Book Synopsis Evaluation of Quality of Fruits and Vegetables by : Harold E. Pattee
Download or read book Evaluation of Quality of Fruits and Vegetables written by Harold E. Pattee and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-14 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acceptance or rejection of any edible commodity, whether it is raw or processed, is usually conditioned by sensory stimuli. The impact of these stimuli on the decision-making proce·ss is broadly termed sensory evaluation. Advances in sensory evaluation research have been slow in the past because of the human factor-the necessity to use highly trained sensory panels to conduct this research. High technology in strumentation and new understandings of sensory evaluations are now combining to make possible quantum jumps forward in sensory eval uation research. It is widely recognized that the sensory aspects of fruits and vegeta bles are affected by many factors, among them environment, variety, cultural practices, and handling practices. However, if one attempts to find a general reference or compilation of findings regarding this sub ject area there seems to be few, if any, available. A survey of the literature does suggest that in the past few years research into specific factors which influence the sensory aspects of fruits and vegetables has increased significantly. This increased interest in sensory research and the renewed national awareness of the value of research into pre and postharvest quality of fruits and vegetables prompted the Flavor Subdivision, Agricultural and Food Chemistry Division, American Chemical Society to sponsor a symposium entitled "Sensory Evalua tion of Fruits and Vegetables: Effect of Environment, Cultural Prac tices and Variety" during the 1982 meeting in Kansas City, Missouri.

Book Synopsis Tools for Drought Mitigation in Mediterranean Regions by : Giuseppe Rossi
Download or read book Tools for Drought Mitigation in Mediterranean Regions written by Giuseppe Rossi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing risk of severe droughts and water shortages emphasizes the need for an integrated approach to drought mitigation. However, effective tools for the implementation of such an approach have not been available till now. This book contributes to an improved preparedness for drought in water supply systems, providing tools useful for a better decision making process in drought management. It presents methods and software features of a Decision Support System (DSS) developed within a European research project and consists of three main parts. The first part deals with the advanced techniques for hydrological drought identification and monitoring; the second analyses the successful use of climate-crop-soil models in defining deficit irrigation strategies; the third provides tools for improving the operation of irrigation supply reservoirs.

Book Synopsis Emerging Technologies for Shelf-Life Enhancement of Fruits by : Basharat Nabi Dar
Download or read book Emerging Technologies for Shelf-Life Enhancement of Fruits written by Basharat Nabi Dar and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on new technological interventions involved in the postharvest management of fruits, this volume looks at the research on maintaining the quality of fruits from farm to table. The volume examines the factors that contribute to shortening shelf life as well as innovative solutions to maintaining quality while increasing the length of time fruit remains fresh, nutritious, and edible. The volume considers the different needs of the diversity of fruits and covers a variety of important topics, including: • factors affecting the postharvest quality of fruits • microbial spoilage • decontamination of fruits by non-thermal technologies • new kinds of packaging and edible coatings • ozone as shelf-life extender of fruits. Emerging Technologies for Shelf-Life Enhancement of Fruits considers the fundamental issues and will be an important reference on shelf-life extension of fruits. Highlighting the trends in future research and development, it will provide food technologists, food engineers, and food industry professionals with new insight for prolonging the shelf life of fruits.
