This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this work was to determine the influence of in-cylinder flows on the natural gas combustion process in configurations representative of light duty vehicle spark ignition engines. Specifically, the influence of the flow field on the flame kernel development period was of interest. The interactions between the flow field and the combustion process were quantified by correlating characteristic in-cylinder fluid flow and mass burn rate parameters. The fluid motion, flame kernel development and the overall combustion duration were characterised using: (i) a two-component laser Doppler velocimeter for the in-cylinder fluid flow, (ii) a fibre-optic instrumented spark plug for the flame kernel growth rate, and (iii) a piezo-electric pressure transducer for the in-cylinder pressure from which the overall mass burn rate data is obtained. The measurements were made on an individual cycle basis. Results from a single cylinder V6 optical engine are reported. Physical interpretations of: (i) the flow field evolution and (ii) the interactions between the flow field and the natural gas combustion process are presented. The main contributions of this work are through: (i) the application of novel data processing techniques, and (ii) the exploration of the fibre-optic instrumented spark plug as a measurement technique in high swirl engines. For example, the discrete wavelet transform is used to show: (i) the energy cascade process in the non-stationary engine flow field over crank angle phase and frequency; and (ii) how the flow field evolution influences the early stages of the natural gas combustion process. The fibre-optic instrumented spark plug is shown to measure a mass-weighted velocity. Data from the fibre-optic instrumented spark plug data are shown to be biased by the large convection velocities in high swirl engines. This work provides the foundation upon which further investigations into the influence of different in-cylinder flows on the natural gas combustion process in spark ignition engines can be based.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains selected papers prepared for the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Unsteady Combustion", which was held in Praia da Granja, Portugal, 6-17 September 1993. Approximately 100 delegates from 14 countries attended. The Institute was the most recent in a series beginning with "Instrumentation for Combustion and Flow in Engines", held in Vimeiro, Portugal 1987 and followed by "Combusting Flow Diagnostics" conducted in Montechoro, Portugal in 1990. Together, these three Institutes have covered a wide range of experimental and theoretical topics arising in the research and development of combustion systems with particular emphasis on gas-turbine combustors and internal combustion engines. The emphasis has evolved roughly from instrumentation and experimental techniques to the mixture of experiment, theory and computational work covered in the present volume. As the title of this book implies, the chief aim of this Institute was to provide a broad sampling of problems arising with time-dependent behaviour in combustors. In fact, of course, that intention encompasses practically all possibilities, for "steady" combustion hardly exists if one looks sufficiently closely at the processes in a combustion chamber. The point really is that, apart from the excellent paper by Bahr (Chapter 10) discussing the technology of combustors for aircraft gas turbines, little attention is directed to matters of steady performance. The volume is divided into three parts devoted to the subjects of combustion-induced oscillations; combustion in internal combustion engines; and experimental techniques and modelling.

It brings together the state-of-the-art on specific aspects of the current energy status, and covers a wide range of energy and engineering systems, from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles, from the atmosphere, solar and wind, to underground geothermal and underwater turbines and energy storage. The book demonstrates how conventional internal combustion engines have advanced dramatically in terms of both performance and emissions over the past century. It also studies how life-supporting elements, such as water and greenhouses, must be prioritized and protected to ensure a sustainable future. The book offers a valuable source of information for future leaders, engineers, environmentalists, social forerunners, and decision-makers alike. It also provides a reference guide for both undergraduate and graduate students in engineering, the natural and social sciences, business and economics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is becoming evident that satisfying the ever-increasing global demand for energy is having a major impact on the environment. The technologies required to minimize such impacts are discussed here in an in-depth overview and review of a broad spectrum of energy and environmental issues. The first five sections of the book deal directly with scientific and technological topics: the production, transportation, and utilization of electric power; thermal science and engineering for energy conservation/utilization processes; gas hydrates; multiphase mechanics for energy and environmental technology; pollutants and radioactive wastes in the earth. The sixth section, unique in a book of this type, focuses on education, recording a panel discussion on solutions to problems of energy and environment. For specialists and nonspecialists alike, the book is thus a valuable guide to the technological challenges for the future.
