Book excerpt: A IUTAM (International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics) Sympo sium 'Mechanics and Physics of Bubbles in Liquids' was held at Pasadena, Calif., USA from 15 through 19 June 1981. The present volume contains the printed version of nearly all papers read at the Symposium. The study of the behaviour of bubbles in liquids was originally stimu lated by problems in cavitation and in boiling ofliquids. Today research is initiated by problems in many other fields as well. In this respect a growing interest from the side of biomechanics may be mentioned. Ordering of the papers could be done either according to the various mechanical and physical aspects of the subject or according to the fields of application. The presentaton at the Symposium contained a bit of both; there was a session on physico-chemical aspects for example and also a session on biological applications. The subdivision in this volume follows roughly the sessions in the Symposium. Most of them start with a paper of a survey nature, reporting progress made in recent years. Here, as in other fields of engineering science, one notes the important part played by experimental techniques and by numerical analysis.

Book excerpt: Lorsqu'une bulle de cavitation implose au voisinage d'une paroi plane, on observe différents phénomènes : migration de la bulle vers la paroi, formation d'un micro-jet liquide qui transperce la bulle et percute violemment la paroi et émissions d'ondes de choc dont l'interaction avec la paroi est également destructrice. Ces phénomènes contribuent significativement à l'érosion de cavitation, c'est à dire l'usure progressive d'une paroi solide délimitant l'écoulement par des bulles de cavitation. Nous avons étudié expérimentalement la tenue de revêtements élastomériques (polyuréthanne) à l'érosion de cavitation optique, c'est à dire causée par des bulles de cavitation isolées créées par laser. Il en ressort que l'élastomère de polyuréthanne développé pour cette étude est plus résistant que l'acier inox et le CaviTec (parmi les matériaux métalliques les plus résistants à ce type d'agression). Nous avons en outre mis en évidence quelques tendances pour optimiser le revêtement élastomérique. Enfin, nous avons réalisé une expérience de cavitation optique sous 40 bars statique afin d'étudier l'interaction bulle/paroi et l'érosion qui en résulte dans des conditions se rapprochant des conditions industrielles d'écoulement autour d'augets Pelton. Il s'avère que l'élastomère demeure le matériau le plus résistant et qu'un million de bulles (contre 180000 pour le CaviTec) sont nécessaires pour observer une rupture ductile qui serait due à la présence de charges minérales.

Book excerpt: Preface Adhesion is a phenomenon architects and civil engineers are not very familiar with. In other disciplines knowledge about surface properties and the background of bonding energies is also far from satisfactory; nevertheless there are many important· applications in concrete engineering, where adhesion is necessary for success and durability. These include: - coating and painting - repair of concrete surfaces - bonding of fresh to old concrete - crack injection - glueing of precast elements - glueing of steel to concrete, etc. In 1981 RILEM established the technical committee 52-RAC 'Resin Adherence to Concrete'. The main aims of the committee's work were - to collect research results and practical experiences - to initiate and coordinate research programs - to develop, on a scientific base, test methods for field and for laboratory purposes. One of the results of the committee's work is a state-of-the-art report, which will be presented orally as a General Report at the International Symposium ISAP '86, and will be printed either in the RILEM journal Materials and Structures or separately. Several test recommendations have been elaborated and will be prepared as drafts for the participants ofISAP '86.
