However, all the works pursue the same objective: to know and interpret nature from different points of view, either through knowledge of nature in situ or the use of technology and mapping using satellite images. Chapters analyze the ecological parameters that affect vegetation, the species that make up plant communities, and the influence of humans on vegetation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was in late 2002 that the idea of preparing a collection of multi-authored chapters on different aspects of ag- st forestry as a compendium for the 1 World Congress of Agroforestry, June 2004, was tossed around. With the approval of the idea by the Congress Organizing Committee, serious efforts to make it a reality got under way in early 2003. The rigorously peer-reviewed and edited manuscripts were submitted to the publisher in December 2003. Considering the many differentindividualsinvolved in the task as authors and manuscriptreviewers, we feel quite pleased that the task could be accomplished within this timeframe. We are pleased also about the contents on several counts. First of all, the tropical-temperate mix of topics is a rare feature of a publication of this nature. In spite of the scienti?c commonalities between tropical and temperate practices of agroforestry, the differences between them are so enormous that it is often impossible to mesh them together in one publication. Secondly, several of the chapters are on topics that have not been discussed or described much in agroforestryliterature. A third feature is that some of the authors, though well known in their own disciplinary areas, are somewhat new to agroforestry; the perceptions and outlooks of these scholars who are relatively unin?uenced by the past happenings in agroforestry gives a whole new dimension to agroforestry and broadensthescopeofthesubject. Finally, ratherthanjustreviewingandsummarizingpastwork, mostchapterstake the extra effort in attempting to outline the next steps.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A topical collection of essays on common property and resources in Zimbabwe in the light of new challenges posed by globalisation. These challenges are identified as inequitable access to resources, increasing poverty, the degradation of the environment, the supranational efforts to acquire so-called 'global resources' and the concurrent global drive towards democratisation and good governance. The first part presents an overview of local participation in wildlife, fisheries, water, minerals, forestry and land enterprises, setting out common property rights and exploring the empowerment of communal farmers in Zimbabwe. It discusses local experiences; and the realities of the effects of liberalisation in the light of conventional globalist perspectives; and considers in particular water reform. The second part of the book covers the management of trans-boundary natural resources in Zimbabwe and the SADC region; and the impact of global developments on the region. It discusses present international frameworks within which common property resources must be managed; and reflects on the future for common property in Zimbabwe.

Book excerpt: This first edition of the Africa Environment Outlook (AEO) report is a significant milestone in the collaboration between UNEP and the African Ministerial Conference on the Enviornment (AMCEN). Africa faces a number of critical challenges, including the deterioration of the environment; increasing social and economic inequality; and worldwide globalization, which is leaving Africa behind. The AEO is a unique tool. It provides an analysis of the state of the environment over the past 30 years, looks at the driving force behind environmental change, and reviews the consequences for social and economic development. It concludes with recommendations about the road that Africa should take to preserve its great natural riches, biodiversity and vast unspoiled landscapes.
