It was found in the first experiment that both sensitivity (d') and degree of conservatism in responding (beta) were correlated for the two tasks. The auditory task was more difficult than the visual under the chosen conditions. Higher betas were noted for Os first performing on the visual task. In the second experiment, the tasks were more closely equated in difficulty, and Os performed both the auditory and the visual task twice. The effect of order previously noted for beta was not obtained. Beta and d' were again significantly correlated for the first session; for the second session significant correlations were obtained for d' but not beta. The results suggest that not only are there response biases common to detection in different modalities but also common factors affecting sensitivity. (Author).

The experiments with temporally-coded auditory patterns showed how listeners' attention is influenced by the position and the amount of information carried by different segments of the pattern. Analyses of group signal detection included mathematical analyses, computer simulations, and human experiments. These analyses specified the effects on performance of team member ability, team decision rule, correlation between member judgments, and type of member interaction. The results of this research may be useful for improving the design of auditory display systems and for optimizing the performance of decision making teams.

Book excerpt: Social (psychological and sociological) systems present considerable difficulties for modellers due to their complexity, multidimensionality, uncertainty and irreducibility. The book proposes that response functions (MRF) be used as a method of constructing purposeful, credible and integrated social systems' models from data and prior knowledge or information. A semi-empirical, or "grey-box", MRF model may be regarded as a trade-off between a knowledge-based model and a "black-box" (empirical) model. It may embody all the existing knowledge on the process (or a part thereof) and, in addition, it relies on parameterised functions, whose parameters are determined from measurements. Observations contain hidden information on the processes under consideration and one of the main purposes of the proposed method is to "extract" and describe these hidden relationships. Parameterisation offers ways to couple qualitative with quantitative analysis. This combination makes it possible to take into account all the phenomena that are not modelled with the required accuracy through prior knowledge. Although only a simplified picture of the processes is modelled, a "grey box" system model provides some insight into the system processes. These processes are featured by chains of causality, highlighting stressors and variables responsive to stressors. The method of response functions is a nonlinear regression method that implies credible models in the sense that they are identifiable and, hopefully, explain system output behaviour satisfactorily. For case studies the authors have selected the problems usually studied by psychologists and sociologists with statistical procedures, such as investigation of variance and discriminant analysis based on the general linear model or one of its multivariate generalisations (structural equation models, etc.); disordered eating and obesity; subjective well-being and alexithymia. An accompanying CD-ROM contains the demonstration versions of three models that are discussed in the various chapters.The Method of Response Functions in Psychology and Sociology is aimed at Mathematical Psychologists; Mathematical Sociologists; Applied Psychologists; Sociologists and Social Practitioners. Book excerpt: Music provides us a complex, rapidly changing acoustic spectrum, and when presented with such stimuli, the human auditory system spontaneously groups acoustic elements together. Real-world experience of rhythm is often multisensory, involving both auditory and visual systems, such as when we observe drumming. However, the manner in which auditory grouping behavior is influenced by concurrent temporal cues from visual stimuli is not fully known yet. This study investigates audio-visual interaction in rhythm perception. The central questions addressed are whether visual rhythm influences human’s rhythmic grouping of auditory event sequences, and whether musical training intensifies or weakens this influence. Two experiments were conducted. The preliminary experiment was developed to identify the visual stimuli, natural versus artificial, that would be appropriate to the present inquiry. Participants were recruited for a synchronized tapping test to natural visual stimuli and artificial visual stimuli. The stability of the synchronization and the rate of re-synchronization were measured in a synchronization task. The results show that participants’ synchronization performance of temporal perception was better with natural visual stimuli, which justified the use of a natural visual stimulus as the rhythmic stimulus in the main study on temporal perception. The main study testified the audio-visual interaction through a grouping task. Trained musicians and non-musicians were recruited. In the experiment, participants were asked to perform a grouping task through tapping to a cyclical 12-tone drumbeat sequence with different stress patterns that indicated different grouping structure tendencies (either duplets or triplets). While listening, they were asked to simultaneously watch visual stimuli 1) with duple cueing gestures; 2) with triple cueing gestures; or 3) without any cue. The results show that subjects’ duple/triple grouping choice is significantly related to the concurrent visual stimuli with duple/triple cues, and that visual rhythm had a much greater influence on musicians’ auditory grouping behavior than on that of non-musicians. The result of the first experiment, which incorporated novel and realistic visual stimuli in a rhythm perception task, bolsters the rationale of using closer-to-reality experimental designs. The result of the main study demonstrated and highlighted the role of visual sense in multisensory rhythm perception. Moreover, the current study also found that the audio-visual interaction in rhythmic grouping is correlated to long-term music training, and this finding contributes to the body of knowledge on the process of rhythmic perception.
