Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Written and Oral Composition The authors add a volume to the many texts on English composition, in the hope of meeting fairly the first great need of the high school student who is beginning to learn to compose. That need is to think in terms of good com position, - to regard the spoken or written theme as a whole, and not as a collection of separate sentences. The high school student is not yet mature, but still less is he a child, and he learns to write well and to speak well mainly by learning to think. This book seeks constantly to appeal to his intelligence; first, by giving him subjects within his grasp, and second, by having faith that his grasp means brains as well as memory. An old mistake was to give the student tasks beyond his power; a new mistake is to hold him too closely to the commonplace. The present authors try a middle course, but they have never felt themselves obliged to reach that middle course by exactly bisecting the difference between the two ex tremes. Much more stress than usual is laid upon oral composition, for the plain reason that much defective writing is due to defective speaking. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Composition: Oral and Written This book is an adaptation of my Writing and Speaking to more rapid use by more advanced students. Both the order and the proportions have been changed; parts have been re-cast; many of the exercises have been modified or made over; and the whole has been reduced in size by about a third. Otherwise the two books are substantially the same. The chapters on description and narration and other parts most closely related to the study of literature have been changed least, since the adaptation demanded in these cases is rather of themes than of text. I hope the book in this form will serve those colleges who wish more detailed review of elementary applications, and less detailed study of style, than are found in my College Manual of Rhetoric. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oral Exercises in English Composition That English composition in its earliest stages can be better taught by oral than by written exercises is an impression that for some time past has been gaining ground in educational circles. It is hoped, therefore, that an elementary text-book, prepared as this has been on an oral basis, will not be deemed superfluous. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Composition and Rhetoric for Schools Certain beliefs that the authors of Composition and Rhetoric for Schools hold in reference to the teaching of English composition have influenced them in preparing the present text-book. 1. In the earliest years, the critical side of teaching should be subordinated to the constructive, stimulative side; the pupil should be encouraged to write freely and even unconsciously at first, to form habits of thought and of invention before his expression is minutely criticised and pruned. For this reason a preliminary course (Part I) of constructive work has been provided. To these chapters nothing has been admitted of a negative or minutely critical nature. The processes of work that a conscientious writer follows are described, as closely as possible in the natural order in which these processes occur in a writers experience. 2. Much, if not all, of the usual freshman course of rhetoric in colleges can properly be included in the secondary course in English without requiring more time than is already devoted to the subject. In view of the fact that only a small percentage of the students of secondary schools enter college, it seems desirable to present to the high-school pupil all the elementary facts of style, such as usage, clearness in sentences, paragraphing, etc. Many of the best text-books designed for schools, however, are purposely incomplete in treatment; they take for granted that the student will pursue a further course of instruction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical English Composition It is the purpose of this book to accomplish four things for the student: (1) to give him continually increasing power in original composition; (2) to train him in habits of accuracy in mechanical form (spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, etc.); (3) to develop his interest in good literature; and (4) to stimulate his interest in the affairs of the world in which he lives. From the beginning of the book to the end, students are required to do creative work and are trained to select, arrange, and express ideas so as to make the best use of what they know. The method of teaching is inductive. Models are used in such a way as to encourage and to develop original thought and expression. No blind imitation of models is possible if the method of the book is followed. This requires persistent effort along definitely indicated lines. Beginning with very simple work, the exercises gradually increase in difficulty in both subject matter and technical requirement. The assignments for student practice are varied and very extensive, ranging from the practical to the theoretical, from matters of everyday experience to matters of imagination and fancy. The subjects assigned have been taken almost entirely from lists made out by students when asked to hand in subjects in which they were interested and on which they would like to write. Necessarily, these subjects touch all phases of the lives of young people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teacher's Manual for Language Lessons: Combining Oral Exercises and Written Composition In the revision of "First Lessons in Language and Composition" we have been prompted by the desire to make the work still more acceptable. Believing it unjust to compel the pupils to purchase, and unwise to put into their hands, the suggestions and models designed only for the teacher; and convinced that the first plan of our work demanded of the teacher too much labor in getting the matter before the child, we have rearranged the whole. We now present a separate book (Language Lessons) for the child, and this Manual, which includes the Language Lessons, as a handbook for the teacher, hoping to serve the interests of both. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Everyday English Composition The object of this book is to improve the speech and the writing of the pupils, to develop their ability to think clearly, and to give them standards of appreciation and criticism. Constant stress laid on habits of thinking and on organization of material tends to make the pupils resourceful and self-reliant. The subject matter is limited to essentials - common matters of everyday speaking and writing. To a large extent the presentation is inductive, and an effort has been made both to vitalize and to humanize the work. Part One emphasizes good form and the manipulation of sentences and simple paragraphs. Part Two applies these tools of language to the most common forms of composition, stressing not only sentences and paragraphs but also matters of construction that apply particularly to the form of composition under consideration. The following are the important features of the book: 1. The assignments are varied in character, including talks, letters, themes, exercises, criticisms, games, dramatizations, and long themes. They are largely selected from the pupils' world and from vocational and community interests, and are adapted to the ability of the pupils. 2. The illustrative matter includes selections from both old and modem classics, and from magazines and newspapers as well as from the work of pupils. These selections also are closely related to the interests of the pupils. 3. Oral composition receives as much attention as written composition. The exercises in organization of ideas, choice of words, manner of speaking, and personal poise furnish valuable training for the pupils. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced English Composition The teacher's main duty is to set work, to appraise it, and criticise it. The actual amount of oral teaching to be done is very small. The chief work is the correction of essays. 1. Setting the Essay. - (1) State the subject, or subjects. It is not necessary that all should write on the same subject. In the case of Technical essays it is impossible, for the number of reference books is small. There should be a fixed list of technical essay subjects. All should write on each subject; but not all in the same week. It is a good thing to draw up a programme. Copying is so easily detected here that it is not worth attempting. When the whole of a subject cannot be worked out in one period, plus its evening's preparation, two periods may be given. But it is better to divide up the subject into sections, e.g. 1st period, drawing up of notes; 2nd, writing first scene; 3rd, writing second scene (in the case of a story); first part, etc. (in the case of an essay). A single essay subject may take a fortnight for the boys to write. 2. Explaining the Treatment. - This should be very brief and very practical. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Composition in the High School, the First and Second Years Narration is perhaps the most natural form of discourse, and the one most suited to the interests 'and capacities of young people. It ought, therefore, to serve as an introduction to the course in composition in both the first and the second years. Oral narra tion dealing with material at hand, in literature lessons, or in every-day events, has already been mentioned. The transition from the spoken to the written theme is easily effected. Brief ly related incidents and anecdotes will furnish opportunity for dealing with some of the most vital principles of composition. There need be no lack of material, since it can be constantly supplied through the agencies of reading, observation, memory, and imagination. Almost any girl, looking out of a window at home, or any boy, loitering up the street on an errand, will note some incident that will furnish forth the body and sinews of a theme. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primary Lessons in Language and Composition The thought I have kept constantly in view while writing is best expressed in the following words from Dr. Bam Now the school master may allow the accumulation of sentence types to proceed silently with the reading lessons, or he may do something expressly to quicken the process of stamping them on the memory. I assume that the age of Grammar has not yet arrived; and hence the science of sentences is not entered upon That age is, nevertheless, drawing near; and there may, conceivably, be a preparation for it, not to say a certain amount of inde pendent tuition having the same fina' result, although not in the same complete form. As empirical knowledge should, indeed must, always precede scientific knowledge - as direct observation must go before the more complex operations of reasoning - as qualitative analysis must be the forerunner of quantitative analysis, so a knowledge of the proper use of language-forms - both words and sentences - should precede their scientific study. The only question is as to the amount of precision, of complexity, and of technicality to be given to the study. Of complexity and technicality, it has been my object to give it as little as possible; of precision, as much as possible. To train young children in the proper use of the words that belong to a child's vocabulary, and to give them facility in the use of such sen tence forms as they can readily imitate and employ, have been my chief objects. I have also introduced a series of exercises intended to supply, or to lead the child to supply, the matter to be clothed in language. These exercises consist of graded lessons on pictures and narratives, which serve the double purpose of reviewing the more technical language lessons and of training the mind in observation and reflection. To study words and sentences without cultivating the faculties that give substance to language is to lead the mind on a futile quest. What I have aimed at is the development of the power of thinking along with and through the development of the power of expression. The one is of little use without the other. Indeed, one can scarcely exist without the other. Thought claims expression; expression excites thought. As thought is logical, language will be clear; as thought is confused, language will be defective. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of English Composition Sir Philip Sidney says of the lawyer that "our wickedness maketh him necessary, and necessity maketh him honorable." Something of the kind, I suppose most teachers would agree, might be said of textbooks of composition. Whether or not necessity makes them honorable, our deficiencies make them necessary. The best teacher of composition I have known did not use a text-book; and if we could all teach like Dean Briggs, we might wisely make a bonfire of the books. As matters stand, however, they are generally regarded as a necessary evil. On another point, I believe, a majority of teachers would agree. Experience has shown, if it has shown anything, that the amount of rhetorical theory which most students can assimilate and put into practice is small. The average college freshman finds it extremely difficult to grasp even the simplest abstract idea; the most that we can reasonably hope is that he may be induced to lay firm hold upon a few basic principles. To multiply abstractions and distinctions is to confuse him hopelessly. If the study of rhetorical theory in the freshman course were an end in itself, we might still, for the sake of the best students, be justified in presenting it elaborately and in detail. But it is not an end in itself; it is admittedly ancillary to correct and clear writing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
