Conventional approaches underlying current building design practices fall short of covering the relevant environmental and social implications derived from inappropriate design, construction, and planning. The development of adequate sustainable design strategies is therefore becoming extremely relevant regarding the achievement of the United Nations 2030 Agenda Goals for Sustainable Development. This book comprises 11 chapters that highlight the actual research trends in the construction sector, aiming to increase the knowledge on sustainable design practices by highlighting the actual practices that explore efficient ways to reduce the environmental consequences related to the construction industry, while promoting social wellbeing and economic development. Severe environmental degradation is endemic to the region, the existing environmental infrastructure is often inadequate, significant new investment is perhaps decades away, and there is little knowledge of advanced techniques for impact assessment, project evaluation, and project financing. The first two papers of Environmental Infrastructure Management survey available cost-effective technology for solid waste treatment and air pollution control, providing guidance for possible incremental additions to existing infrastructure. There is also a discussion of transferable pollution credits as an instrument in regulating air quality. The discussion of economic incentives also embraces user fees and other pollution control instruments. A range of methods is presented for the evaluation and comparison of alternative projects where data are poor or scarce. Canadian experience with specific capital budgeting techniques is given comprehensive attention. Debt financing strategies are addressed in the context of present-day Ukraine. Finally, an outline is given of a general framework for making decisions about environmental projects, including the use of environmental impact assessments.

The process leads to the selection of the projects on the principle of sustainable development, so that the adverse effects of the new developments are mitigated through proactive and rational decisions making. Over the years, EIA has not been practiced holistically in the developing countries and particularly in South Asian Nations. However in the last few years Governments, environmentalists, researchers, media and communities of these countries have formulated sufficient legislative and institutional frame work for the EIA. In this paper, an overview of the EIA practices in developing countries and particularly South Asia, have been given, with special reference to the developments in Pakistan. The creation of awareness and formulating legislation has thus forced the countries to abandon many developmental projects, which were detrimental to the environment. Some of the basic flaws in the EIA of a mega project (Zero Point Interchange Project- ZPIP) have been highlighted.
