Nature lovers, photographers, tourists continue to flock to the National Parks, hoping to see tigers in Ranthambor, lions in the Gir forests, and rare birds in Bharatpur. But smugglers and poachers, supported by politicians and business interests, sheltered by local communities, raid the protected forests for valuable exports. This tract traces the roots of such problems to the very ideology of conservation in India, and discusses its historical and conceptual basis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr M.K. Ranjitsinh has had an unparalleled role in India's wildlife conservation history. He was the prime architect of the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972 and of the Central government schemes to assist national parks and sanctuaries. His passion for saving endangered species continues after his retirement, whether in planning the relocation of the Asiatic lion from Gir forest, the reintroduction of the cheetah into the grasslands of central India, or in saving from extinction the Kashmir stag, the Manipur brow-antlered deer and the Great Indian bustard.A Life with Wildlife traces the course of wildlife from the princely and British era to the present and shows how wildlife conservation efforts in India have always emanated from the upper echelons of power. The book reveals the challenges of conservation in a democracy like India, and how to counteract them. There is also a candid, never-revealed-before account of the Bhopal gas tragedy from someone who played a pivotal role in its aftermath. This delightful first-hand narrative is in its essence the history of nature conservation in India, by a person who was part of it and contributed to it, during its most tumultuous period.

Download or read book Portrait of Wildindia written by Anant Zanjale and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-21 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was in 1984 that I visited the Kanha forest with a group of friends. It was love at first sight in my case, and what started off as a casual visit soon turned into a lifelong affair. As the years passed by, I explored many other jungles too. Every new place came with a new set of friends. Along with them, my acquaintance with the animals and their habitat began growing. During the initial phase, I did my photography with a video camera, but around 1996, I came across the book Sunlight and Shadows by M. Y. Ghorpade. Literally overnight I switched over to a still camera. Although I met him much later in my life, I made him my guru there and then. His photograph Tusker in the Rain, taken when photography was a difficult pursuit, still captivates me. Even in this age, I find it difficult enough doing wildlife photography using digital equipment. I can only imagine the hard work that he must have put in with his medium-format camera using black-and-white film.
