Management of the employment relationship changed markedly in the last two decades of the 21st century, and a major part of this has been the extension of employee involvement and participation in the workplace. Modern management theorists and researchers have commonly emphasized the importance of two-way communication and co-operation between management and labour in determining the success of human resource management (HRM) strategy and in maximizing workplace efficiency. Some researchers argue employee participation and empowerment are progressive management practices which have universal benefits to performance enhancement, as opposed to most other HRM practices whose success is contingent upon the organizational context. This title explores these themes through an international collection of case studies, which are the outcome of a comparative project of the Workers' Participation Study Group of the International Industrial Relations Association (IIRA).

Book excerpt: 'Martin Enevoldsen's book is a pioneering work that compares the impacts of various non-regulatory environmental strategies in achieving measurable pollution reductions. Much has been written on the theoretical virtues and drawbacks of green taxation versus the adoption of voluntary agreements when it comes to effective implementation of environmental goals. In convincing detail, this book makes the case for the effectiveness of environmental taxation, its barriers being primarily political in nature rather than economic. Green taxes are highly controversial even in the most environmentally conscious nations, particularly when they are regarded as a purely fiscal instrument. The successful Danish CO2 taxation on industry, which this study proves to be much more effective than the Dutch system of voluntary agreements or the Austrian laissez-faire policies, relied not only on the inducement of the CO2 tax itself; all of the tax revenue was ploughed back into industry as subsidies for investments in advanced energy saving technologies. Martin Enevoldsen's book is simply a "must" for political scientists, environmental economists and environment policymakers.' - Svend Auken, M.P. and former Danish Minister for Environment and Energy Although there is a huge demand for accurate analysis of environmental policy outcomes in both the academic and policy-making communities, there is currently very little theoretical research on this issue. This ambitious book redresses the balance by constructing a new theoretical framework at the crossroads between economics and political science to account for the effectiveness of environmental governance. Drawing on insights from new institutional economics, environmental economics, collective action theory and social capital theory, the author analyses how policy outcomes are influenced by institutional factors that constrain and empower the target groups of environmental regulation.

This study investigates the dynamics of the Europeanization of environmental policy and concludes that the domestic environmantal policies of relatively green member States are actually hardly affected. The text focuses on policy making in the field of air pollution and acidification between the (former) European Community and one Member State, the Netherlands. Included in the text is a concise history of EC environmental policy, an explanation of the theories of sovereignty, European integration and power-dependance, and final commentary on the future of environmental policy in the European Union.

Do they have the necessary internal competence? Is any support offered by external parties (i.e. network involvement)? What are the policy implications? This book is based on extensive fieldwork, conducted in four traditional industrial sectors: offset printing, electroplating, textile finishing, and industrial painting. The work was carried out in Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal and the UK. Twenty company-based case studies were analyzed and a telephone survey was conducted among 527 companies. As a result, the Innovation Triangle came to be formulated, which is presented here, defining and combining the determinants of SME innovativeness. The Innovation Triangle distinguishes three major determinants of innovativeness: business competence, environmental orientation, and network involvement. The Innovation Triangle allows one to diagnose current environmental and innovation policies, indicating which policy measures might be effective in increasing the adoption of environmentally friendly technologies, allowing environmental objectives to be achieved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: '. . . I would recommend this book to any student of international employment relations. It approaches the subject from a wide and unusual angle and is rooted, most importantly, in research.' - Len Holden, Asia Pacific Business Review Historically, alternative models of the employment relationship have developed across culturally diverse nation states. However, the trend towards globalization incorporates a powerful force towards an international uniformity of employment relations. Underlying the issues addressed in this book is the question of how important cultural differences are and will continue to be.
