Book Synopsis Inflammation and the Microcirculation by : D. Neil Granger
Download or read book Inflammation and the Microcirculation written by D. Neil Granger and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The microcirculation is highly responsive to, and a vital participant in, the inflammatory response. All segments of the microvasculature (arterioles, capillaries, and venules) exhibit characteristic phenotypic changes during inflammation that appear to be directed toward enhancing the delivery of inflammatory cells to the injured/infected tissue, isolating the region from healthy tissue and the systemic circulation, and setting the stage for tissue repair and regeneration. The best characterized responses of the microcirculation to inflammation include impaired vasomotor function, reduced capillary perfusion, adhesion of leukocytes and platelets, activation of the coagulation cascade, and enhanced thrombosis, increased vascular permeability, and an increase in the rate of proliferation of blood and lymphatic vessels. A variety of cells that normally circulate in blood (leukocytes, platelets) or reside within the vessel wall (endothelial cells, pericytes) or in the perivascular space (mast cells, macrophages) are activated in response to inflammation. The activation products and chemical mediators released from these cells act through different well-characterized signaling pathways to induce the phenotypic changes in microvessel function that accompany inflammation. Drugs that target a specific microvascular response to inflammation, such as leukocyte-endothelial cell adhesion or angiogenesis, have shown promise in both the preclinical and clinical studies of inflammatory disease. Future research efforts in this area will likely identify new avenues for therapeutic intervention in inflammation. Table of Contents: Introduction / Historical Perspectives / Anatomical Considerations / Impaired Vasomotor Responses / Capillary Perfusion / Angiogenesis / Leukocyte-Endothelial Cell Adhesion / Platelet-Vessel Wall Interactions / Coagulation and Thrombosis / Endothelial Barrier Dysfunction / Epilogue / References

Book Synopsis Cooperation of Liver Cells in Health and Disease by : Z. Kmiec
Download or read book Cooperation of Liver Cells in Health and Disease written by Z. Kmiec and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is only during the last decade that the functions of sinusoidal endothelial cells, Kupffer cells, hepatic stellate cells, pit cells and other intrahepatic lymphocytes have been better understood. The development of methods for isolation and co-culturing various types of liver cells has established that they communicate and cooperate via secretion of various intercellular mediators. This monograph summarizes multiple data that suggest the important role of cellular cross-talk for the functions of both normal and diseased liver. Special features of the book include concise presentation of the majority of detailed data in 19 tables. Original schemes allow for the clear illustration of complicated intercellular relationships. This is the first ever presentation of the newly emerging field of liver biology, which is important for hepatic function in health and disease and opens new avenues for therapeutic interventions.

Book Synopsis Cell Kinetics of the Inflammatory Reaction by : Olav H. Iversen
Download or read book Cell Kinetics of the Inflammatory Reaction written by Olav H. Iversen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Study Group for Cell Proliferation held its XVth Meet ing at Sundvolden, Norway, in September 1987. The program included a symposium on the cell kinetics of the in flammatory reaction, with invited speakers. This volume of Current Topics in Pathology contains the manuscripts submitted by the speak ers. Inflammation is a very broad area, and the cell kinetics of the inflammatory reaction comprises a large number of topics. A full cover age would fill more than one book. This volume therefore contains only a few of the important aspects of the cell kinetics of the inflammatory reaction. It is hoped that it will serve as inspiration for further research in this important area. Inflammatory diseases are even more important than cancer, and there is a great need for a more detailed information about inflammation. OLAV HILMAR IVERSEN Contents Chapter I The Cell Kinetics of the Inflammatory Reaction. Introduction and Overview.
Book Synopsis The Inflammatory Process by : Benjamin W. Zweifach
Download or read book The Inflammatory Process written by Benjamin W. Zweifach and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 950 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Inflammatory Process focuses on the approaches, methodologies, and technologies involved in the study of the inflammatory process, including capillary structure, tissue injury, and inflammatory response. The selection first offers information on the experimental approach to inflammation, ultrastructural and biochemical consequences of cell injury, and ultrastructural basis of capillary permeability. Discussions focus on permeability of capillaries, cytoplasm, nucleus, gross pathology of inflammation, light microscope and the study of inflammation, and the physiologic approach to problems of inflammation. The text then elaborates on the microvascular aspects of tissue injury and the sticking and emigration of white blood cells in inflammation. Book Synopsis Guideline: Sugars Intake for Adults and Children by : World Health Organization
Download or read book Guideline: Sugars Intake for Adults and Children written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2015-03-31 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guideline provides updated global, evidence-informed recommendations on the intake of free sugars to reduce the risk of NCDs in adults and children, with a particular focus on the prevention and control of unhealthy weight gain and dental caries. The recommendations in this guideline can be used by policy-makers and programme managers to assess current intake levels of free sugars in their countries relative to a benchmark. They can also be used to develop measures to decrease intake of free sugars, where necessary, through a range of public health interventions. Examples of such interventions and measures that are already being implemented by countries include food and nutrition labelling, consumer education, regulation of marketing of food and non-alcoholic beverages that are high in free sugars, and fiscal policies targeting foods and beverages that are high in free sugars. This guideline should be used in conjunction with other nutrient guidelines and dietary goals, in particular those related to fats and fatty acids (including saturated fatty acids and trans-fatty acids), to guide development of effective public health nutrition policies and programmes to promote a healthy diet.

Book Synopsis Molecular Basis of Health and Disease by : Undurti N. Das
Download or read book Molecular Basis of Health and Disease written by Undurti N. Das and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-02 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes how the balance between pro- and anti-inflammatory molecules is related to health and disease. It is suggested that many diseases are initiated and their progress is influenced by inflammatory molecules and a decrease in the production and/or action of anti-inflammatory molecules and this imbalance between pro- and anti-inflammatory molecules seems to have been initiated in the perinatal period. This implies that strategies to prevent and manage various adult diseases should start in the perinatal period. An alteration in the metaolism of essential fatty acids and their anti-inflammatory molecules such as lipoxins, resolvins, protecitns, maresins and nitrolipids seems to play a major role in the pathobiology of several adult diseases. Based on these concepts, novel therapeutic approaches in the management of insulin resistance, obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome, cancer, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and other auto-immune diseases are presented. Based on all these evidences, a unified concept that several adult diseases are due to an alteration in the balance between pro- and anti-inflammatory molecules is discussed and novel methods of their management are presented.
