This method was based on the use of reference test pieces to compare the energy provided by a reference machine with that of test (or industrial) machines. These principles are outlined in French standard NFA 03-508 and France had a national source of unnotched, reference test pieces. The manufacture of reference test pieces, characterization of calibrated batches and the indirect verification of industrial machinery therefore have been practised for twelve years or so.

Book excerpt: Indirect verification tests used to verify the performance of Charpy impact machines according to ASTM Standard E23 were evaluated by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and the data from these tests are collected in a database. The data include the capacity and the pendulum design of the impact machine, the energy obtained for each specimen tested, the reference energy for the specimen lot tested, and the test date. The principal use of this data is to track the performance of individual impact machines. However, the data also provide an opportunity to evaluate existing and proposed requirements for the indirect verification of Charpy impact machines. The results of more than 16 000 verification tests are used to compare the current verification requirements of ASTM Standard E23 with those of ISO Standard 148-2. Discussions focus on the identification of reasonable, practical, and meaningful verification requirements that might be proposed for use in both documents.

A preliminary study, made with an experimental batch, has shown that these test pieces are equivalent to the BCR test pieces. This trial production allowed us to define the manufacturing and calibration conditions for the industrial production of Charpy V reference test pieces. Three levels of impact energy are available. The main features of this production are presented.

In order to overcame the need of an instrumented impact tester an instrumented specimen has been prepared, together with its electronic system for impact tester compliance measurement. The compliance measurement, after verification of the impact tester with direct and indirect methods, as per ASTM E 23 or ISO R 442, can be helpful for verification of the good working condition of the pendulum and for the detection of onset of anomalies.
