A large part of phosphorus is discharged into the receiving waters by wastewater. One of the solutions of this problem is represented by chemical precipitation. Simultaneous precipitation of phosphorus from wastewater with metal salts is commonly applied. Metal salts are dosed directly into aeration tank, and produced precipitates are wasted as a part of the secondary sludge. Thus, not only aerobic and anoxic processes of wastewater treatment plant are carried out in the presence of precipitant metals and precipitates but also the precipitates are, in many cases, accumulated in anaerobic sludge digesters. Operational research of phosphorus precipitation in lab-scale encompasses the impact of Fe2+, Fe3+ and Al3+ salts on biological nitrification and denitrification processes, sedimentation and thickening characteristics of sludge as well as anaerobic sludge stabilisation processes. The measurements of specific oxygen uptake rate, nitrification and denitrification tests and monitoring of effluent values of quality standards were applied to evaluate the processes performance. Other objective of our research is to contribute to methodology for examination of thickening and dewatering characteristics of sludge with tested precipitation agents. Mathematically processed experimental results are used to compare sedimentation, precipitation and dewatering characteristics of activated sludge cultivated in the presence of selected precipitation agents. Better description of the experimental results was obtained with three parameters model of particles mass flow density curve. Comparison of minimum sedimentation tank size necessary for gravitational separation of individual sludge was used to examine sedimentation characteristics of activated sludge. Thickening characteristics of sludge were evaluated based upon thickening area needed to maintain the required sludge concentration in activated sludge model, which corresponds to maximum surface load in undissolved substances. Chemical precipitation of phosphorus produces metal precipitates. These are transported with the waste sludge to the digestion tanks. Impact of the precipitates on the anaerobic sludge stabilisation process as well as on the sludge water quality was tested in the work. The main aim of the research and proposed chapter submission is a pursuit of decision making regarding selection of type of precipitating agent and strategy of chemical phosphorus precipitation.

Under this five-year program, phosphorus removal was to be initiated on the discharges of more than 170 existing wastewater treatment plants serving some five million persons. In order to implement this program, a methodology to predict the coagulant best suited for phosphorus removal at any particular treatment facility was required. It was also necessary to determine whether the chemicals used for phosphorus removal would have any physical or process effects on present wastewater treatment processes, facilities, methods of sludge treatment, and subsequent sludge disposal practices. This report discusses coagulation prediction and prime coagulant selection, and the operational results, problems and design considerations derived from a series of full scale studies. The study concluded that phosphorus removal may be readily implemented with minimal capital expenditure at operating municipal wastewater treatment facilities of all designs currently in use in Ontario.

During anaerobic digestion of activated sludge from enhanced biological phosphorus removal process (EBPR-process), most of the phosphorus eliminated during the water treatment, as well as that from cellular lysis, is released. So that, phosphorus concentration in the digester increases and precipitation problems can occur. In this work, anaerobic digestion process of waste activated sludge and primary pre-fermented sludge was studied in a pilot plant. Furthermore, phosphorus balance was performed in order to quantify phosphorus precipitation in the digester. Separate and mixed thickening of sludges was carried out with the aim of study its influence in the process. NOTE: This thesis is in Spanish.

Specific objectives were: to evaluate the removal of phosphorus with alum and sodium aluminate in a pilot plant activated sludge system, to determine the fate of the precipitated phosphorus incorporated into the microbial floc when placed in an anaerobic environment, and to observe the effect of aluminum on the digestion process. Five 38-gpd continuous-flow activated sludge pilot plant units were operated at the Rolla Love Creek trickling filter plant and were fed with settled domestic sewage. The sludge from the pilot plants, mixed with an appropriate quantity of primary sludge from the plant, was used to maintain five 3-1 anaerobic digesters. The parameters employed during the aerobic studies were influent and effluent phosphorus and aluminum, total and volatile suspended solids, and chemical oxygen demand; and those used in the anaerobic studies were phosphorus and aluminum in the feed sludge, the supernatant and the digester sludge, volatile acids, and gas production. The addition of alum and sodium aluminate to the activated sludge aeration chamber effectively removed phosphorus from domestic wastewater without adversely affecting the efficiency of the process. The precipitated phosphorus was concentrated in the digester sludge and was not released to the supernatant during anaerobic digestion, and the high concentration of the aluminum ion in the digester sludge produced no detrimental effects. The chemical precipitation of phosphorus in the activated sludge aeration chamber and anaerobic digestion of the sludge produced were found to be a feasible and effective method of eliminating at least part of the phosphorus input to lakes and streams, and could be incorporated into existing or future treatment plants with little capital expense"--Abstract, leaf ii.

Extended fundamental and full-scale research has been carried out into the bio-P process and the state-of-the-art is described in this report. A summarising historical overview gives insight into the establishment of the appropriate microbiological and biochemical basis of the process and the development of bio-P configurations in practice. Aspects of the bio-P process that have a direct influence on the efficiency of phosphorus removal are subjected to an in-depth investigation. This report presents guidelines for design and dimensioning in order to introduce and/or optimise the bio-P process in practice. Twelve bio-P installations are extensively described and the operational results and experiences are related to existing bio-P knowledge and guidelines. Based on a number of parameters, a comparison is made between the described bio-P plants. A steady state model is verified with extensive periods of practical experience of the plants. The bio-P model, which is provided on CD-ROM (available for download here), offers a reliable insight into the bio-P process, coupled with sensitivity analyses regarding wastewater characteristics and process parameters for the anaerobic volume and the P-ortho concentration in the final effluent. The report ends with a systematic approach to the design of the bio-P process, based on the background of the bio-P process itself, much practical experience and the analysis of operational bio-P plants. Also presented is a systematic approach to tackle operational aspects of the bio-P process in order to generate an acceptable low P effluent concentration. This optimisation of the bio-P process operation is supported by a decision diagram. Biological Phosphorus Removal will be an invaluable source of information for all those concerned with wastewater treatment, including plant managers, process designers, consultants and researchers.
