Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Great Indian Problem and a Suggested Solution What is the Indian Problem? It has two aspects. (1) In Great Britain it appears to be a spirit of "unrest" and "discontent." Now and again, one sees in the London and Provincial newspapers, the ugly words "Sedition in India." (2) In India, the problem is one that daily presses upon the millions of its people, the problem of making two ends meet; of the food supplies for the ever growing population, and wherewithal to buy the needs of life? Where there is smoke, there is fire, and there is a cause for "unrest" and "discontent," but it is Economical and not Political. A great solution lies, in my opinion, as I will attempt to show in this pamphlet, in the development of the produce of land, and in freeing the cultivator from the harassment and hardship of the present system of cash fixed payment, according to a periodical or any kind of assessment. Before proceeding to outline my scheme in somewhat greater detail, I will here just say that from the knowledge of my own countrymen, I firmly believe that a revision of the Government of India's Land Revenue Policy in some accordance with my proposed solution of the problem will speedily lead to a development of land produce which will tend to alleviate, if not terminate, the "unrest" and "discontent," the evidences of dissatisfaction with the outward conditions of life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian and His Problem The foregoing statement will, I trust, excuse the somewhat frequent reference found in these pages to matters which fell to me to handle officially. Of any departures from my methods which may have been made or are likely hereafter to be made by any suc cessor in office, I cannot speak with the same authority. On the other hand, as the solution of our problem has been progressive, and as it had just entered a critical stage when I was called to take charge of it, any ex tended discussion now of questions which were settled before that time would be a little like treating ancient history as a current topic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reflections on the Problems of India You will remember on a certain occasion when Boswell was indulging in one of his heroics, Johnson turned round and said, My dear friend, clear your mind of cant. I believe at the present moment no sounder advice could be given to the Educated Classes in India than in those memorable words of the bluff old Doctor, and my efforts in the following pages are solely or mainly directed towards assisting my Countrymen in clearing their minds of cant. One thing I wish you to bear in mind is that I do not pretend to solve the Problems of India as most other writers have attempted to do before me; I only venture to give my reflections on them, or rather, the thoughts that have crossed my mind while reading all the wit and wisdom that the leaders of Indian thought have so lavished upon them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Policy and Westward Expansion The time during which these problems had to be solved added to the difficulty of the solution. During the earlier part of the period considered, the question of slavery and sectional rivalry had not become so acute and at that time had little influence on the situation. However, by the time of the annexation of Texas and the settlement of the Oregon question, sectional rivalry had become one of the dominant factors in any consideration of measures relating to west ward expansion and even threatened to make impossible any solution of these problems. These difficulties could not but be reflected in the formulation and execution of Indian policy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. They had gone through the ceremony of adoption, and they had surrendered their right to their four children and given them (mr. And Mrs. Gandhi) the charge. He did not know that they were worthy to take charge of those children. He could only assure them that they would try to do their best. The four boys had been his pupils when he had been conducting a school for Passive Resisters at Tolstoy Farm, and later on at Phoenix. Then when Mrs. Naidoo had sought imprisonment, the boys had been taken over to Johannesburg, and he thought that he had lost those four pearls, but the pearls had returned to him. He only hoped that Mrs. Gandhi and he would be able to take charge of the precious gift. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The Paribhasendusekhara by Nagesa is the most widely studied text in the field of grammatical Paribhasas. Numerous commentaries have been written on it including one by Nagesa`s Pupil, Vaidyanatha Payagunda. In addition an excellent english translation was published more than a century ago by one of the most outstanding scholars of sanskrit grammar, Franz Kielhorn. Yet the protion dealing with the Bahiranga Paribhasa the most important Paribhasa and the one most extensively discussed by Nagesa has according to Bronkhorst been misunderstood by commentators and translator alike.
