Book excerpt: Abstract: Since cattle are primarily monovular and produce only one calf per year, the cost of production for a cow-calf enterprise lies mostly in maintaining breeding stock. The overall goal in this field of research is to develop a pharmacological method to induce double ovulations in beef cattle and reduce production costs. Our objective was to study the effect of progesterone (P4) concentrations prior to emergence of a new follicular wave on the incidence of double ovulations. On d 0 of the experiment 19 cows received an intravaginal progesterone releasing device (CIDR) along with an estradiol benzoate injection to initiate follicle wave emergence approximately 3.5 d later. Prostaglandin F2[alpha] was administered on both d 0 and d 3.5 to establish a low P4 treatment (LP4, n=12) or only on d 3.5 to achieve a high P4 treatment (HP4, n=7). The CIDR were removed on d 3.5. Blood samples were collected from all animals throughout the experiment to measure circulating P4 concentrations. Ovarian structures were monitored via transrectal ultrasonography and ovulation was induced with gonadotropin releasing hormone when the largest follicle measured>= 12 mm in diameter. A new wave of follicles was observed in 17 cows and the mean day of follicle wave emergence did not differ between treatments (d 3.7 " 0.2). Concentrations of P4 in the HP4 treatment were approximately 125% greater than in the LP4 treatment from d 1 through d 3.5. All animals ovulated a single follicle with the exception of one animal in each treatment that ovulated two follicles. The mean follicle diameter at ovulation (11.9 " 0.3 mm) and mean interval to ovulation (5.7 " 0.1 d) did not differ between treatments. We conclude that P4 concentrations preceding the emergence of a new follicle wave did not influence the incidence of double ovulations.

Experiment 1 was conducted with the aim of identifying endocrine and/or follicular characteristics that led to development of double ovulations when this approach was taken. The hypothesis in the first experiment was that the decrease in progesterone as a result of luteal regression would induce enhanced or prolonged FSH which, in turn, would increase the occurrence of double ovulations. In the first experiment, 26 beef cows were synchronized to a common day of estrus and all follicles >̲ 5 mm in diameter were aspirated approximately 7 days later (d 0 of the experiment). Luteal regression was induced on d 1.5 and 2 of the experiment, concurrent with new follicle wave emergence, in half of the animals (PG; n = 13). The other 13 females were designated as controls and received no further treatment. Blood samples were collected from all animals during the course of the experiment to measure concentrations of FSH, LH, estradiol, and progesterone. Transrectal ultrasonography was conducted once daily to evaluate all ovarian structures. Double ovulations occurred in 5/12 (42%) animals in the PG treatment. Concentrations of FSH in serum were similar between the PG and Control treatments. Within the PG treatment, FSH did not differ between groups of animals that double ovulated (PG-DO) and single ovulated (PG-SO). Concentrations of LH were greater in PG-DO compared to PG-SO over the course of the experiment (group; P 0.05). Heifers received PGF on either d 6 or 7, and the CIDR insert was removed on d 7. Heifers were inseminated and received GnRH 48 h after CIDR removal. Pregnancy rates to FTAI were higher for heifers treated with GnRH. Pregnancy rate to FTAI was highest for heifers in the GnRH group that received PGF on d 6 and was lowest for the group that received ECP in combination with a 7-d CIDR insert. In the second experiment, heifers received GnRH in conjunction with the CIDR insert. CIDR inserts were removed and PGF was administered on d 7. Heifers were inseminated 60 h later, with one group receiving GnRH at insemination. Pregnancy rate to FTAI was higher for heifers that received GnRHat insemination. The final experiment tested the efficacy of estradiol 17 _(E17) or GnRH in combination with a CIDR insert on pregnancy rate to FTAI in Brahman cows. Either E17 or GnRH was administered in conjunction with the CIDR insert. CIDR inserts were removed on d 7. Cows in the GnRH group received PGF on d 6 and GnRH at insemination which occurred 48 h after CIDR removal. Cows in the E17 group received PGF on d 7, E17 24 h later, and were inseminated 30h after E17 administration. Pregnancy rate to FTAI was higher for cows treated with E17. These data indicate acceptable pregnancy rates were obtained when the CIDR insert was combined with either GnRH in beef heifers or with E17 in Brahman cows.

Book excerpt: Ovarian steroids assist in the development of the follicle and its enclosed oocyte as well as prepare the maternal environment for pregnancy. The objective of experiment 1 was to elucidate the differences between dominant follicles of each follicular wave in terms of intra-follicular concentration of steroids after 4 d of dominance. Differences in blood perfusion between the dominant follicle of the first and second non-ovulatory wave were also examined. Follicular waves were monitored daily via ultrasonography from emergence to aspiration of the dominant follicle. It was determined that although the dominant follicles aspirated from ovulatory waves possessed a greater concentration of estradiol and a greater ratio of estradiol to progesterone, there was no difference in concentrations of steroid hormones or the ratio of estradiol to progesterone between dominant follicles collected from non-ovulatory waves and ovulatory waves. In a subset of cows, blood perfusion tended to be greater in dominant follicles that developed during the second non-ovulatory wave. The objective of experiment 2 was to determine whether or not the follicular wave had an effect on diameter of the ovulatory follicle, thickness of the endometrium, or subsequent pregnancy rates. Estrus was synchronized in females in such a way that females would ovulate the dominant follicle of the first or second follicular wave at timed artificial insemination. Diameter of the ovulatory follicle and endometrial thickness were not different between treatments; however, increased pregnancy rates were observed in heifers that ovulated the dominant follicle of the second follicular wave. There was no effect of follicular wave on pregnancy rates in cows. In conclusion, the role of follicular wave on the dominant follicle, maternal environment, and subsequent pregnancy rates is not fully understood. Additional experiments need to be conducted to further elucidate the differences in developmental potential of the oocyte and maternal environment when the dominant follicle of the first and second wave are destined to become the ovulatory follicle at timed insemination.

A series of experiments were designed to evaluate the effects of estradiol and progesterone on gonadotrophin release, follicular wave emergence and ovulation in beef cattle. In ovariectomized cows, a new CIDR-B device increased plasma progesterone to near-luteal concentrations, but for only 2 to 3 days. Injection of 100 mg progesterone increased plasma progesterone approximately 2 ng/mL. Progesterone suppressed plasma LH concentrations but did not affect plasma FSH concentrations. Estradiol, with or without progesterone, resulted in FSH suppression with resurgence (and follicular wave emergence) at an interval that varied according to the estradiol formulation. Estradiol administration following CIDR-B removal resulted in LH release (and ovulation in intact animals). Both estradiol-17Î2 and estradiol benzoate (EB) synchronized ovarian follicular wave emergence in CIDR-Bï¿ư-treated animals and the interval from CIDR-B removal to ovulation (72 to 120 h) was shorter and more synchronous in estradiol-treated animals than in controls. In cattle given a CIDR-B device and estradiol plus progesterone, estradiol treatment following CIDR-B removal 7 days later resulted in acceptable conception rates to fixed-time AI. Estradiol or GnRH at the beginning and end of a 7-day MGA-based synchronization regimen resulted in acceptable pregnancy rates to fixed-time AI. In a single experiment, EB, GnRH or pLH in CIDR-B- or MGA-treated beef heifers effectively synchronized ovulation for fixed-time AI. Pregnancy rates were, on average, 58.0% (range 52.5 to 65.0%). A 6- or 7-d interval from GnRH to PGF in a Cosynch regimen resulted in similar pregnancy rates in cows. The addition of a progestin to a Cosynch or Ovsynch regimen improved pregnancy rates in heifers but not in cows. His work also involves studying methane conversion and emission factors for Indian livestock and use of IPCC methodology of methane inventory of Indian livestock. Heat shock protein-70 expression studies in cattle and buffaloes are also done in his lab. Draught animal power evaluation, fatigue assessment, work-rest cycle and work limiting factors form the highlights of his work. Studies on partitioning of heat loss from skin and pulmonary system of cattle and buffaloes and electrocardiographic studies in cattle, buffalo, sheep and goat are also undertaken in his lab. He has more than 75 research papers, four books and several book chapters to his credit. Technologies developed and research done by him include methodology of methane measurement: open and closed circuit for cattle and buffaloes; inventory of methane emission from livestock using IPCC methodology; livestock stress index: thermal stress measurement based on physiological functions; and draught power evaluation system and large animal treadmill system. He received training in Radio-nuclides in medicine at Australian School of Nuclear Technology, Lucas heights, NSW, Australia in 1985 and Use of radioisotopes in cardiovascular investigations at CSIRO, Prospect, NSW, Australia, during 1985-86. He has guided several post-graduate and PhD students. He is recipient of Hari Om Ashram Award-1990 (ICAR) for outstanding research in animal sciences.

Book excerpt: Using Science to Improve the BLM Wild Horse and Burro Program: A Way Forward reviews the science that underpins the Bureau of Land Management's oversight of free-ranging horses and burros on federal public lands in the western United States, concluding that constructive changes could be implemented. The Wild Horse and Burro Program has not used scientifically rigorous methods to estimate the population sizes of horses and burros, to model the effects of management actions on the animals, or to assess the availability and use of forage on rangelands. Evidence suggests that horse populations are growing by 15 to 20 percent each year, a level that is unsustainable for maintaining healthy horse populations as well as healthy ecosystems. Promising fertility-control methods are available to help limit this population growth, however. In addition, science-based methods exist for improving population estimates, predicting the effects of management practices in order to maintain genetically diverse, healthy populations, and estimating the productivity of rangelands. Greater transparency in how science-based methods are used to inform management decisions may help increase public confidence in the Wild Horse and Burro Program.
