In this story-based exercise in combat leadership, Colonel John F. Antal puts you on the frontline to test your mettle against the enemy. As a U.S. Army Second Lieutenant, your light infantry battalion has been airlifted into the Middle East on short notice. Your platoon must defend Wafi Al Sirree against the superior might of an advancing enemy’s mechanized force. Your knowledge and judgment will determine your success. An error in judgment could mean defeat and death. But if you make the right choices, the day is yours. The scenario is highly realistic and is supported by maps and appendices with detailed specifications of the equipment and forces involved. The choices you must make are those that would face a rifle platoon leader in combat. You must win the respect of your troops, ensure the security of your positions, obtain intelligence of the enemy, and accomplish everything else required to survive and win in a hostile environment. Whether you’re a serving infantryman or armchair enthusiast, this is the best crash course in light infantry tactics you will find, short of a rotation through the National Training Center.

Book excerpt: This study analyzes the organization of the US Army infantry rifle squad since the end of World War II, focusing on the attempt to gain and then maintain the capability of fire and maneuver at the squad level. Since the end of World War II, the US Army has conducted or commissioned at least nine studies, aimed at determining the optimum organization of the infantry rifle squad. Common trends affect all recent attempts at transforming the US Army and become evident when studying the evolution of the squad, but the goal must remain developing a combat effective unit. Combat effectiveness is determined by applying the evaluative criteria of control, sustainability, flexibility, and lethality. By applying these four criteria to analyze various squad organizations, one can determine the strengths and weaknesses inherent to these organizations, thereby recommending the most combat effective rifle squad organization. The US Army’s current focus on strategic deployability and emerging weapons capabilities is not a new phenomenon, but potentially could cloud the essential issue, developing a military force for optimum combat effectiveness. This study concludes by recommending the optimum squad-level organization for the “Objective Force.”

Book excerpt: The paper describes the methods employed to identify and record the critical combat performances, Knowledges, and skills required of the Infantry Rifle Platoon Leader. From over 200 small-unit combat actions ranging from World War II to Vietnam, some 6,000 performances, knowledges, and skills were extracted, categorized into major subject areas, and finally recorded in 41 research by-products. The general methodology developed by this research may be applicable to the identification of the combat requirements of other military command or staff functions. The practice by major unit commanders of requiring unit historians to record detailed descriptions of small-unit combat actions will provide useful sources of data for other performance, knowledge, or skill research.

Book excerpt: Despite all technological advances, final mastery of any battlefield depends upon the tight-knit group of footsoldiers trained to manoeuvre, shoot and dig in. This first of a two-part study examines the methods by which the Western infantry of World War II - the German, British and US armies - actually brought their firepower to bear. Drawing upon period training manuals for the evolving theory, and on personal memoirs for the individual practice, this first book covers the organization and tactics of the squad of ten or a dozen men, and the platoon of three or four squads. The text is illustrated with contemporary photographs and diagrams, and with colour plates bringing to life the movement of soldiers on the battlefield.
