Book excerpt: "The 43 innovative fictions in Infinite Constellations showcase the voices and visions of 30 remarkable writers, both new and established, from the global majority: Native American/First Nation writers, South Asian writers, East Asian writers, Black American writers, Latinx writers, and Caribbean and Middle Eastern writers. These are visions both familiar and strange, but always rooted in the mystery of human relationships, the deep honoring of memory, and the rootedness to place and the centering of culture"--

Other intellectual activities may also constitute explanation - but this much certainly does. It crystallized late in the history of planetary theory. The Greeks found explanations for heavenly motions: the back ward loops were explained to their satisfaction. But they could not predict these motions, not in terms of Attic explanatory cosmologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance Constellations maps transnational protest movements and the dynamics of networked expressive behavior in the streets and online, as people struggle to be heard and effect long-term social justice. Its case studies explore collective political action in Latin America, including the Zapatistas in the mid-’90s, protests during the 2001 Argentine economic crisis, the 2011 Chilean student movement, the 2014–2015 mobilizations for the disappeared Ayotzinapa students, and the 2018 transnational reproductive rights movement. The book analyzes uses of space, time, media communication, and corporeality in protests such as virtual sit-ins, flash mobs, scarfazos, and hashtag campaigns, arguing that these protests not only challenge hegemonic power but are also socially transformative. While other studies have focused either on digital activism or on street protests, Performance Constellations shows that they are in fact integrally entwined. Zooming in on protest movements and art-activism in Mexico, Argentina, and Chile, and putting contemporary insurgent actions in dialogue with their historical precedents, the book demonstrates how, even in moments of extreme duress, social actors in Latin America have taken up public and virtual space to intervene politically and to contest dominant powers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Casual stargazers are familiar with many classical figures and asterisms composed of bright stars (e.g., Orion and the Plough), but this book reveals not just the constellations of today but those of yesteryear. The history of the human identification of constellations among the stars is explored through the stories of some influential celestial cartographers whose works determined whether new inventions survived. The history of how the modern set of 88 constellations was defined by the professional astronomy community is recounted, explaining how the constellations described in the book became permanently “extinct.” Dr. Barentine addresses why some figures were tried and discarded, and also directs observers to how those figures can still be picked out on a clear night if one knows where to look. These lost constellations are described in great detail using historical references, enabling observers to rediscover them on their own surveys of the sky. Treatment of the obsolete constellations as extant features of the night sky adds a new dimension to stargazing that merges history with the accessibility and immediacy of the night sky.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book written from a first-person perspective doesn’t automatically make it a memoir or a biography. Sometimes, it is just done to make the communication between the reader and the author a bit more intimate; also, it is easier for the author to write in the first person. The meaning of anything—be it a book, painting, movie, or life circumstances—solely sits on the one who observes it. There is never a universal key-lock combination. What is written in this book is an allegory of the life of the lead character. Maybe it is all just a dream, maybe it is the last bits of lucid thoughts that flash before the character dies, or it may be the visualizations of a brain going into a seizure. The less you think about it, the more the book will make sense. The lack of structure is intended, and it may drive some of the readers crazy, but then again, structure is subjective from person to person. Read this book as if it is a fevered dream within a fevered dream. There might be things that you could find out from the book that even the writer missed.

Book excerpt: Written for skeptics and believers alike, A Climate of Desire is an unconventional blend of the provocative ecological wisdom of the biblical writers with contemporary insights from sustainability experts and practitioners. As we enter an increasingly agitated virtual age, and what many affirm is a new period of global warming, the way ahead demands rethinking and collaboration. It also calls us to reconsider our longings and desires. Hence this book, bringing popular culture, faith, and science into dialogue. Filled with anecdotes, surprising flashbacks of history, and concrete and visionary possibilities for change, these pages will both challenge and inspire you to follow a forgotten path that's filled with hope for the decades to come. www.climateofdesire.com
