Book excerpt: This study evaluated the impact of polymer modification, without changing the base binder, on the intermediate- temperature cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures characterized using the Indirect Tensile Asphalt Cracking Test (IDEAL-CT) and the Illinois Flexibility Index Test (I-FIT). Twelve asphalt mixtures prepared with two mix designs and six virgin binders (including two unmodified and four polymer-modified asphalt binders per mix design) were evaluated. Each mixture was tested at three binder contents and two temperatures: 25°C and an equal stiffness temperature (T=G*). In almost all cases, the polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) and unmodified mixtures with the same base binder had statistically equivalent IDEAL-CT and I-FIT results, indicating a lack of sensitivity to polymer modification. Increasing the binder content or adjusting the test temperature to T=G* did not discriminate the PMA and unmodified mixtures in the two tests. Interaction diagram analysis of the IDEAL-CT and I-FIT results showed that polymer modification generally affected the toughness and post-peak behavior of the mixture, but these effects tended to offset each other on the final cracking index parameters. Unlike the IDEAL-CT and I-FIT, the two cyclic loading tests evaluated in the study demonstrated the benefits of polymer modification. This discrepancy highlighted the potential limitation of the monotonic loading tests in assessing the fatigue cracking resistance of PMA binders and mixtures. Finally, asphalt binders extracted from the PMA versus unmodified mixtures with the same base binder showed distinctly different rheological properties, but these differences were not captured in the IDEAL-CT or I-FIT when the test variability was considered.

Book excerpt: In the recent past, new materials, laboratory and in-situ testing methods and construction techniques have been introduced. In addition, modern computational techniques such as the finite element method enable the utilization of sophisticated constitutive models for realistic model-based predictions of the response of pavements. The 7th RILEM International Conference on Cracking of Pavements provided an international forum for the exchange of ideas, information and knowledge amongst experts involved in computational analysis, material production, experimental characterization, design and construction of pavements. All submitted contributions were subjected to an exhaustive refereed peer review procedure by the Scientific Committee, the Editors and a large group of international experts in the topic. On the basis of their recommendations, 129 contributions which best suited the goals and the objectives of the Conference were chosen for presentation and inclusion in the Proceedings. The strong message that emanates from the accepted contributions is that, by accounting for the idiosyncrasies of the response of pavement engineering materials, modern sophisticated constitutive models in combination with new experimental material characterization and construction techniques provide a powerful arsenal for understanding and designing against the mechanisms and the processes causing cracking and pavement response deterioration. As such they enable the adoption of truly "mechanistic" design methodologies. The papers represent the following topics: Laboratory evaluation of asphalt concrete cracking potential; Pavement cracking detection; Field investigation of pavement cracking; Pavement cracking modeling response, crack analysis and damage prediction; Performance of concrete pavements and white toppings; Fatigue cracking and damage characterization of asphalt concrete; Evaluation of the effectiveness of asphalt concrete modification; Crack growth parameters and mechanisms; Evaluation, quantification and modeling of asphalt healing properties; Reinforcement and interlayer systems for crack mitigation; Thermal and low temperature cracking of pavements; and Cracking propensity of WMA and recycled asphalts.

Book excerpt: Reflective cracking in asphalt overlays placed over jointed concrete pavement has been a concern of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) for years. Although there are many techniques to delay crack propagation through an asphalt overlay, they may require specialized equipment, unique mix designs, or other specific mixture additives. The introduction of highly polymer-modified (HP) binders to the market brings forward a new potential crack mitigation method requiring only the use of the HP binder in an asphalt mixture to provide mitigation. Before asphalt mixtures with HP binder were used on a jointed concrete overlay project, a trial project to evaluate the constructability and laboratory performance of a mixture using this type of binder was conducted. The trial project compared an asphalt surface mixture with an HP binder and a standard surface mixture (control) in a mill and resurfacing pavement project in a subdivision in Northern Virginia. The asphalt surface mixture with the HP binder was found to be constructible without major changes in paving operations; in addition, the laboratory performance was equivalent or superior to that of the control mixture. The results were promising enough to support investigating the use of HP binders in asphalt mixtures over jointed concrete as a reflective crack mitigation technique or when deemed appropriate as a tool for increased crack resistance. The study recommends that VDOT consider the use of asphalt mixtures with HP binders as a tool for increased crack resistance when deemed appropriate by the appropriate VDOT decision maker (e.g., the district materials engineer). The study also recommends that the Virginia Transportation Research Council and the VDOT districts with concerns about reflective cracking potential in asphalt overlays investigate the use of HP mixtures as a reflective crack mitigation layer.

Book excerpt: Ohio Department of Transportation has adopted the hot mix asphalt concrete containing polymer modifiers for use in the interstate highway pavement. Among the various reasons cited for the adoption of polymer modifiers are the favorable field experiences by ODOT, extensive literatures reporting enhanced performance, such as rutting resistance, low temperature thermal cracking resistance, and possibly fatigue endurance. However, despite these favorable findings, there are still cases involving premature failure of hot mixtures containing polymer modifiers. Concerns regarding optimum polymer content, compatibility between polymer additives and asphalt cement, proper mixing and compaction procedure remain to be resolved. Furthermore, performance based specifications to ensure production of desirable final asphalt concrete product require additional development. Questions regarding the suitability of Superpave binder testing procedures for the polymer-modified binders need to be clarified.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) specifies polymer-modified asphalt binders for certain asphalt mixtures used on high-volume, high-priority routes. These binders must meet performance grade (PG) requirements for a PG 76-22 binder in addition to elastic recovery requirements. This typically results in the use of binders containing styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) modifiers. However, other polymer modifiers may also be used to achieve the PG 76-22 classification. One of these modifiers is a copolymer of SBS and polyethylene (PE) (SBS-PE) another modifier is ground tire rubber (GTR). This study was undertaken to investigate the suitability of SBS PE modified PG 76-22 binder and GTR-modified PG 76-22 binder for use in Virginia. Each modified binder was used in a 12.5 mm nominal maximum aggregate size mixture to pave approximately 2.3 lane-miles. All mixtures were produced as warm mix asphalt using a foaming system. The binders evaluated included a typical SBS polymer-modified binder as a control and binders modified with SBS-PE and GTR. During construction, all processes were documented and material was sampled for evaluation. Binder and mixture tests were performed. Binder testing included performance grading and multiple stress creep and relaxation testing. Mixture testing included volumetric analysis, dynamic modulus, and flow number tests and cracking, rutting, and fatigue analysis. Binder testing indicated that the control binder and SBS PE modified binders met VDOT specifications for classification as a PG 76-22 binder; the GTR-modified binder graded to a PG 70-22 binder, as it did not meet the PG 76-22 high-temperature specification and did not pass the elastic recovery requirement. Laboratory mixture testing indicated that the performance of the SBS PE modified mixture should be similar to that of the control mixture. Laboratory test results for the GTR-modified mixture were mixed, with some indicating that the performance was similar to that of the control mixture and some indicating that the performance may be less than that of the control. Based on the study, SBS PE modified binders should continue to be allowed as an alternative to SBS-modified binder provided specifications for PG 76-22 binders are met. However, further investigation of GTR-modified binders is suggested before recommendations can be made. In addition, long-term evaluation of the field site is recommended for validation of the laboratory findings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sheer volume of topics which could have been included under our general title prompted us to make some rather arbitrary decisions about content. Modification by irradiation is not included because the activity in this area is being treated elsewhere. We have chosen to emphasize chemical routes to modification and have striven to pre sent as balanced a representation of current activity as time and page count permit. Industrial applications, both real and potential, are included. Where appropriate, we have encouraged the contributors to include review material to help provide the reader with adequate context. The initial chapter is a review from a historical perspective of polymer modification and contains an extensive bibliography. The remainder of the book is divided into four general areas: Reactions and Preparation of Copolymers Reactions and Preparation of Block and Graft Copolymers Modification Through Condensation Reactions Applications The chemical modification of homopolymers such as polyvinylchlo ride, polyethylene, poly(chloroalkylene sulfides), polysulfones, poly chloromethylstyrene, polyisobutylene, polysodium acrylate, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl chloroformate, sulfonated polystyrene; block and graft copolymers such as poly(styrene-block-ethylene-co-butylene block-styrene), poly(I,4-polybutadiene-block ethylene oxide), star chlorine-telechelic polyisobutylene, poly(isobutylene-co-2,3-dimethyl- 1,3-butadiene), poly(styrene-co-N-butylmethacrylate); cellulose, dex tran and inulin, is described.

Book excerpt: The design and construction of “long and deep” tunnels, i.e. tunnels under mountains, characterised by either considerable length and/or overburden, represent a considerable challenge. The scope of this book is not to instruct how to design and construct such tunnels but to share a method to identify the potential hazards related to the process of designing and constructing long and deep tunnels, to produce a relevant comprehensive analysis and listing, to quantify the probability and consequences, and to design proper mitigation measures and countermeasures. The design, developed using probabilistic methods, is verified during execution by means of the so called Plan for Advance of the Tunnel (PAT) method, which allows adapting the design and control parameters of the future stretches of the tunnel to the results of the stretches already finished, using the monitoring data base. Numerous criteria are given to identify the key parameters, necessary for the PAT procedure. Best practices of excavation management with the help of real time monitoring and control are also provided. Furthermore cost and time evaluation systems are analysed. Finally, contractual aspects related to construction by contract are investigated, for best development and application of models more appropriate for tunnelling-construction contracts. The work will be of interest to practising engineers, designers, consultants and students in mining, underground, tunnelling, transportation and construction engineering, as well as to foundation and geological engineers, urban planners/developers and architects.
