Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing countries have undergone significant industrialization in the last three decades. Yet industrial growth reveals marked spatial inequalities in terms of both country and location. The Newly Industrialised Countries have achieved spectacular growth in sharp contrast to many other countries of the South. Industrial structure has changed, moving away from labour intensive industries to more technologically advanced manufacturing. Developing countries have had considerable success in penetrating developed country markets but they are now encountering more market restrictions. The role of the government in the development of the economy is also changing. Increasingly, countries are turning towards export-orientated industrialization strategies and privatization whilst their governments are emphasising their facilitative role.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Demographics, Urban Management, Planning, grade: 95.5, Ethiopian Civil Service University (College of Urban Development and Engineering), course: Urban Management, language: English, abstract: This study has investigated the role of industrialization for urban development specifically socio-economic development and environmental effect in Addis Ababa by using descriptive research design. Primary and secondary data were collected through multiple data gathering tools i.e. questionnaire, interview, observation and document review, and probability and non-probability sampling methods were applied. The collected data was analyzed through narration and descriptive analysis method. Bole Lemi IP has played role in achieving social development of the urban community through the provision of infrastructure and services to the previously underserved community. But the social development opportunity brought by this industrialization is unequal since communities living around the IP are still deprived of basic services and infrastructure. This is due to lack of integration between industrialization and urban development. The relocated households have been introduced with structural change in their way of life; however, they become exposed to the risk of impoverishment. Even if part of the urban community i.e. relocated households has become vulnerable to economic hardship and industrial employees remained the working poor, the IP is playing significant role for economic development. To boost the role of industrialization for holistic urban development creating strong integration between industrialization and urban development and building synergy between different government institution and their goals is a must. This is because swinging together with different feathers is not the choice that can be made it is obligatory instead.

Book excerpt: This book provides an assessment of the impacts of human intervention on the natural environment and peoples' livelihoods through land-use conversion due to industrialization. Problems of land acquisition and the execution thereof have varying consequences that depend on the specific geographical as well as socio-political contexts in which they occur. This book covers a specific study of JSW Bengal Steel Ltd., which in 2014 planned to set up a 10.0 million ton per year integrated steel plant at the upper catchment of Sundra basin, the tributary of the Shilabati that ultimately pours to the river Rupnarayan, located at Salboni Block of Paschim Medinipur, West Bengal, India. The project was ultimately put on hold, but caused many lingering environmental and socioeconomic problems due to the acquisition of formerly productive lands. The book examines this case to generate a database on the different aspects of land acquisition and its negative impacts on the geomorphology and hydrological of non-timber forest products, agricultural impacts resulting in livelihood changes, policy dimensions of land acquisition, and the impacts of delays in project implementation through a comparative analysis between projects-affected areas and non-project areas. The book will appeal to environmental managers and industry workers, as well as students and researchers in environmental economics, anthropology, and human geography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban re-industrialisation could be seen as a method of increasing business effectiveness in the context of a politically stimulated 'green economy'; it could also be seen as a nostalgic mutation of a creative-class concept, focused on 3D printing, 'boutique manufacturing' and crafts. These two notions place urban re-industrialisation within the context of the current neoliberal economic regime and urban development based on property and land speculation. Could urban re-industrialisation be a more radical idea? Could urban re-industrialization be imagined as a progressive socio-political and economic project, aimed at creating an inclusive and democratic society based on cooperation and a symbiosis that goes way beyond the current model of a neoliberal city?In January 2012, against the backdrop of the 2008 financial crisis, Krzysztof Nawratek published a text in opposition to the fantasy of a 'cappuccino city, ' arguing that the post-industrial city is a fiction, and that it should be replaced by 'Industrial City 2.0.' Industrial City 2.0 is an attempt to see a post-socialist and post-industrial city from another perspective, a kind of negative of the modernist industrial city. If, for logistical reasons and because of a concern for the health of residents, modernism tried to separate different functions from each other (mainly industry from residential areas), Industrial City 2.0 is based on the ideas of coexistence, proximity, and synergy. The essays collected here envision the possibilities (as well as the possible perils) of such a scheme.TABLE OF CONTENTS //Introduction: Urban Re-industrialization as a Political Project (Krzysztof Nawratek)PART 1: Why Should We Do It? / Re-industrialisation as Progressive Urbanism: Why and How?
