It was org- ized by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Communication and Control (INSTICC), co-sponsored by the Workflow Management Coalition (WfMC), in cooperation with the Interdisciplinary Institute for Collaboration and Research on Enterprise Systems and Technology (IICREST). The purpose of ICSOFT 2007 was to bring together researchers and practitioners int- ested in information technology and software development. The conference tracks were “Software Engineering,” “Information Systems and Data Management,” “Programming Languages,” “Distributed and Parallel Systems” and “Knowledge Engineering.” Being crucial for the development of information systems, software and data te- nologies encompass a large number of research topics and applications: from imp- mentation-related issues to more abstract theoretical aspects of software engineering; from databases and data warehouses to management information systems and kno- edge-base systems; next to that, distributed systems, pervasive computing, data quality and other related topics are included in the scope of this conference.

Ontology-based and knowledge-based approaches to system development, UML based IS development methodologies, XML databases and heterogeneous information models have come to the fore. All these fundamental aspects are discussed in this book. This publication contains a collection of 22 high quality papers written by 44 authors. These articles present original results in modern database technologies, database applications, data warehousing, data mining, ontologies, and modern information systems. Special emphasis is put on multimedia database systems, heterogeneous data integration methods, view optimizations, ontology engineering tools, modeling and model transformations (MDA). Theoretical aspects as well as technical development issues are considered. The intended audience for this book is researchers, advanced students and practitioners who are interested in advanced topics on databases and information systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: th DEXA 2001, the 12 International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications was held on September 3–5, 2001, at the Technical University of Munich, Germany. The rapidly growing spectrum of database applications has led to the establishment of more specialized discussion platforms (DaWaK conference, EC Web conference, and DEXA workshop), which were all held in parallel with the DEXA conference in Munich. In your hands are the results of much effort, beginning with the preparation of the submitted papers. The papers then passed through the reviewing process, and the accepted papers were revised to final versions by their authors and arranged with the conference program. All this culminated in the conference itself. A total of 175 papers were submitted to this conference, and I would like to thank all the authors. They are the real base of the conference. The program committee and the supporting reviewers produced altogether 497 referee reports, on average of 2.84 reports per paper, and selected 93 papers for presentation. Comparing the weight or more precisely the number of papers devoted to particular topics at several recent DEXA conferences, an increase can be recognized in the areas of XMS databases, active databases, and multi and hypermedia efforts. The space devoted to the more classical topics such as information retrieval, distribution and Web aspects, and transaction, indexing and query aspects has remained more or less unchanged. Some decrease is visible for object orientation.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on innovative strategies to manage and build software systems for generating new knowledge from large archaeological data sets The book also reports on two case studies carried out in real-world scenarios within the Cultural Heritage setting. The book presents an original conceptual framework for developing software solutions to assist the knowledge generation process in connection with large archaeological data sets and related cultural heritage information— a context in which the inputs are mainly textual sources written in freestyle, i.e. without a predetermined, standard structure. Following an in-depth exploration of recent works on the knowledge generation process in the above-mentioned context and IT-based options for facilitating it, the book proposes specific new techniques capable of capturing the structure and semantics implicit in such textual sources, and argues for using this information in the knowledge generation process. The main result is the development of a conceptual framework that can accommodate textual sources and integrate the information included in them into a software engineering framework. The said framework is meant to assist cultural heritage professionals in general, and archaeologists in particular, in both knowledge extraction and the subsequent decision-making process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metadata and semantic research is a growing complex ecosystem of conceptual, theoretical, methodological, and technological frameworks, offering innovative computational solutions in the design and development of computer-based systems. Within this perspective, researchers working in the area need to further develop and integrate a broad range of methods, results, and solutions coming from different areas. MTSR has been designed as a forum allowing researchers to present and discuss specialized results as general contributions to the field. This volume collects the papers selected for presentation at the 4th International Conference on Metadata and Semantic Research (MTSR 2010), held in Alcala de Henares––a world heritage city and birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes––at the University of Alcala (October 20–22, 2010). The first MTSR conference was held online in 2005, followed by two more editions: in Corfu (2007) and in Milan (2009). The experience acquired during the past five years, and the warm welcome of MTSR by the research community, encouraged us to organize this new edition of the series, and turn it into a yearly event. According to the number and quality of the contributions submitted for revision, our 2010 effort was again a considerable success.

Book excerpt: The conference on Object Oriented Information Systems (OOIS) is now an es- blished international conference where innovative ideas, research, applications, and experiences in the design, development, and use of object oriented infor- tionsystems, fromboththeacademicandindustrialenvironments, arepresented. The ninth OOIS conference was held at the University of Geneva, September 2–5, 2003. The main theme was the Evolution of Object Oriented Information Systems. The papers presented ideas and issues related to the evolution, ad- tability, restructuring, and ?exibility of OOIS. In the context of the conference, ?ve workshops and four tutorials were organized providing a discussion forum for new ideas and including in depth presentations on important “hot” subjects. The three invited speakers of the ninth OOIS conference provided an - ternative view on OOIS and their evolution. Prof. John Mylopoulos (Univ- sity of Toronto and VLDB president) gave the opening presentation entitled “Agent Oriented IS Development” , Dr. Richard Soley (OMG President and CEO) gave the closing presentation entitled “Model Driven Architecture: The Evolution of Object-Oriented Systems?” and Prof. Lina Al-Jadir (American U- versity of Beirut) gave the theme presentation entitled “Once Upon a Time a DTD Evolved into Another DTD...”.

Book excerpt: This book presents TraceME, a traceability-based method for conceptual model evolution whose general purpose is to support the evolution of information systems. By providing a set of four TraceME chunks, TraceME is situational-oriented. In this way, it can be adapted to support different evolution projects by just assembling the TraceME chunks. To facilitate its industrial adoption, open source tools were developed and described which support the implementation of the TraceME chunks. The work presented highlights various research endeavors for the development of methods and techniques to automate the evolution of software systems. It explores the requirements engineering field as a steppingstone to a successful software development processes. In 2017, the underlying PhD dissertation won the “CAiSE PhD award”, granted to outstanding PhD theses in the field of Information Systems Engineering.

This book was released on 2005-03-30 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metadata play a fundamental role in both DLs and SDIs. Commonly defined as "structured data about data" or "data which describe attributes of a resource" or, more simply, "information about data", it is an essential requirement for locating and evaluating available data. Therefore, this book focuses on the study of different metadata aspects, which contribute to a more efficient use of DLs and SDIs. The three main issues addressed are: the management of nested collections of resources, the interoperability between metadata schemas, and the integration of information retrieval techniques to the discovery services of geographic data catalogs (contributing in this way to avoid metadata content heterogeneity).
