Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ecce Mundus, Industrial Ideals and the Book Beautiful Such is the principle of the Ideal and as one of my contentions is that however a man may begin, or whatever may be his point of depar ture, the supreme goal is still everywhere open to him, so I will begin at the trivial circum stance which first led me to think upon the problem of the Idealisation of Associated Labour and I will step by step proceed, as I in fact have proceeded, to its attempted solu tion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Industrial Organization The ideals that man has held before him in his toilsome journey from savagery to civilization have varied with changing time and place. Among many of the older nations war was the central thought, the country was an armed camp and predatory methods were an approved means of national support. In other cases some form of religion was the predominating influence, and the social and industrial organization was modelled accordingly. In a few of the older civilizations industry was held in high esteem; but for the most part it was considered menial to labor and industry was adjudged by standards that now seem strange indeed. But as the humanistic side of civilization has made progress we have attained higher ideals regarding industry. Never before in the history of mankind has it been so universally acknowledged that physical, mental and moral well-being rest upon and are solely supported by labor. Industry is the business of the civilized world, and the greater part of our problems, national, state and home, center around the great industrial questions. Furthermore, industry is being looked upon more and more, not as an incidental matter, nor merely as a means of securing personal profits, but as the great basic feature of our civilization on which must rest our entire well-being. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Man or Machine Which?: Or an Interpretation of Ideals at Work in Industry Downed by our idealism. But What quality or fibre has our optimism When faced towards our mills and our industrial machines? We have more machines than guns, more laboring men than soldiers. We know that every calendar day our mill sites are turned over to strifes as bitter as war into battle-grounds Whereon deadly hates between man and man are as deep-nourished in gall as is any hatred between Invader and Invaded. What do we see ahead, then, for Man and The Machine? We have a night-mare at our bed's head! It is a horrible polished skeleton. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Scattered about were a number of sturdy immigrants fresh from the old country. On that day the manager was hiring Swedes. He said that the week before he had been hiring Poles, and before that he had taken on Italians. It was a good idea, he said, to get them mixed up. He told me of other large firms in that city with similar employment managers and a simi lar policy. They had an informal club that met usually once a week. One of the things of which they were proud was their plan of forecasting the labor market. If labor was getting restless they could anticipate it by a concerted raising of wages 10 per cent until the storm blew over, and then reduce the wages back again, thus counteracting the work of agitators. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industry, Emotion and Unrest This book endeavors to set forth the factors which most profoundly affect the industrial and social sides of modern economic life, and concludes with some suggestions for controlling them. The fac tors are portrayed by incidents, somewhat as is the law in the case system of instruction in law schools, thus avoiding dogmatic premises deduced from small collections of imperfectly classified facts. While the picture thus presented has been kept in harmony with economics and sociology, these sciences have been kept in the background, for they may be misleading, since economists and sociologists have not yet collected data or evolved methods as satisfactory as those of the chemists, physicists and students of the other exact sciences. I do not know that it needs any such introduction, and I remember what Mandeville has wisely and wittily said about prefaces, but I cannot refuse to do as he wishes, for I think that what he has written will be useful to the working people for whom he has written, and I am grateful to him for giving me the opportunity of saying, and desiring me to say here some things to them I have wished to say for some time. The classes that labour with their hands for weekly wages have now entrusted to them much of the power possessed by the Government of this country. The future of this country, and the parts of the world dependent on it must be largely settled by the use, wise or foolish, good or evil, they will be making of this power. Their own future depends on it. If they refuse to think, if they choose to listen to fools advice, if they do not take advantage of the opportunities they have for making themselves better, morally, physically, and intellectually, the world will pass them by speedily and inevitably. Goodwill is no excuse in face of facts; only good deeds will count. Knowledge and the will to use it, and the courage and perseverance required to use it rightly, these are the necessities of progress and of well-being of any kind. Ignorance that may be felt (but that may by honest effort be destroyed) is the cause of many more of our troubles than we like to admit. Science, not Creed, is the Deliverer, if we will only take the trouble to follow it. There will be plenty of mistakes on the way, but if a man means to learn by his former mistakes, he nearly always has the chance, and the advance, though slow, will be continuous. Democracy is no heaven-born institution. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America Vs; Europe in Industry: A Comparison of Industrial Policies and Methods of Management I wish to' acknowledge also the exceedingly intelligent assistance I received from the commercial attachés at the vari ous United States embassies, whose knowledge of the condi tions of the countries in which they are stationed is intimate and accurate. The more fully American business men avail themselves of the expert service available in this connection, the wider and more profitable will our foreign business prove. And finally, let me thank the newspapermen of Europe - men of the type of the Associated Press representatives and of the representatives of such papers as the London Times and Paris Herald - for their help, which proved invaluable. These men with their unbiased viewpoint, their high ideals and their abil ity to present facts interestingly are the promoters of under standing between the nations of the earth at a time when mutual regard, mutual trust, and mutual understanding are essential to the survival of industrial civilization. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Liberty I have sought in the following pages to deal with the subject of industrial liberty in a manner which seems to me, in some respects, different from any that I have hitherto noticed. Aiming to keep in view principles rather than statistics, I have undertaken to make an analysis of the salient political and industrial evils of our time, and to measure, by fundamental rules, the departure, in some of our governmental and industrial methods, from these principles. Where it has been necessary to employ concrete, illustrations, I have endeavored, as far as possible, to make a dispassionate and an impersonal use of them. It is not assumed that the work is anything more than elementary, since it has been my purpose rather to indicate a line of inquiry than to attempt an exhaustive or even a comprehensive treatment of the subject, and I have undertaken my task with the hope that others better equipped may possibly, from some of the suggestion which I have ventured to make, be induced to engage in a more through discussion of those underlying principles upon which modern industry, in order to be wholesome, must rest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Government All of them, of course, had features in common, but these ruling ideas stood out rather clearly as we neared the end of our journey when we could look back and compare them one with another. All of them were very alive and were making great changes in short periods, both in system and person ality. One was passing from autocracy into govern ment by employees; another from scientific manage ment into unionism; another from welfare into self government; another from political to industrial form of government. One interesting fact was found: the sudden or grad ual moral conversion of an employer from business to humanity. Employees noted it, and could not at first believe it, or were still incredulous, and told us about it, and so did the employer himself. In some cases it was unionism or strikes that did it. In others it was business foresight of the labor problem. In others it was sermons by an industrial evangelist.
