The substance of the symposium consisted of 24 invited talks delivered by as many speakers. Each speaker was asked to prepare and submit a brief abstract of his talk, rather than the text of the talk itself, and these 24 abstracts are herewith presented as a special issue of the Indiana University Mathematics Journal. Book Synopsis Women in Mathematics by : Claudia Henrion
Download or read book Women in Mathematics written by Claudia Henrion and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 1997-10-22 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "... a wonderful addition to any mathematics teacher's professional bookshelf." -- The Mathematics Teacher "The individual biographies themselves make for enthralling, often inspiring, reading... this volume should be compelling reading for women mathematics students and professionals. A fine addition to the literature on women in science... Highly recommended." -- Choice "... it makes an important contribution to scholarship on the interrelations of gender, mathematics, and culture in the U.S. in the second half of the twentieth century." -- Notices of the AMS "Who is the audience for this book? Certainly women who are interested in studying mathematics and women already in mathematics who have become discouraged will find much to interest and help them. Faculty who teach such women would put it to good use. But it would be a loss to relegate the book to a shelf for occasional reference to an interested student or beginning mathematician. Everyone in the mathematics community in which each of Henrion's subjects struggled so hard to find a place could benefit by a thoughtful reading." -- Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) News Mathematics is often described as the purest of the sciences, the least tainted by subjective or cultural influences. Theoretically, the only requirement for a life of mathematics is mathematical ability. And yet we see very few women mathematicians. Why? Based upon a series of ten intensive interviews with prominent women mathematicians throughout the United States, this book investigates the role of gender in the complex relationship between mathematician, the mathematical community, and mathematics itself.
Book Synopsis Collected Papers by : Robert J. Aumann
Download or read book Collected Papers written by Robert J. Aumann and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Aumann's career in game theory has spanned over research - from his doctoral dissertation in 1956 to papers as recent as January 1995. Threaded through all of Aumann's work (symbolized in his thesis on knots) is the study of relationships between different ideas, between different phenomena, and between ideas and phenomena. When you look closely at one scientific idea, writes Aumann, you find it hitched to all others. It is these hitches that I have tried to study.

Book Synopsis H-infinity Engineering and Amplifier Optimization by : Jefferey C. Allen
Download or read book H-infinity Engineering and Amplifier Optimization written by Jefferey C. Allen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: H-infinity engineering continues to establish itself as a discipline of applied mathematics. As such, this extensively illustrated monograph makes a significant application of H-infinity theory to electronic amplifier design, demonstrating how recent developments in H-infinity engineering equip amplifier designers with new tools and avenues for research. The presentation, at the interface of applied mathematics and engineering, emphasizes how to (1) compute the best possible performance available from any matching circuits; (2) benchmark existing matching solutions; and (3) generalize results to multiple amplifiers. As the monograph develops, many research directions are pointed out for both disciplines. The physical meaning of a mathematical problem is made explicit for the mathematician, while circuit problems are presented in the H-infinity framework for the engineer. A final chapter organizes these research topics into a collection of open problems ranging from electrical engineering, numerical implementations, and generalizations to H-infinity theory.

Book Synopsis Notes on the Brown-Douglas-Fillmore Theorem by : Sameer Chavan
Download or read book Notes on the Brown-Douglas-Fillmore Theorem written by Sameer Chavan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-10-07 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suitable for both postgraduate students and researchers in the field of operator theory, this book is an excellent resource providing the complete proof of the Brown-Douglas-Fillmore theorem. The book starts with a rapid introduction to the standard preparatory material in basic operator theory taught at the first year graduate level course. To quickly get to the main points of the proof of the theorem, several topics that aid in the understanding of the proof are included in the appendices. These topics serve the purpose of providing familiarity with a large variety of tools used in the proof and adds to the flexibility of reading them independently.
Book Synopsis Scientific Journals: Issues in Library Selection and Management by : Tony Stankus
Download or read book Scientific Journals: Issues in Library Selection and Management written by Tony Stankus and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1987, brings together from a variety of sources analysis on the major issues involved in the collection of scientific journals. Working from the premise that scientists tend to know much more about their subject than about their journals, it examines the rationale for journal choices, journals and tenure, journals and budgeting, and the elements of a good journal. It shows librarians how to penetrate the internal structure of some imposing technical literatures in a way that can help them make responsible collection management decisions that even their science clientele will respect.
Book Synopsis Guide to Information Sources in Mathematics and Statistics by : Martha A. Tucker
Download or read book Guide to Information Sources in Mathematics and Statistics written by Martha A. Tucker and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2004-09-30 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a reference for librarians, mathematicians, and statisticians involved in college and research level mathematics and statistics in the 21st century. We are in a time of transition in scholarly communications in mathematics, practices which have changed little for a hundred years are giving way to new modes of accessing information. Where journals, books, indexes and catalogs were once the physical representation of a good mathematics library, shelves have given way to computers, and users are often accessing information from remote places. Part I is a historical survey of the past 15 years tracking this huge transition in scholarly communications in mathematics. Part II of the book is the bibliography of resources recommended to support the disciplines of mathematics and statistics. These are grouped by type of material. Publication dates range from the 1800's onwards. Hundreds of electronic resources-some online, both dynamic and static, some in fixed media, are listed among the paper resources. Amazingly a majority of listed electronic resources are free.
