Development of morality which involves ability to make moral judgements is one of the most vital psychological events in the process of social development of an individual. In course of the life span development, the experiences of a child with his/her family, peers and other adults, influence his/her moral development substantially in coordination with the physical, cognitive, emotional and social skills that matures with time. Moral Competence is the skill to do the right thing or it is the ability to consistently behave according to the accepted ethical principles. It involves an array of moral traits which is shaped by multiple factors. One of the major determinants of moral competence is the 'Values' that includes the personal values and the cultural value system governing the individual. Values enable people to select and justify actions, to evaluate events and people including the self. Personal values are inherent in the individual and the cultural value system is the set of principles whereby conduct is directed and regulated, providing guidelines both for individuals and the social groups. Human behaviour and actions are guided by the relative importance of a set of relevant values and most human attitudes and behaviour are guided by multiple values. This study was conducted to explore the relationship between Universal Psychological Values and Moral Competence in a global sample of 331 males and 645 females totalling 976. The mean age of the sample is 35.82 with a standard deviation of 13.63. Analysis of the results of the study revealed significant relationship between Psychological Values and Moral Competence.

Cross-cultural comparative studies of national values and ethics have attracted growing research interest in recent years, because shared practices, values and ethical standards depend on shared beliefs. However, the findings of such studies have been unable to reach a consensus on the impact of culture on ethics-related attitudes and behavior. Empirically, many "cross-cultural" differences reported by previous studies might actually stem from cross national differences. In order to partially fill this gap, this study advocates an analytical framework that isolates the role of cultural and national differences in order to test their relationship to individual level variables. Within this framework, we test competing hypotheses based on both cultural and national contexts by comparing groups of Chinese and American respondents together with a "bridging group" of Chinese Chinese-Americans. Theoretically, this contextual approach helps resolve the debate on the role of culture, by showing that culture plays a far more important role in shaping value orientations than the national background. Specifically, the two ethnic Chinese groups had many cultural values in common, and differed significantly from the Caucasian group. Implications are discussed.

Book excerpt: Many business schools profess a commitment to ethics in their mission statements and focus a spotlight on the intersection between the university's mission and attention to business ethics. To explore this trend, we analyze a sample of students' values from two universities with an explicit religious foundation and recognized commitment to ethics against students from another university where this attention is not as explicit. This study identifies the personal values orientations (PVOs) for these students, born between 1980 and 2000, thus millennials, and considers if differences can be attributed to the university's culture and mission or business school curriculum. We utilize Social Identity Theory as a promising framework for illuminating these considerations. Our results confirm that a religious-orientation characterizing a university's mission may influence the business students' (or millennials') PVOs. Students at the two religious institutions manifested a stronger social, rather than personal, and moral, rather than competence, value orientation. Only marginal differences were discovered when assessing within group differences in the value orientations among our sample of business students.
