Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Highways of America, Vol. 2: Indian Thoroughfares The brave missionaries in Canada called the Indian trails of the North "Roads of Iron" because they were so difficult to follow. Holland, writing of the famous Bay Path in Massachusetts, gave them the name "Threads of Soil." They were all that these names imply and much more. They opened a new continent to its explorers, conquerors, and pioneers. This monograph purposes to show the routes of the more important Indian thoroughfares of America, to suggest the importance of study of them, to prove that the courses can be identified and followed today, and to induce readers whom this subject may attract to do some work along these lines. To one who is imaginative the old days will come back: the trail and forest are again peopled, border armies hurry by, and the long stream of immigration floods the land. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian This volume might be called one of recollections, for in it have been set down many memories of Indian life. The scenes described I have witnessed with my own eyes; the stories related are those which have been told me by the Indians themselves. These stories are introduced freely because the con crete example conveys a clearer idea of an event than an abstract statement, and because the story of the Indian should not be told wholly from the point of view of a race alien in thought, feeling, and culture. No narrative about any people can do them justice if written by one who is not in some degree in sympathy with them, and acquainted with their ways of thought and with the motives which govern them. Before an intelligent account of it can be given, the stranger race must be comprehended. Long association with Indi ans enables a white man ultimately to share their thought and feelings; and he who has reached this point understands the Indian. He understands that the red man is a savage and has savage qualities, yet he sees also that the most impressive characteristic of the Indian is his humanity. For in his Simplicity, his vanity, his sensitiveness to ridicule, his desire for re venge, and his fear of the supernatural, he is a child and acts like one. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Transport Road At sunrise, our native transport-riders began to inspan, at least a couple of hours too late. Then they went across for coffee with the concertina-player, and, after that, the driver of our wagon remembered that he was short of tobacco, and made a tour round the outspan, endeavouring to borrow some. Meanwhile, the unfortunate cattle, hungry, thirsty - they had had no water for over twenty four hours - weary, even before they had started to plough through the eleven miles of heavy sand ahead of them, stood with heads hanging down, as though the mere weight of the yokes was too much for them, appar ently too listless even to try and flick Off the loathsome flies which swarmed round them in thousands. The sun was well above the trees when we finally trekked away from that unwholesome spot. Within the first half mile, every one of our wagons had stuck in the sand, and had had to be hooked out by the other spans; and, raw though we were, we had already dis covered that, not only were the cattle leg - weary and hungry, but their lack of training made them practically valueless at the moment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Days on the Road: Crossing the Plains in 1865 I do not expect to gain fame or fortune by the publication of this little book. I have prepared it for publication, because a number of the pioneers who read my journal twenty years ago, when published in The Husbandman, have asked me to. At that time I was a busy wife, mother and housekeeper, and could only write when my baby boy was taking his daily nap, to supply the copy for each week. No one knows better than I how very imperfect it was, yet many seemed to enjoy it, and the press that noticed it at all spoke very kindly of it. Book excerpt: The treatment of American Indians is discussed historically with reference to the 4 principal methods used to create or perpetuate false impressions: obliteration, defamation, disembodiment, and disparagement. Indian contributions to American civilization are cited in contrast with historical references to Indians in textbooks. The author suggests specific reading materials for various age levels which reflect accurately the cultural contributions of the Indian. A bibliography on the American Indian influence on American civilization is appended. (Jh).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Big Brother: A Story of Indian War All these things combined to bring on the war, and during the Spring several raids were made by small bodies of the Indians, in which they were pretty severely punished by the whites. Finally a battle was fought at Burnt-corn, in July 1813, and this was the Signal for the breaking out of the most terrible of all Indian wars, - the most terrible, be cause the savages engaged in it had learned from the whites how to fight, and because many of their chiefs were educated half-breeds, familiar with the country and with all the points of weakness on the part of the settlers. Stockade forts were built in various places, and in these the settlers took refuge, leaving their fields to grow as they might and their houses to be plundered and burned whenever the Indians should choose to visit them. The stock ades were so built as to enclose several acres each, and strong block houses inside, furnished additional protection. Into these forts there came men, women, and children, from all parts of the country. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
