Book Synopsis Mourning Dove Recoveries from Mexico by : Lytle Houston Blankenship
Download or read book Mourning Dove Recoveries from Mexico written by Lytle Houston Blankenship and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of 37,000 reports of mourning dove band recoveries in the files of the Migratory Bird Populations Station on October 30, 1967, 1,120 came from Mexico, and half of those were from Jalisco and Michoacan, both in west-central Mexico; Jalisco alone accounted for nearly a third. Few recoveries were reported from the area between the U.S. border and mid-Mexico. Generally, lower proportions of total recoveries were reported from Mexico under the current pre-hunting season banding program for flying birds than were reported from the nestling dove banding program of the 1950's. Bandings in the northern U.S. States produced proportionally more recoveries than bandings in the southern U.S. States. Doves banded over diverse areas of the United States were harvested in common migration with wintering areas in Mexico. Possible explanations of the heterogeneous distribution of recoveries throughout Mexico are discussed. Of the banded birds for which "how obtained" was known, 83.5 percent were reported as shot (or killed) and only 3.2 percent reported as captured or trapped. Among 658 persons who gave their name and residence when they reported bands, 95.7 percent had typically Spanish surnames and were residents of Mexico. Depending upon actual banding reporting rates and the representativeness of the banding data analyzed, the Mexican dove harvest may equal or exceed harvests in leading U.S. States. Factors influencing band reporting rates must be resolved before Mexico's importance as a harvest area can be accurately determined.
Book Synopsis To See Every Bird on Earth by : Dan Koeppel
Download or read book To See Every Bird on Earth written by Dan Koeppel and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2006-04-25 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What drives a man to travel to sixty countries and spend a fortune to count birds? And what if that man is your father? Richard Koeppel’s obsession began at age twelve, in Queens, New York, when he first spotted a Brown Thrasher, and jotted the sighting in a notebook. Several decades, one failed marriage, and two sons later, he set out to see every bird on earth, becoming a member of a subculture of competitive bird watchers worldwide all pursuing the same goal. Over twenty-five years, he collected over seven thousand species, becoming one of about ten people ever to do so. To See Every Bird on Earth explores the thrill of this chase, a crusade at the expense of all else—for the sake of making a check in a notebook. A riveting glimpse into a fascinating subculture, the book traces the love, loss, and reconnection between a father and son, and explains why birds are so critical to the human search for our place in the world. “Marvelous. I loved just about everything about this book.”—Simon Winchester, author of The Professor and the Madman “A lovingly told story . . . helps you understand what moves humans to seek escape in seemingly strange other worlds.”—Stefan Fatsis, author of Word Freak “Everyone has his or her addiction, and birdwatching is the drug of choice for the father of author Dan Koeppel, who writes affectionately but honestly about his father’s obsession.”—Audubon Magazine (editor’s choice) “As a glimpse into human behavior and family relationships, To See Every Bird on Earth is a rarity: a book about birding that nonbirders will find just as rewarding.”—Chicago Tribune

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Dr. Josey and Ms. DeLoach wrote in their Introduction to the second editionof The Handbook of Black Librarianship: “In designing the second edition of The Handbook of Black Librarianship, the editors felt that this work should be a reference tool related to the various aspects of African Americans in librarianship and their work in libraries.” That first edition covered issues faced by black library professionals in the various fields of librarianship; organizations formed; black library collections and books; resources and other areas of progress. The second edition, published twenty-three years later, highlighted more current events in Black librarianship: early and contemporary library organizations, vital issues, African American resources, discussions on and about librarianship, a focus on health librarianship, and information resources and education. It has now been another twenty-two years since the last edition and time to reflect on “various aspects of African Americans” in our profession as well as the advancements over the past two and a half decades and to review those issues African Americans still face and how modern technological advancements have impacted our profession and the lives of Black librarians. This third edition’s coverage includes: Pioneers and Landmark Episodes A Chronology of Events in Black Librarianship African American Forerunners in Librarianship Modern Day Black Library Organizations Vital Issues in Black Librarianship Library Service to Our Communities Library Technology and Black Librarianship Pearls from Our Retirees Issues in Diversity, Inclusion and Multiculturalism African Library Resources and Education Banned Books Significant Books and Periodicals for Black Collections
