Book excerpt: La historia de la arquitectura y del arte sudamericanos es algo que ya ha sido escrito -y se sigue escribiendo- gracias a los especialistas: espanoles, europeos, norteamericanos y ahora tambien sudamericanos. Damian Bayon, historiador y critico nacido en la Argentina, que ha vivido la mitad de su vida en Francia, no podia dejar de tocar el tambien ese tema. Discipulo de Pierre Francastel, Bayon aplica los metodos de la llamada escuela de Les Annales (del nombre de la revista) que atribuye mucha importancia a lo social y lo economico dentro del contexto de la historia cultural. No se pone a escribir una historia mas -trabajo colectivo a esa escala-, sino que a partir de ejemplos concretos pasa a discutir los puntos de vista tradicionalmente aceptados. Los de los que fueron sus maestros y los de sus companeros de generacion. A traves de ciertas obras "clave" -bien conservadas o restauradas-, Bayon desmonta uno a uno cada uno de los que el considera "lugares comunes": la exclusividad hispana en un arte que el cree "europeo"; la casi no ingerencia del espiritu indigena en una arquitectura y decoracion sacadas principalmente de los tratados; la nocion misma de "estilo" aplicada mecanicamente a las cosas sudamericanas. Para el no hay tal "barroco eterno" en un continente en que la mayoria de las catedrales -por ejemplo- son clasicas; tambien piensa que retablos e imagenes deben ser considerados como formando bloque con la arquitectura religiosa cuyo rasgo principal constituyen. En una palabra: por su informacion, por la extensa y reciente bibliografia que maneja, el libro de Bayon resulta una interesante introduccion a un estudio que ya tiene sus eruditos y empieza a tener tambien susinterpretes.
