Book excerpt: A variety of semiconductor materials have been used to fabricate diode lasers for the mid-infrared. Lasers using the lead salts (e.g., PbSnTe) have been commercially available for sometime. Mid-infrared emitting III-V semiconductors (e.g., InGaAsSb) have superior thermal conductivity, and diode lasers fabricated from these material offer higher powers, of particular interest are the III-V semiconductor laser based on type-II superlattices (e.g., InAs/GaInSb). Among the many unique properties attributed to type-II superlattices are small hole mass, reduced Auger recombination, and less inter-valence band absorption-all important for better lasers. Recent results with Quantum Cascade-type lasers are also very encouraging. This paper summarizes the important semiconductor materials for mid-infrared lasers with emphasis on the type-II superlattices.

It is merely a step, however, in a very fast-changing field, toward achieving an understanding of novel structures that can be used for high-performance infrared detectors, imaging arrays, infrared lasers and sources. Internationally-known experts discuss recent advances in materials structures, processing and device performances, with presentations crossing materials and discipline boundaries. Recent investigations based on III-V, II-VI and IV bulk semiconductors, quantum wells, and superlattices for long-wavelength infrared detectors, emitters, sources and materials are featured. Topics include: antimonide-related materials and devices; quantum wells and devices; quantum infrared detectors; HgCdTe - materials, devices and processing; nonlinear and parametric oscillator material; interdiffusion in heterostructures and related topics.

They could also be used for free-space optical communications, thermal imaging applications and the development of "homeland security" measures. Mid-infrared Semiconductor Optoelectronics is an overview of the current status and technological development in this rapidly emerging area; the basic physics, some of the problems facing the design engineer and a comparison of possible solutions are laid out; the different lasers used as sources for mid-infrared technology are considered; recent work in detectors is reviewed; the last part of the book is concerned with applications. With a world-wide authorship of experts working in many mid-infrared-related fields this book will be an invaluable reference for researchers and graduate students drawn from physics, electronic and electrical engineering and materials science.

Book excerpt: II-VI Semiconductor Materials and Their Applications deals with II-VI compound semiconductors and the status of the two areas of current optoelectronics applications: blue-green emitters and IR detectors. Specifically, the growth, charactrtization, materials and device issues for these two applications are described. Emphasis is placed on the wide bandgap emitters where much progress has occurred recently. The book also presents new directions that have potential, future applications in optoelectronics for II-VI materials. In particular, it discusses the status of dilute magnetic semiconductors for mango-optical and electromagnetic devices, nonlinear optical properties, photorefractive effects and new materials and physics phenomena, such as self-organized, low-dimensional structures.II_VI Semiconductor Materials and Their Applications is a valuable reference book for researchers in the field as well as a textbook for materials science and applied physics courses.

Book excerpt: This volume presents state-of-the-art information on several important material systems and device structures employed in modern semiconductor lasers. The first two chapters discuss several III-V, II-VI, and VI-VI compound semiconductor material systems employed in diode lasers whose emission spectra cover the range from the blue to the mid-infrared. Subsequent chapters describe the elaboration of special laser structures designed for achieving narrow spectral linewidths and wavelength tunability, as well as high power emission devices. The last chapter covers the development of surface emitting diode lasers, particularly vertical cavity structures. In all five chapters, the underlying device physics as well as the state-of-the-art and future trends are discussed. This book introduces the non-expert to the design and fabrication issues involved in the development of these important laser devices. In addition, it reviews the current status of the different material systems and cavity configurations for the benefit of readers engaged in research in this field. Useful background material related to the fundamentals of lasing in semiconductors can be found in the companion volume, Semiconductor Lasers I: Fundamentals. - Covers important recent advances in materials, design, fabrication, and device structure of semiconductor lasers - aspects not covered in previously existing literature - Introduces the non-expert to the subject - Useful for professionals engaged in research and development - Numerous schematic and data-containing illustrations - Written by leading experts in the field

Book excerpt: Three-volumes book “Handbook of II-VI Semiconductor-Based Sensors and Radiation Detectors” is the first to cover both chemical sensors and biosensors and all types of photodetectors and radiation detectors based on II-VI semiconductors. It contains a comprehensive and detailed analysis of all aspects of the application of II-VI semiconductors in these devices. The second volume “Photodetectors” of a three-volume set, focus on the consideration of all types of optical detectors, including IR detectors, visible and UV photodetectors. This consideration includes both the fundamentals of the operation of detectors and the peculiarities of their manufacture and use. In particular, describes numerous strategies for their fabrication and characterization. An analysis of new trends in development of II-VI semiconductors-based photodetectors such as graphene/HgCdTe-, nanowire- and quantum dot-based photodetectors, as well as solution-processed, multicolor, flexible and self-powered photodetectors, are also given.

Book excerpt: Long-wavelength Infrared Semiconductor Lasers provides a comprehensive review of the current status of semiconductor coherent sources emitting in the mid-to far-infrared spectrum and their applications. It includes three topics not covered in any previous book: far-infrared emission from photo-mixers as well as from hot-hole lasers, and InP-based lasers emitting beyond two micrometers. Semiconductor lasers emitting at more than two micrometers have many applications such as in trace gas analysis, environmental monitoring, and industrial process control. Because of very rapid progress in recent years, until this book no comprehensive information beyond scattered journal articles is available at present.

Book excerpt: In this dissertation, we investigated ZnSe-based materials, which are interesting for a variety of potential applications in various devices. There was only limited information available in the literature about Zn1-xMnxSe material parameters like the electron effective mass and transport properties. In this work, we explored many new details about this interesting material using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and some other experimental techniques. The fundamental aspects related to lattice vibrations in mixed crystal alloys and reststrahlen band were also studied. In summary the following results have been obtained in this thesis: (A) Results from the series of chlorine-doped Zn1-xMnxSe samples: To extract information about the electron effective mass we performed roomtemperature plasma edge measurements on chlorine-doped n-type Zn1-xMnxSe epilayers. Via Drude-Lorentz-type multi-oscillator fits to our data, we extracted the optical electron effective mass (m*) in chlorine doped Zn1-xMnxSe:Cl samples for different Mn contents and free-electron concentrations. The free-electron concentration was determined using room-temperature van-der-Pauw Hall effect measurements. Our results indicate that: (A1) The electron effective mass in Zn1-xMnxSe is lower than that for ZnSe. A distinct reduction of the electron effective mass is observed upon Mn incorporation.
