However, there have been a number of discoveries and advances that have increased our understanding of the mechanisms of NIHL. A survey of the existing auditory-space perception literature suggests that three main types of factors may account for this variability: - physical factors, e.g., acoustical characteristics related to sound-localization cues, - perceptual factors, e.g., sensory/cognitive processing, perceptual learning, multisensory interactions, - and methodological factors, e.g., differences in stimulus presentation methods across studies. However, the extent to which these–and perhaps other, still unidentified—factors actually contribute to the observed variability in spatial hearing across individuals with normal hearing or within special populations (e.g., hearing-impaired listeners) remains largely unknown. Likewise, the role of perceptual learning and multisensory interactions in the emergence of a multimodal but unified representation of “auditory space,” is still an active topic of research. A better characterization and understanding of the determinants of inter-individual variability in spatial hearing, and of its relationship with perceptual learning and multisensory interactions, would have numerous benefits. In particular, it would enhance the design of rehabilitative devices and of human-machine interfaces involving auditory, or multimodal space perception, such as virtual auditory/multimodal displays in aeronautics, or navigational aids for the visually impaired. For this Research Topic, we have considered manuscripts that: - present new methods, or review existing methods, for the study of inter-individual differences; - present new data (or review existing) data, concerning acoustical features relevant for explaining inter-individual differences in sound-localization performance; - present new (or review existing) psychophysical or neurophysiological findings concerning spatial hearing and/or auditory perceptual learning, and/or multisensory interactions in humans (normal or impaired, young or older listeners) or other species; - discuss the influence of inter-individual differences on the design and use of assistive listening devices (rehabilitation) or human-machine interfaces involving spatial hearing or multimodal perception of space (ergonomy).

A major reason for this is that historically, most perceptual research focused on the more basic processes involved in the detection and discrimination of simple stimuli. This work progressed in a connectionist fashion, attempting to clarify fundamental mechanisms in depth before addressing the more complex problems of pattern recognition and classification. This extensive and impressive research effort built a firm basis from which to speculate about these issues. What seemed lacking, however, was an overall characterization of the recognition problem – a broad theoretical structure to direct future research in this area. Consequently, our primary objective in this volume, originally published in 1981, was not only to review existing contributions to our understanding of classification and recognition, but to project fruitful areas and directions for future research as well. The book covers four areas: complex visual patterns; complex auditory patterns; multi-dimensional perceptual spaces; theoretical pattern recognition.

One reason for such difficulty may be a decreased ability to process the rapid changes in intensity, frequency, or temporal information that serve to differentiate speech sounds. Two important cues for the identification of stop consonants are the duration of the interruption of airflow (i.e., closure duration) and rapid spectral changes following the release of closure. Many researchers have shown that age and hearing loss affect a listener's cue weighting strategies and trading relationship between spectral and temporal cues. The study of trading relationships between speech cues enables researchers to investigate how much various listeners rely on different speech cues. Different cue weighting strategies and trading relationships have been demonstrated for individuals with hearing loss, compared to listeners with normal hearing. These differences have been attributed to the decreased ability of the individuals with hearing loss to process spectral information. While it is established that processing of temporal information deteriorates with age, it is not known whether the speech processing difficulties of older listeners are due solely to the effects of hearing loss or to separate age-related effects as well. The present study addresses this question by comparing the performance on a series of psychoacoustic and speech identification tasks of three groups of listeners (young with normal-hearing, older with normal-hearing, and older with impaired hearing) using synthetic word pairs ("slit" and "split"), in which spectral and temporal cues are altered systematically. Results of the present study suggest different cue weighting strategies and trading relationships for all three groups of listeners, with older listeners with hearing loss showing the least effect of spectral cue changes and young listeners with normal hearing showing the greatest effect of spectral cue changes. Results are consistent with previous studies showing that older listeners with and without hearing loss seem to weight spectral information less heavily than young listeners with normal hearing. Each listener group showed a different pattern of cue weighting strategies when spectral and temporal cues varied.
