Book excerpt: Excerpt from Information for Fruit-Growers This is more especially applicable to early and delicate fruits, which require to be handled as little as possible and placed on the market in as short a time as possible after picking. Therefore, if a person is seeking a site for a general orchard, it is of prime importance that locality should be a first consideration. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fruit-Growers Guide-Book This little book has been prepared as a means of assisting many persons who have answered the call "back to the land," and who are undertaking the growing of fruit on a commercial scale. It is not intended as an exhaustive treatise on fruit growing, as such is manifestly impossible within the size of such a book. Neither is it expected to tell all that is to be told about fruit growing. Its purpose is to serve for the guidance of the beginner and as a handy reference manual for the busy orchardist. The foundation upon which this little book is based is the many letters which reach the office of The Fruit-Grower, containing inquiries about many phases of fruit-growing. These inquiries come from all parts of the United States and from Canada, and cover almost every phase of horticultural work, although in preparing this book only the general problem of growing the ordinary deciduous orchard fruits has been considered. This problem has been considered in a very general way without specific directions for any particular fruit. Where details for a given fruit have been needed, the treatment of the subject has been boiled down to as concise a form as possible. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Fruit Grower Michigan, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts, in all of which sections I have either resided or Spent much time with fruit growers. Since my travels in sub-tropical regions have been limited I have been obliged to draw on the experience and Opinions of other fruit growers for judgments and descriptions of such fruits and fruit varieties. Doubtless the majority of my readers, having small areas at their disposal, need suggestions as to the maximum utilization of available space. They should, therefore, be pleased with the chapters on Laying Out the Plantation, upon Combining Beauty with Comfort and Utility, and updm Dwarf Fruits, also with the ample directions for growing the various Bush Fruits. I can scarcely urge too strongly that each reader plant at least some of the unusual fruits and fruit-bearing ornamentals, for the novelty and variety of the thing. In this connection special attention may be directed to the few paragraphs on origination of new varieties (see Contents), because at least some of these fruits should prove highly interesting as subjects with which to experiment. Plant breeding, however, is in itself a subject for a far larger volume than this one and can only be mentioned as the most interesting and absorb ing field of all horticultural effort. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Complete Fruit Growers Guide Catalogue, 1899 Good soil tillage at the proper time, sufficient fertilizer of the right sort, proper preparation of the soil before planting, are essentials to the best te sults in growing trees. This properly applies to both nursery or orchard. We have a peculiar way of preparing soil before planting it to trees. Some thing original, and a little expensive, perhaps. We begin with turning under three or four good, heavy crops of clover or peas, then we proceed to apply a good dressing of rich stable manure, and finally subsoil the ground eighteen or more inches deep. Results: Strong, thrifty, smooth and straight bodies, large bunches of fibrous roots of strong growing and fruit ing power. The picture shows our men in the act of subsoiling a field con taining over 100 acres, for nursery stock, to be planted in the spring. The soil, a rich, heavy, black loam, is eminently adapted for growing trees. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. My excuse for presenting at this time this little volume, is the want, on the part of beginners in the business of fruit culture, and of the common farmer who has not the time nor inclination to study extensive works upon the subject, of a hook that shall he sold at a small price yet cover the entire field of fruit cultivation, in all its details, in a plain and practical manner. The limits of the present work, however, will not allow of an extended discussion as to the merits of the many methods of growth and cultivation, and I have aimed to give only such as are largely practiced by the most successful fruit growers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Everything for the Fruit-Grower: Price-List, Fall 1900 This is not only a pleasant occupation, but if intelligently and persistently followed, is also a sure road to wealth. If the average farmer would devote from 10 to 20 acres to Nut culture, giving proper attention to it, he would achieve independence in a few years, escaping the ordi nary labor of the farm. We have accounts of single trees paying from $25 to $50, and many cases are noted where an acre clears from $150 to $600 annually. Thies, Extension Horticulturist) Since 1936, this periodical has been issued by the Extension Service as a means of informing Massachusetts fruit growers on matter of current interest. Both tree fruits and small fruits have been included. The first mimeographed issue in March, 1936 was preceded by carbon copies of similar material mailed from time to time to the County Extension offices. (two of these releases, July and August 1935, are here included). It has been our purpose through the years to cover a wide variety of items and to have the write-ups relatively brief. Considerable attention has been given to abstracting Experiment Station reports and to the presentation of timely information. A casual survey of this material, month by month, will provide the reader with a running account of the various problems confronting the fruit grower in years past and the suggested solutions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Second Congress of Fruit Growers: Convened Under the Auspices of the American Institute, in the City of New-York, 1849 The president then said he was happy to meet, this morning, so many delegates in attendance, with whom he had the pleasure of shaking hands last year, and he was very happy also to meet the new delegates - gentlemen who had come up from various quarters, some of them from the far West, to aid in the deliberations of the Congress, and assist, by their knowledge and experience, in the effort to promote the spread of Pomological Science in the country. The field was a wide one, and no doubt it would be well filled. But he would not take'up any more of the time of the Congress by remarks of his own, since it was already past the hour when it should have assembled, and it was important to proceed to business.
