Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital Ultraviolet and Infrared Photography discusses the growing number of applications of ultraviolet and infrared photography. Scientific and technical photographers, such as those engaged in scientific, medical, forensic, and landscape and wildlife photography routinely use ultraviolet and infrared techniques, and these techniques are growing in use in creative photography. This is the first book to address the application and potential for both ultraviolet and infrared photography in both science and art. The author, Adrian Davies, discusses the how-to of ultraviolet and infrared digital recording with a dissection of techniques, camera requirements and camera conversion, a useful appendix of resources and equipment currently available and inspirational image examples throughout. Digital Ultraviolet and Infrared Photography is an essential read for photographers using these tools either professionally or creatively.

Professor Finneran outlines the complex problems facing an editor of Yeats's poetry and explains the solutions adopted in the new text. Manuscript materials are drawn on extensively, including some which have recently come to light in the Scribner Archives at the University of Texas and at Princeton University. Compared with the first edition of this volume (Editing Yeats's Poems, 1983), there is an additional chapter - on the order of the poems - as well as new information on the Scribner Edition and other revisions throughout.

Book excerpt: Transmitted Infrared photography (IRT) is a well-established technical photography method that makes pigments more transparent than the standard Infrared photography. This note illustrates this method showing results from Pigments Checker to evaluate, for each pigment, how this approach is better than the standard infrared photo. Eventually, we present the imaging done on a manuscript with a later added drawing that conceals part of the writing. Technical Photography is usually performed in the reflection mode: the lamps (UV, VIS, and IR) are facing the object sitting on the same side of the camera. On the other hand, in the transmission mode, the object stands between the camera and the lamps. This approach can be implemented for all the 3 spectral ranges, UV, VIS, and, IR and we indicate these images by adding a T to the reflection mode acronyms. So, we have VIST, UVT, and IRT. Up to now, the most successful and studied of these transmission modes is IRT, Transmitted Infrared photography. IRT is part of the Technical Photography documentation and allows the detection of underdrawing and pentimenti [1, 2]. It is a very effective imaging method since pigments become even more transparent than in the usual IR photography method. This approach is useful only for objects with translucent supports, such as paintings on canvas, and works on paper and historical documents. The IR lamp should face the back of the object while the camera looks at the front. The lamp should be shielded so that only the radiation through the support can reach the camera. Any other IR source in the room should be turned off to avoid diffused infrared bouncing on the object. In some cases, could be worth testing the method by changing the configuration and having the camera facing the back of the object. In general, the first setup is preferred because the drawing lines will appear sharper since the infrared is not diffused by the canvas.

Book excerpt: Alternate Light Source Imaging provides a brief guide to digital imaging using reflected infrared and ultraviolet radiation for crime scene photographers. Clear and concise instruction illustrates how to accomplish good photographs in a variety of forensic situations. It demonstrates how tunable wavelength light sources and digital imaging techniques can be used to successfully locate and document physical evidence at the crime scene, in the morgue, or in the laboratory. The scientific principles that make this type of photography possible are described, followed by the basic steps that can be utilized to capture high quality evidentiary photographs.

These objects are conventionally called ostraca, and thousands of them have been and continue to be discovered. This volume highlights some of the methodologies that have been developed for analyzing the archaeological contexts, material aspects, and textual peculiarities of ostraca.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conservation research in libraries is a rapidly growing field. This book places analysis within its context in conservation and provides examples of how this expensive resource can be used. Through a series of case studies, it describes major analytical procedures, including visualization, molecular, elemental and separation techniques as well as chemical tests. It is thus a suitable reference work for library conservators and curators. Please note: Despite careful production of our books, sometimes mistakes happen. Unfortunately, the authorship for some chapters wasn’t correct in the original publication. Chapter 5 was written by Andrew Beeby and David Howell as co-author, chapter 6 by Kelly Domoney and David Howell as co-author, and chapter 9 is authored by Anita Quye. This will be corrected. We apologize for the mistake.
