Book excerpt: Despite significant developments and widespread theoretical and practical interest in the area of Solid-Propellant Nonsteady Combustion for the last fifty years, a comprehensive and authoritative text on the subject has not been available. Theory of Solid-Propellant Nonsteady Combustion fills this gap by summarizing theoretical approaches to the problem within the framework of the Zeldovich-Novozhilov (ZN-) theory. This book contains equations governing unsteady combustion and applies them systematically to a wide range of problems of practical interest. Theory conclusions are validated, as much as possible, against available experimental data. Theory of Solid-Propellant Nonsteady Combustion provides an accurate up-to-date account and perspectives on the subject and is also accompanied by a website hosting solutions to problems in the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combustion instability is a problem that has plagued the development of rocket-propelled devices since their conception. It is characterized by the occurrence of high-frequency nonlinear gas oscillations inside the combustion chamber. This phenomenon degrades system performance and can result in damage to both structure and instrumentation. The goal of this dissertation is to clarify the role of unsteady combustion in the combustor instability problem by providing the first quantified estimates of its effect upon the stability of liquid rocket engines. The combination of this research with a new system energy balance method, accounting for all dynamic interactions within a system, allows for the isolation of combustion effects for this study. These effects are quantified through use of classical linear stability analysis to calculate the unsteady combustion heat release growth rate. Since combustion modeling can become very involved, including the mixing process and multiple reactions concerned, for this initial evaluation the model is limited to a one-dimensional flame analysis for a one-step premixed chemical reaction. Using classical analysis of oscillatory burning, the governing combustion equations are expanded into sets of steady and unsteady equations adapted for premixed liquid rockets. From this expansion process, the first real treatment of the effects of unsteady combustion in a rocket system is presented, and the first quantified values of the unsteady heat release in a rocket system are computed. Finally, the corresponding linear heat release growth rate for the system is then calculated for the first quantified effects of unsteady combustion on the overall system stability. The mechanism of unsteady combustion is shown to behave as a driving mechanism, serving as one of the more important stability mechanisms comparable to the magnitude of the nozzle damping mechanism. This analysis confirms that unsteady combustion is an important stability mechanism that warrants further investigation. This study also creates a firm foundation upon which to extend the analysis of this important mechanism to fully understand all of its effects within a rocket system.

Book excerpt: A nonlinear stability analysis of solid rocket propellant burning was carried out, within the framework of a thermal theory for thin (quasi-steady gas phase) heterogeneous flames. This required an integral method in reducing the partial differential equation for the condensed phase heat conduction to an approximate ordinary differential equation. A nonlinear algebraic function, called static restoring function, was found that contains all basic properties of equilibrium and stability of burning solid propellants. This function depends on the nature of the solid propellant (including its flame) and the operating conditions. Analysis of the static restoring function reveals the existence of lower and upper burning stabilities. Nonlinear static and dynamic burning stability boundaries were determined and stability properties of several unsteady flame models were compared. Domains of stationary reacting solutions, damped oscillatory burning, self-sustained oscillatory burning, non sustained burning were singled out. Pressure deflagration limit was evaluated. Validity and plausible extensions of this theory are discussed. Most of the analytical predictions were verified by computer simulated burning tests. Experimental results obtained in shock tube apparatus, depressurization strand burner, laser doppler velocimetry rig are presented. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space Activity: Impact on Science and Technology contains the proceedings of the 24th International Astronautical Congress held in the USSR on October 7-13, 1973. Contributors focus on the contribution of space research to the development of science and technology, including biology and medicine. This text begins with a discussion on the role played by Soviet automatic vehicles in the progress of space automatics and control theory. The discussion then turns to the problems of space technology and their implications for science and technology, industrial applications of aerospace technology, and development of liquid-propellant rocket engineering technology in the USSR. The chapters that follow explore the contribution of space medicine to public health; the role of astronautics in the development of methods of celestial mechanics; the flight performance of the unmanned Skylab space station; and remote sensing of the environment and earth's resources studies from Soviet manned spacecraft. The book concludes with an appraisal of international standards for model rocket engines. This book will be of interest to students of astronomy as well as researchers and practitioners working in the field of space exploration and research.
