Download or read book Nobody in Charge written by Paul Swain and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over the past 116 years the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) has been involved in many industrial disputes with its workforce's principle trade union representative, the United Firefighters Union (UFU). Of particular interest were the strike of 1950 and the industrial disputation of 1995/96, when bitterness lingered for many years thereafter, significantly influencing future industrial relations. Previous research conducted into MFB/UFU industrial relations has been confined to the examination of past disputes; however, in order to not replicate research already conducted and to define a path forward, this research identifies themes for best practice in employee relations in the MFB. It does this by conducting both document analysis and interviews with MBF staff, union members and senior management from other Australasian Fire Services. From these interviews a number of critical themes were determined using the grounded theory approach and a Cresswell data analysis spiral system".--Abstract.

Download or read book Employee Relations in the Public Services written by Susan Corby and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-22 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost a fifth of all employees work in the public sector. Employees working in the civil service, NHS, local government, education, the police and fire services also represent a large and growing body of students taking degree courses at universities. Exploring this important and rapidly changing area, this book outlines the main developments in the public sector since 1979, including topical issues such as the rise of new public management, decentralisation and contracting out. Themes which currently affect public sector employees are examined, including: * decentralization * contracting out * fragmentation and the growth of individualism in the employment contract. This stimulating, up-to-date and intellectually rigorous text is thematic, rather than sector specific, and reflects the way this subject is taught in a range of courses. It will complement alternative texts in this area and will be a valuable resource for students of public policy, public sector management, human resource management, employee and industrial relations.
Book Synopsis Fire and Rescue Services by : Peter Murphy
Download or read book Fire and Rescue Services written by Peter Murphy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-10 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique text fills a major gap in the emergency services literature by surveying the research on fire and rescue service management in the UK. An extensive evidence base focuses on organizational culture, leadership skills, standards, and accountability, emphasizing the services’ dual roles as first responders and guardians of public safety and prevention. The implications for international public health and safety programs are made clear as the services’ recent history illustrates the complex challenges typical of functioning within local and national political contexts. Chapters take on a broad range of management, leadership, service delivery, and staffing concerns, including: · Evolution and adaptation of fire and rescue services during periods of expansion and austerity. · Civil protection as a local and national priority. · Structural issues: assessments and improvements, collaborations with other services. · Emerging social concerns: diversity, gender equality, the aging worker population. · The concepts and consequences of heroes and heroism. · Future directions for governance, transparency, and accountability. Fire and Rescue Services complements the earlier volumes in the Leadership & Management of Emergency Services series with equal parts realism and vision. It should interest a wide audience of public policymakers, public managers, and emergency service personnel, as well as academics and researchers.
