Book Synopsis Dynamics of Fluids in Hierarchical Porous Media by : John H. Cushman
Download or read book Dynamics of Fluids in Hierarchical Porous Media written by John H. Cushman and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have produced an explosion of research on the transport of fluid mixtures in natural, heterogeneous porous media. During this period it has become apparent that many, if not most, porous media, such as soil and geologic formations, possess a hierarchical structure. This text ties together the most recent and powerful theoretical, computational, and experimental methods for studying such media. It provides the stimulus necessary to bring about a successful resolution of many of the complex problems associated with transport in natural porous media--be they in a groundwater contamination or a petroleum engineering context.
Book Synopsis IUTAM Symposium on Physicochemical and Electromechanical, Interactions in Porous Media by : Jacques P. Huyghe
Download or read book IUTAM Symposium on Physicochemical and Electromechanical, Interactions in Porous Media written by Jacques P. Huyghe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-10-18 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decades, new experimental and numerical techniques have taken many advanced features of porous media mechanics down to practical engineering applications. This happened in areas that sometimes were not even suspected to be open to engineering ideas at all. The challenge that often faces engineers in the field of geomechanics, biomechanics, rheology and materials science is the translation of ideas existing in one field to solutions in the other. The purpose of the IUTAM symposium from which this proceedings volume has been compiled was to dive deep into the mechanics of those porous media that involve mechanics and chemistry, mechanics and electromagnetism, mechanics and thermal fluctuations of mechanics and biology. The different sections have purposely not been formed according to field interest, but on the basis of the physics involved.

Book Synopsis Physical Aspects of Soil Water and Salts in Ecosystems by : A. Hadas
Download or read book Physical Aspects of Soil Water and Salts in Ecosystems written by A. Hadas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers collected in this book were given and discussed at the symposium on "Soil water physics and technology", which was held in Rehovot, Israel, from August 19th-September 4th, 1971. It was sponsored by the International Society of Soil Science (1.S.S.S.) through its Commissions I (soil physics) and VI (soil technology), and organized by the Israeli Soil Science Society. Thanks are due to the Editors for having assembled contributions and discussion remarks into a well-rounded, coherent book. The subjects covered in this book are the theoretical and practical aspects of the following topics: water movement in soils, soil-water interactions, evaporation from soil and plants, water requirements of crops, ion activity and migration in soils, soilwater management and salinity. In as much as these contributions were not solicited, they represent ideas and subjects considered important by the authors and debators. In science, one often finds a gap between basic research and practical application. If reading this book creates a feeling of an apparent lack of balance between theory and practice, this represents the state of our science today, and the thoughtful reader can and will recognize that much remains to be done. Book Synopsis Fractured Porous Media by : Pierre M. Adler
Download or read book Fractured Porous Media written by Pierre M. Adler and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2013 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a systematic treatment of the geometrical and transport properties of fractures, fracture networks, and fractured porous media. It is divided into two major parts. The first part deals with geometry of individual fractures and of fracture networks. The use of the dimensionless density rationalizes the results for the percolation threshold of the networks. It presents the crucial advantage of grouping the numerical data for various fracture shapes. The second part deals mainly with permeability under steady conditions of fractures, fracture networks, and fractured porous media. Again the results for various types of networks can be rationalized by means of the dimensionless density. A chapter is dedicated to two phase flow in fractured porous media.

Book Synopsis The Japanese and Indian Space Programmes: Two Roads Into Space by : Brian Harvey
Download or read book The Japanese and Indian Space Programmes: Two Roads Into Space written by Brian Harvey and published by . This book was released on 2000-04-26 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of the space industry in the Asian and Pacific Rim region provides the context for this book. The two major countries hoping for leadership in the area (apart from China) are Japan and India, both of whom have significant launcher capabilities. There is a general introductory chapter which places the space programmes of the region in the comparative context of the other space-faring nations of the world. The author reviews the main space programmes of Japan and India in turn, concentrating on their origins, the development of launcher and space facilities, scientific and engineering programmes, and future prospects. The book concludes with a chapter comparing how similarly/differently Japan and India are developing their space programmes, how they are likely to proceed in the future, and what impact the programmes have had in their own region and what they have contributed so far to global space research.

Book Synopsis Ecosystem Services by : R M Harrison
Download or read book Ecosystem Services written by R M Harrison and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As human populations grow, so do the resource demands imposed on ecosystems, and the impacts of anthropogenic use and abuse are becoming ever more apparent. This has led to the development of the concept of ecosystem services, which describes the beneficial functions provided by ecosystems for human society. Ecosystem services are limited and hence threatened by over-exploitation, and there is an urgent imperative to evaluate trade-offs between immediate and long-term human needs and to take action to protect biodiversity, which is a key factor in delivering ecosystem services. To help inform decision-makers, economic value is increasingly being associated with many ecosystem services and is often based on the replacement with anthropogenic alternatives. The on-going challenges of maintaining sustainable ecosystems and prescribing economic value to nature is prompting multi-disciplinary shifts in how we recognise and manage the environment. This volume brings together emerging topics in environmental science, making an excellent source for policy makers and environmental consultants working in the field or related areas. Ecosystem Services also serves as a concise and referenced primer for advanced students and researchers in environmental science and management.
