Tehseen Azhar and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2021-03-10 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wild Germplasm for Genetic Improvement in Crop Plants addresses the need for an integrated reference on a wide variety of crop plants, facilitating comparison and contrast, as well as providing relevant relationships for future research and development. The book presents the genetic and natural history value of wild relatives, covers what wild relatives exist, explores the existing knowledge regarding specific relatives and the research surrounding them and identifies knowledge gaps. As understanding the role of crop wild relatives in plant breeding expands the genetic pool for abiotic and biotic stress resistance, this is an ideal reference on this important topic. Provides a single-volume resource to important crops for accessible comparison and research Explores both conventional and molecular approaches to breeding for targeted traits and allows for expanded genetic variability Guides the development of hybrids for germplasm with increased tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses
