Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industry and Humanity: A Study in the Principles Underlying Industrial Reconstruction The existing attitude Of Capital and Labor toward each other is too largely one of mistrust born of Fear. That was the position of the nations Of Europe before the War. 'if Industry is to serve Humanity, this attitude must be changed to one of trust inspired by Faith. An industrial system characterized by antagonism, coercion, and resist ance must yield to a new order based upon mutual confidence, real justice, and constructive good-will. The change will involve patience, but nothing short of it will solve the problems to which Industry gives rise. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macphail's writing - characterized by clarity of expression and support for unpopular positions - allowed him to develop and document many of the important political, social, and intellectual themes of his time. He argued for the reorganization of the British Empire to reflect the growing importance of Canada and against such modern trends and movements as utilitarian education, feminism, industrialization, and urbanization. A strong advocate for the rejuvenation of rural life, he carried out agricultural experiments on his native Prince Edward Island. When it became apparent that it was impossible to return to rural ideals, Macphail celebrated the world of his rural past in his most memorable work - the posthumously published The Master's Wife.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid-nineteenth century, public officials, reformers, journalists, and other elites have referred to “the labour question.” The labour question was rooted in the system of wage labour that spread throughout much of Europe and its colonies and produced contending classes as industrialization unfolded. Answers to the Labour Question explores how the liberal state responded to workers’ demands that employers recognize trade unions as their legitimate representatives in their struggle for compensation and control over the workplace. Gary Mucciaroni examines five Anglophone nations – Australia, Canada, Great Britain, New Zealand, and the United States – whose differences are often overlooked in the literature on political economy, which lumps them together as liberal, “market-led” economies. Despite their many shared characteristics and common historical origins, these nations’ responses to the labour question diverged dramatically. Mucciaroni identifies the factors that explain why these nations developed such different industrial relations regimes and how the paths each nation took to the adoption of its regime reflected a different logic of institutional change. Drawing on newspaper accounts, parliamentary debates, and personal memoirs, among other sources, Answers to the Labour Question aims to understand the variety of state responses to industrial unrest and institutional change beyond the domain of industrial relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ottawa Book Award 2015 — Shortlisted Between 1918 and 1921 a great storm blew through Canada and raised the expectations of a new world in which all things would be possible.| The years after World War I were among the most tumultuous in Canadian history: a period of unremitting change, drama, and conflict. They were, in the words of Stephen Leacock, “a time such as there never was before.” The war had been a great crusade, promising a world made new. But it had cost Canada sixty thousand dead and many more wounded, and it had widened the many fault lines in a young, diverse country. In a nation struggling to define itself and its place in the world, labour, farmers, businessmen, churches, social reformers, and minorities had extravagant hopes, irrational fears, and contradictory demands. What had this sacrifice achieved? Whose hopes would be realized and whose dreams would end in disillusionment? Which changes would prove permanent and which would be transitory? A Time Such As There Never Was Before describes how this exciting period laid the foundation of the Canada we know today.
