Book excerpt: Sustainable consumption and production (SCP) was adopted as a priority area during the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002 and has since become one of the main vehicles for targeting international sustainability policy. The EU-funded project "Sustainable Consumption Research Exchanges" (SCORE!) consists of around 200 experts in the field of sustainable innovation and sustainable consumption. The SCORE! philosophy is that innovation in SCP policy can be achieved only if experts that understand business development, (sustainable) solution design, consumer behaviour and system innovation policy work together in shaping it. Sustainable technology design can be effective only if business can profitably make the products and consumers are attracted to them. To understand how this might effectively happen, the expertise of systems thinkers must be added to the mix. System Innovation for Sustainability 1 is the first result of a unique positive confrontation between experts from all four communities. It examines what SCP is and what it could be, provides a state-of-the-art review on the governance of change in SCP policy and looks at the strengths and weaknesses of current approaches. The SCORE! experts are working with actors in industry, consumer groups and eco-labelling organisations in the key consumption areas of mobility, food and agriculture, and energy use and housing – responsible for 70% of the life-cycle environmental impacts of Western societies – with the aim of stimulating, fostering or forcing change to SCP theory in practice. The System Innovation for Sustainability series will continue with three further volumes of comprehensive case studies in each of these three critical consumption areas. Book excerpt: In Europe, a decrease in the availability of phosphate rock resources for fertiliser production coincides with an increase in phosphorus-rich dairy wastewater. These drivers have led to the development of emerging technologies for phosphorus recovery from dairy wastewater with the purpose of generating products that can be used as fertilisers in agriculture. New technologies need to be assessed using relevant performance indicators. To identify such indicators, considering the proposed innovative technology in environmental and institutional contexts is necessary. In this study, we developed an approach for identifying and selecting sustainability indicators; the approach was used to derive a list of sustainability indicators specific to the context. Based on a search of relevant literature and interviews with experts, three different tools were developed: a screening framework, a questionnaire for finding actor priorities, and a list of indicator selection criteria. These tools were used to narrow down an initial set of 382 sustainability indicators identified in the literature to 26 that were considered representative and useful for the assessment of the considered innovative conceptual system. The environmental indicators target specifically systems that focus on phosphorus recovery, wastewater and sludge treatment, or agricultural activities, while the techno-economic and social indicators are useful in a broader context, but particularly in early stages of technology development. The new approach proposed herein that makes use of a screening framework was found to be particularly useful in guiding the selection process; the framework can be easily adapted to different contexts.

The traditional approach is based on the assumption that the goal of any business is to make money. All decisions regarding supply and production should be made to maximize profit. The discrepancy in creating non-economic value is sometimes the result of separating ownership from control over an enterprise. Although shareholders are interested in maximizing profit, management that actually makes decisions can also pursue other goals. In addition to economic aspects, the management intentions of modern managers are also influenced by factors arising from the organizational culture built, co-created within the organization and sometimes with the participation of external actors such as suppliers and customers. The sources of the creation of social values will be the management intentions of top management, often initiated by the adopted values and rules on the basis of which resources are bound within the structure of the business model. The value of sustainability is based on the identification of those creative sources that relate to economic and social value. Economic value is created through social value and vice versa. This allows the complementarity of the value created to be mutually supportive. The business model that integrates both of these values should be more resistant to crises than the one that is oriented only toward producing economic value. Concurrent implementation of economic and social goals increases resilience and affects the success of modern business models. This is due to the specificity of the business ecosystem that is built as part of the business model, which, in essence, is based on the use of social factors to merge the business model into a complex ecosystem capable of producing value.
