Book Synopsis Conservation and Painting Techniques of Wall Paintings on the Ancient Silk Road by : Shigeo Aoki
Download or read book Conservation and Painting Techniques of Wall Paintings on the Ancient Silk Road written by Shigeo Aoki and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-13 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents recent research on ancient Silk Road wall paintings, providing an up-to-date analysis of their coloring materials and techniques, and of developments in efforts to preserve them. The destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas in 2001 encouraged international collaboration between conservation research institutes to study and protect the Silk Road’s painted heritage. The collaborations led to exciting new discoveries of the rich materials used in wall painting, including diverse pigments and colorants, and various types of organic binding media. In addition, comparative research across the region revealed shared painting practices that indicate the sophisticated exchange of technologies and ideas. In parallel with these advances in technical understanding, greater awareness and sensitivity has been fostered in endeavors to preserve this fragile heritage. The book offers insights obtained from conservation projects and ongoing research, that encompass the geographical regions and periods related to the Silk Road, including from Japan, China, Korea, India and Afghanistan, and countries of the Eastern Mediterranean region. It also discusses the current issues and future challenges in the field. Featuring concise chapters, the book is a valuable resource for students and professionals in the field of cultural heritage preservation, as well as those who are not familiar with the fascinating topic of Silk Road wall painting research.

Book excerpt: The archaeological site of Ajanta in the Indian state of Maharashtra is made up of five temples and twenty-four Buddhist monasteries, hewn in the rock wall of the Waghora river valley. Their construction dates back to about 200 BC and the shrines were a focus of spirituality for centuries. Then, around 650 AD they were abandoned and gradually forgotten, until they were rediscovered by a British tiger-hunting expedition in 1819. Today, the Ajanta complex is a UNESCO world heritage site and, with its treasure of paintings and sculptures, is considered an exceptional repertory of the origins and evolution of classical Indian art.

Book Synopsis Ajanta: History and Development by : Walter Spink
Download or read book Ajanta: History and Development written by Walter Spink and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-11-12 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twenty-nine Buddhist caves near Ajanta form a devotional complex which ranks as one of the world's most startling achievements, created at the very apogee of India's Golden Age. "Ajanta: History and Development," appears as part of the series Handbook of Oriental Studies, present the reader with a systematic treatment of all aspects of the site, the result of forty years of painstaking research "in situ" by Walter M. Spink. Volume one deals with the historical context in which this dramatic burst of pious activity took place under the reign of Vakataka emperor Harisena, (c. 460 - 477 A.D.), and with the sudden halt of activity almost immediately following the death of the emperor. In surprising detail the relative and absolute chronology of the site can be established from a careful reading of the physical evidence, with consequences for our dating of India's Golden Age. Ajanta, it appears, is a veritable illustrated history of Harisena's times, crowded with information on its history, development and how it was used.
Book Synopsis Cave Temples of Dunhuang by : Neville Agnew
Download or read book Cave Temples of Dunhuang written by Neville Agnew and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2016-05-07 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mogao grottoes in northwestern China, located near the town of Dunhuang on the fabled Silk Road, constitute one of the world’s most significant sites of Buddhist art. Preserved in some five hundred caves carved into rock cliffs at the edge of the Gobi Desert are one thousand years of exquisite wall paintings and sculpture. Founded by Buddhist monks in the late fourth century, Mogao grew into an artistic and spiritual center whose renown extended from the Chinese capital to the far western kingdoms of the Silk Road. Among its treasures are 45,000 square meters of murals, more than 2,000 statues, and over 40,000 medieval silk paintings and illustrated manuscripts. This sumptuous catalogue accompanies an exhibition of the same name, which will run from May 7 through September 4, 2016, at the Getty Center. Organized by the Getty Conservation Institute, Getty Research Institute, Dunhuang Academy, and Dunhuang Foundation, the exhibition celebrates a decades-long collaboration between the GCI and the Dunhuang Academy to conserve this UNESCO World Heritage Site. It presents, for the first time in North America, a collection of objects from the so-called Library Cave, including illustrated sutras, prayer books, and other exquisite treasures, as well as three full-scale, handpainted replica caves. This volume includes essays by leading scholars, an illustrated portfolio on the replica caves, and comprehensive entries on all objects in the exhibition.
