Book excerpt: Recently, the concept of performance based design has become popular for many types of structures, including port facilities under seismic loading. For the case of pile-supported wharves, the level of performance is generally estimated using the displacement capacity of the structure. Therefore, understanding soil-pile interaction is one of the most critical factors for estimating performance. One of the biggest challenges on the displacement estimation is defining the soil parameters. However, only limited information is available in the literature on the behavior of laterally loaded piles in the large-diameter rockfill typically used in port dike construction, where the particle size approaches the pile diameter. In light of this, a series of full-scale lateral load tests on piles in the rockfill were conducted in order to obtain a better understanding of the performance of the wharf deck pile-soil system against lateral loading, and reaction mechanism in rockfill. All the tests were conducted successfully, and large amount of useful data and some important observations were obtained during and after the tests. Following the experiments, numerical analyses were conducted with a set of soil dependant stiffness curves (i.e. p-y curves) currently used for design practice. These results were compared with the test results in order to assess the validity of the current design approach. It was concluded that those p-y curves could provide reasonable rotation and deflection profiles along the test piles, but gave considerably underestimated ultimate lateral resistance of the pile-soil system. In order to find possible reasons for this, the observations during and after the tests were carefully reviewed. Based on the review, it was found that the lateral reaction from the rockfill under low confinement plays a very important role. Considering particulate mechanism in the rockfill, a reasonable hypothesis was developed; i.e. the lateral reaction from the rockfill is a combination of reactions due to both friction and interlocking between large rock particles. Based on this hypothesis, backcalculation of the p-y curves was carried out comparing the experimental and numerical results, and it was concluded that addition of the interlocking concept to the p-y curves used in the current design methodology significantly improved performance.

Models representing pile-supported wharf configurations common in the United States were subjected to recorded acceleration time histories. Model variations included single-lift, multi-lift, and cut-slope rock dike configurations with foundation layers of loose liquefiable sand, marine clay, or dense sand, or a combination thereof. In addition, zones of soil were placed to model soil improvement. Structural elements representing pile-supported wharf geometries were placed within the models; some models included all vertical piles, while two of the models included batter piles. In addition, single piles were placed in two of the models and subjected to static cyclic lateral load tests. All models were extensively instrumented with nearly 100 instruments recording accelerations, pore pressures, linear deformations, and pile strains. This paper summarizes the design, construction, and testing of these complex models, and includes a brief summary of the results and recommendations for future modeling.

In general, batter piles are known to have more lateral resistance than the vertical piles, but limited research has been conducted on them because of application limitations and the fact that interpreting construction equipment is difficult. Additionally, field application cases are rarely used for off-shore plants in which lateral loads have a great effect on the foundations of wind power structures. In a single pile, the interaction behavior of a subgrade-pile is so complicated that accurate predictions are impossible. This study is designed to aid in understanding the behavioral characteristics of group batter piles on which a lateral load acts through a model test. The experiments were conducted with 22 single batter piles and 48 group batter piles, and the results showed that the lateral resistance increased as the tilt angle rose. Furthermore, the lateral resistance was at its peak when the lateral loading angle was 60°, and the resistance of the front pile was greater than that of the rear pile. The bending moment, according to the angle of tilt, changed as the group of piles generally increased and as the angle of tilt rose for both the front and rear piles. The action position of the maximum bending moment tends to go up toward the upper part of the piles as the angle of tilt rises for the front and rear piles.

In situ large-scale physical modeling using surface wave generator was performed to study the dynamic soil-structure interactions in pile-supported wharves and to verify configuration of an in situ monitoring station. A wharf model consisting of two steel pipe piles welded on a steel slab was installed on a reconstituted underwater embankment. Due to screening of stress waves, the two piles are subjected to different loading conditions. Data reduction procedures were developed to analyze coupled shear strain-pore pressure generation behavior, pile responses, and soil-pile interaction characteristics. The results proved that the physical modeling can capture the interactions among the induced shear strain, generated excess pore pressure, and dynamic p-y behavior around piles. Preliminary results also show that evolutions of dynamic p-y curve with excess pore pressure variations should be included in soil-pile interaction modeling.

Book excerpt: Pile foundations that support offshore structures are required to resist not only static loading, but also dynamic loading from waves, wind and earthquakes. The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of the behavior of offshore piles under cyclic or dynamic loading using the finite element approach. To achieve this goal, an appropriate constitutive model is required to simulate the behavior of soils and interfaces. The DSC constitutive model is developed for saturated interfaces to study the behavior under severe shear deformation at the soil-pile interface. Monotonic and cyclic simple shear experiments are conducted on Ottawa sand-steel interfaces under drained and undrained conditions using the Cyclic-Multi-Degree-of-Freedom shear device with porewater pressure measurement (CYMDOF-P). The effect of various parameters such as normal stress, surface roughness of steel, type of loading, and the amplitude and frequency of the applied displacement in two-way cyclic loading are investigated. The data from the simple shear tests on saturated interfaces are used to calculate the parameters in the DSC model. The resulting parameters are then used to verify the DSC model by back predicting tests from which parameters are determined and independent tests that are not used in parameters determination. The model predictions, in general, were found to provide a highly satisfactory correlation with the observations. In the context of DSC, the concept of critical disturbance is developed to identify initiation of liquefaction in saturated Ottawa sand-steel interfaces. This method is based on using microstructural changes in material as an indication of liquefaction identification. The finite element method, along with DSC constitutive model, is used to investigate the response of offshore piles to dynamic loading. These include cyclic loading of axially loaded instrumented pile in clay and full-scale laterally loaded pile in sand. The DSC model is used to model the nonlinear behavior of saturated soils and interfaces. A nonlinear dynamic finite element program DSC-DYN2D based on the DSC modeling approach and the theory of nonlinear porous media is used for this purpose. Results from numerical solutions are compared with field measurements. Strong agreement between numerical predictions and field measurements are an indication of the ability to solve challenging soil-structure interaction problems. Based on the results of this research, it can be stated that the finite element-DSC model simulation allows realistic prediction of complex dynamic offshore pile-soil interaction problems, and is capable of characterizing behavior of saturated soils and interfaces involving liquefaction.
