Book excerpt: The group of saproxylic beetles consists of thousands of different species exhibiting a rich variety of form as well as varied life-cycle strategies. They play an important role in decomposition processes and thus for nutrient-cycling in natural ecosystems. Based on contributions given at the conference this book contains contributions about research on conservation ecology of saproxylic beetles as well as results from recent faunistic surveys in different European regions. It comprises aspects of saproxylic beetle ecology, faunistics, diversity and conservation issues. International experts report on their activity, management strategies and new approaches in saproxylic insect conservation. There are a lot of people doing research on saproxylic beetles in different countries of the world, but this seems to be a little bit disorganized. Hopefully, these European conferences will lead to a better, more international network. The contributions included in this volume cover a broad spectrum of research on saproxylic beetles, organized in three main chapters: "Saproxylic beetle assemblages and regional surveys" include "Oaks in Norway," showing the abundance and composition of red-listed species of beetles in hollow oaks. Further reports on regional surveys deals with a spruce primeval forest in Romania, a hardwood floodplain forest in the Czech Republic, and the Gartow region of Lower Saxony, a hotspot of saproxylic beetle diversity in north-western Germany. "Saproxylic beetle ecology and implications for their conservation" deals with ecological studies of single species, e.g. Limoniscus violaceus, Lucanus cervus, Osmoderma eremita and the worldwide distribution of the genus Cucujus. "Advances in methodology and databases" discusses new techniques in trapping and the development of databases. This volume gives a nice overview of the actual research on saproxylic beetles in Europe and I wish the next conference in 2010 a successful meeting; maybe some people from the UK or even overseas should be invited.

Book excerpt: Understanding the impact of thinning on residual stands helps forest managers achieve management objectives associated with sustainability and quality control. Stand damage control becomes more critical as thinning prescriptions in the Pacific Northwest are increasingly required for intensive management of second-growth young stands. The purpose of this study was to describe damage characteristics caused by various thinning systems, to recommend the best sampling strategy, and to estimate logging damage impact on future timber value. For all logging systems, scarring was the most typical type of damage to crop trees, accounting for more than 90% of the total damage in most cases. Damage was concentrated along the skid trails or the skyline corridors. Harvesters caused more damage (70%) to crop trees in the cut-to-length thinning than did forwarders (30%). Damage levels dropped drastically when larger minimum scar sizes were applied. Damage levels were also greatly influenced by one or more compounding variables such as skid trail width, so that there was no specific relationship between damage level and logging systems. Systematic plot sampling consistently provided estimates similar to the results of a 100% survey. This method also took the least amount of time and effort to lay out on the map and to locate plots in the field. An easy, quick survey method was proposed to monitor residual stand damage for in-progress and post-thinning operations. A quick assessment of damage allows forest managers to control stand damage in current thinning operations and also to determine whether detailed sampling is required for further investigation. All scars that remained open in western hemlock and Sitka spruce sustained advanced decay during the 13 years after initial wounding. Scars less than 10 cm (4 in.) in width were closed in 8 years. Douglas-fir was more resistant to decay, and no rotting was observed in scars less than 21 years old. Advanced rotting and pitch ring defects, however, were observed in 29-year-old scars, both open and closed. Because of these defects, future value loss increased with time after wounding and with higher damage levels. Value loss can justify increased thinning costs incurred for minimizing stand damage.

Book excerpt: This study evaluated the effects of partial cutting on stand structure and growth, patterns of conifer regeneration, stand mortality and disease, and understory plant diversity and abundance. Seventy-three 1/5 ha plots were established in 18 partially cut stands throughout southeast Alaska. These stands were partially cut 12 to 96 years ago removing 16 to 96 percent of the original stand basal area. Partial cutting resulted in stands that had complex structures and these structures appear similar to uncut old-growth stands. Sitka spruce was maintained over a wide range of cutting intensities, and conversion to hemlock-dominated stands generally did not occur. New spruce regeneration was established in 23 of 55 partially cut plots compared with new spruce found in only 2 of the 18 uncut plots. The current stand basal area, tree species composition, and stand growth were strongly related to trees left after harvest. Trees that were 10 to 70 cm d.b.h. at time of cutting had the greatest tree diameter growth. Little of the stand growth since harvest came from new regeneration or trees greater than 70 cm d.b.h. The diameter growth of residual hemlock and spruce trees were similar The species richness of vascular plants and bryophytes was similar among uncut and partially cut plots and did not significantly change with different cutting intensities. Overall, plant community structures were similar between the uncut and partially cut plots. However, moderate and heavy cutting intensities resulted in stands that had significantly different plant community composition. The abundance of most deer forage plants did not significantly change after partial cutting. It appears that silvicultural systems that use single tree selection or small openings can be successful for timber management purposes in southeast Alaska. Concerns about changing tree species composition, lack of spruce regeneration, greatly reduced stand growth and vigor, increased dwarf mistletoe infection in hemlock trees, and higher incidence of tree wounding, decay, and mortality with partial cuts were largely unsubstantiated. Stand structural diversity, species richness and understory plant abundance were all greater in partially cut stands than in young-growth stands developing after clearcutting.
