Book excerpt: This book is about general infrared (IR) engineering, technology, practices, and principles as they apply to modem imaging systems. An alternative title to this book with appeal to managers and marketing personnel might be "Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Infrared Sensors, but Couldn't Get Answers on from Engineers." This book is not meant to be a comprehensive compendium of IR (like the Infrared and Electro Optical Systems Handbook). Rather, it is intend ed to complement such texts by providing up to date information and pragmatic knowledge that is difficult to locate outside of periodicals. The information contained in this book is critical in the day-to-day life of en gineering practitioners, proposal writers, and those on the periphery of an IR pro gram. It serves as a guide for engineers wishing to "catch up," engineers new to the field, managers, students, administrators, and technicians. It is also useful for seasoned IR engineers who want to review recent technological developments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Society on Oxygen Transport to Tissue (IS OTT) was founded in 1973 as a scientific society providing a forum for bioengineers, basic scientists (physiologists, biochemists and physicists) and clinicians (including anesthesiologists, intensive care specialists, pediatricians, neonatologists, internists, surgeons and other specialists) to facilitate the exchange of scientific information among those interested in any aspect of the transport and/or utilization of oxygen in tissues. From the ranks of its members, many fundamental discoveries and inventions have been made involving the many aspects of oxygen transport and utilization by biological tissues. The ISOTT proceed ings, now in its 14th edition, has become a standard work in the field as witnessed by the inclusion in the Science Citation Index of all volumes published so far. The 19th ISOTT Meeting was held in Cura~ao from August 24th through August 30th, 1991. The Cura~ao Meeting attracted 145 registrants and 45 accompanying persons. The format originated by Dr. Ian Llngmuir in 1985, consisting of posters ac companied by an abbreviated oral summary, was again successfully handled with slight modifications. The meeting was introduced by 6 review lectures covering the whole field of oxygen transport from bioengineering, the problem of diffusion in lung, blood and tissue through pathology of oxygen uptake in the lung, oxygen supply dependency of the critically ill to artificial oxygen carriers. A special session dealt with oxygen sup ply under ambiant pressure changes.

Book excerpt: With national trade barriers falling, causing the expansion of the com petitive global market, the question of quality control has become an essential issue for the 1990s. The time where the promise was to replace a product if it does not work seems to have passed; what is more impor tant now is not so much a reduction in what is going wrong but an increase of what is going right the first time (Feigenbaum 1990). This new trend is sometimes referred to as total quality. Among the many advantages ofthis zero-defect manufacturing policy, we can enumerate (Laurin 1990): superior marketability of wholly de pendable products, enormous gain in productivity, elimination of waste ful cost in replacing poor quality work and retrofitting rejected products from the field. Although total quality is a relatively new and attractive concept for mass products such as cars, consumer electronics and per sonal computers, in many fields, mainly aerospace and military, it has been the rule for years because of security reasons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welding is a complex process, is increasingly automated, and operates at higher speeds in more difficult environments. Defects also need to be detected as they arise to ensure efficient, high-quality production. All these needs have led to a growing interest in the use of sensors to provide accurate, robust, real-time monitoring where this cannot be achieved by more traditional testing and inspection techniques. This important book reviews the range of monitoring techniques available and their applications. After an introductory chapter, the first part of the book reviews the range of sensor technologies in welding, from arc and optical sensors to infrared and ultrasonic techniques. Part two discusses the monitoring of particular aspects of welding such as weld seams and profiles, the analysis of weld penetration and weld pool surface, as well as monitoring of resistance and laser welding. With its distinguished editor and international team of contributors, Real-time weld process monitoring is a valuable reference to all those concerned with improving the quality of welding and welded components. - Reviews the range of monitoring techniques available - Examines the range of sensor technologies in welding from arc and optical sensors to infrared and ultrasonic techniques - Discusses the monitoring of specific aspects of welding such as weld seams, resistance and laser welding
