Knowledge results from the combination of grasping and transforming experience" (Kolb, 1984, p. 41). Teachers have planned and led field trips as a form of experiential pedagogy and an important role in student learning and development. Well-planned field trips in surrounding communities help broaden children0́9s concepts of the world around them. In spite of the research that supports the value of field trips, there appear to be fewer field trip opportunities in low socioeconomic schools. Data were collected from 12 teacher participants to gain a deeper understanding of their field trip planning and leading experiences. The purpose of this study was to add to the existing knowledge of institutional and individual pre-kindergarten-fifth grade teachers' practices in planning and leading field trips. The following research questions guide this study: 1. How do teachers describe their experiences with field trips for children in a low socioeconomic school? 2. How do teachers describe what happens when support for field trips is reduced? 3. How do teachers respond to these situations? Through in-depth qualitative analysis of teachers' lived experiences of planning and leading field trips, four themes emerged: teachers' actions, overall perceptions, challenges, and potential support. The findings along with their sub-findings were explored in relationship to three significant areas of informal learning as offered in the literature: experiential learning, education in low socioeconomic communities, and field trips. Four results of this study emerged and were offered with interpretations by the researcher: (a) field trips integrate and move theory and practice into the real world, (b) field trips afford teachers the rare opportunity to observe their students in society, (c) moving content knowledge into context enhances social and cognitive development, and (d) teachers' collaboration increases the opportunity to plan and lead effective field trips. This study concludes presenting collective perceptions of the participants and recommendations to public school teachers for best practices planning and leading field trips in low socioeconomic schools.

Book excerpt: With the pressures of budget cuts, many schools--particularly schools serving low-income students--are eliminating school field trips to museums, zoos, and other cultural institutions despite their widely reported utility. First, through a systematic review of the literature, I examine the findings from 17 international studies on the benefits of visiting an informal science education institution during a K-12 school field trip. Almost all pre-post studies reported a positive change in both cognitive and affective outcomes after visiting an ISEI. However, studies that also included a control group to compare students who visited the ISEI with students who had yet to visit the ISEI reported mixed findings, and only three of those studies used randomization in placing students into the control and treatment groups. Second, I use a random assignment experimental design to study the impacts of visiting a science center during a school field trip on student interest in studying science, interest in visiting science centers, and knowledge obtained from attending an educational program as part of the science center experience. Survey data from 1,830 third through eighth graders showed small positive results suggesting that science museums encourage students to become connoisseurs of science, and this effect was slightly greater for minority students, boys, and first time visitors. Also, short science center educational programs increased boys', first time visitors', and minority students' knowledge of science concepts found on state standards but did not benefit the average student visitor.

The intention was to collect data using a critical ethnography approach to the methods of qualitative questionnaire and interviews of informal STEM educators. A change in circumstances from the global pandemic of COVID-19 caused a shift in this research plan. A combination of a Critical Pedagogy theoretical framing, review of existing literature, themes from the limited data, and reflection from the pandemic, creates an argument for an increased focus on educational equity within informal science education field trip programming. This thesis particularly highlights the need to address white supremacy in informal education. The hope is that this thesis can serve as an instigator for future research and a resource for informal education practitioners.
