It is merely a step, however, in a very fast-changing field, toward achieving an understanding of novel structures that can be used for high-performance infrared detectors, imaging arrays, infrared lasers and sources. Internationally-known experts discuss recent advances in materials structures, processing and device performances, with presentations crossing materials and discipline boundaries. Recent investigations based on III-V, II-VI and IV bulk semiconductors, quantum wells, and superlattices for long-wavelength infrared detectors, emitters, sources and materials are featured. Topics include: antimonide-related materials and devices; quantum wells and devices; quantum infrared detectors; HgCdTe - materials, devices and processing; nonlinear and parametric oscillator material; interdiffusion in heterostructures and related topics.

Book excerpt: The International Workshop on "Intersubband Transitions in Quantum Wells:: Physics and Applications," was held at National Cheng Kung University, in Tainan, Taiwan, December 15-18, 1997. The objective of the Workshop is to facilitate the presentation and discussion of the recent results in theoretical, experimental, and applied aspects of intersubband transitions in quantum wells and dots. The program followed the tradition initiated at the 1991 conference in Cargese-France, the 1993 conference in Whistler, B. C. Canada, and the 1995 conference in Kibbutz Ginosar, Israel. Intersubband transitions in quantum wells and quantum dots have attracted considerable attention in recent years, mainly due to the promise of various applications in the mid- and far-infrared regions (2-30 J. lm). Over 40 invited and contributed papers were presented in this four-day workshop, with topics covered most aspects of the intersubband transition phenomena including: the basic intersubband transition processes, multiquantum well infrared photodetector (QWIP) physics, large format (640x480) GaAs QWIP (with 9. 0 J. lffi cutoff) focal plane arrays (FPAs) for IR imaging camera applications, infrared modulation, intersubband emission including mid- and long- wavelength quantum cascade (QC) lasers such as short (A. "" 3. 4 J. lm) and long (A. "" 11. 5 J. lm) wavelength room temperature QC lasers, quantum fountain intersubband laser at 15. 5 J. lm wavelength in GaAs/AIGaAs quantum well, harmonic generation and nonlinear effects, ultra-fast phenomena such as terahertz (THz) intersubband emission and detection. The book divides into five Chapters.

This book was released on 1997-09-30 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of semiconductor wafer processing is rapidly changing. Pure device performance is no longer sufficient to ensure a technology's success as IC chips approach 1GB. Yield, reliability, cost and manufacturability are principal drivers of the industry. Great strides have been made in understanding the science and impact of front-end (pre-metal) chemical surface preparations and are beginning to influence the 'real' technology and its evolution. Efforts in understanding particle and metals removal, along with Si surface etching and microroughness are prime examples of areas where work is beginning to pay off together with processes related to the back-end (post-metal). The focus of this book is to report new findings and to discuss surface preparation with an emphasis on gaining a mechanistic understanding of the underlying science upon which the technology is based. Topics include: megasonic cleaning; SC1 technology; surface preparation and gate oxide reliability; CMP/CMP cleaning; post-etch processing; surface microroughness; wet chemical cleaning and gate oxide integrity; analytical studies of surfaces; wet chemical cleaning/etching; dry wafer cleaning; and environmentally friendly processing.

Book excerpt: Three-volumes book “Handbook of II-VI Semiconductor-Based Sensors and Radiation Detectors” is the first to cover both chemical sensors and biosensors and all types of photodetectors and radiation detectors based on II-VI semiconductors. It contains a comprehensive and detailed analysis of all aspects of the application of II-VI semiconductors in these devices. The first volume "Materials and Technologies" of a three-volume set describes the physical, chemical and electronic properties of II-VI compounds, which give rise to an increased interest in these semiconductors. Technologies that are used in the development of various devices based on II-VI connections, such as material synthesis, deposition, characterization, processing, and device fabrication, are also discussed in detail in this volume. It covers also topics related to synthesis and application of II-VI-based nanoparticles and quantum dots, as well their toxicity, biocompatibility and biofunctionalization.

One highlight of the volume is the opening talk by Rustum Roy, who was instrumental in establishing the first symposium on this topic in 1978. Professor Roy summarizes his views of the past 19 years of progress in the field. A second highlight is the participation by several Russian and Ukrainian scientists who authored papers on nuclear waste disposal aspects of the Chernobyl Unit 4 reactor that exploded in April 1986. Additional topics include: glass formulations and properties; glass/water interactions; cements in radioactive waste management; ceramic and crystalline waste forms; spent nuclear fuel; waste processing and treatment; radiation effects in ceramics, glasses and nuclear waste materials; waste package materials; radionuclide solubility and speciation; radionuclide sorption; radionuclide transport; repository backfill; performance assessment; natural analogues and excess plutonium dispositioning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inexorable drive for increased integrated circuit functionality and performance places growing demands on the metal and dielectric thin films used in fabricating these circuits, as well as spurring demand for new materials applications and processes. This book directly addresses issues of widespread concern in the microelectronics industry - smaller feature sizes, new materials and new applications that challenge the reliability of new technologies. While the book continues the focus on issues related to interconnect reliability, such as electromigration and stress, particular emphasis is placed on the effects of microstructure. An underlying theme is understanding the importance of interactions among different materials and associated interfaces comprising a single structure with dimensions near or below the micrometer scale. Topics include: adhesion and fracture; gate oxide growth and oxide interfaces; surface preparation and gate oxide reliability; oxide degradation and defects; micro-structure, texture and reliability; novel measurement techniques; interconnect performance and reliability modeling; electromigration and interconnect reliability and stress and stress relaxation.
