Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian outward foreign direct investment (FDI) has risen dramatically in recent years. This reflects that Indian multinational corporations (MNCs) are asserting an increasingly important role in the global economy, not only as resource and market seekers in less developed countries, but increasingly competing on par with western MNCs in their home markets. When we confront the Indian outward FDI path with theories of outward foreign direct investment from developing countries, a number of puzzles and anomalies becomes evident: Normally, we would expect strong inward FDI performance to precede strong outward FDI performance, however in India the rise in outward FDI has been almost simultaneous with the rise in inward FDI; Normally, we would expect developing country MNCs to invest in like or less developed countries, however Indian MNCs have in a rapid sequence moved into developed economies; Normally, we would expect developing country MNCs to be operating with less advanced technologies and business models, however Indian MNCs have moved directly into FDI in advanced sectors and technologies. This paper will offer a number of explanations for the unique Indian outward investment path, explanations that take their point of departure in the idiosyncratic nature of Indian industrialization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the role economic freedom plays in attracting Indian outward foreign direct investment to various countries. Investments by Indian multinationals to various continents are studied along with aggregate investment outflows. Results show that Indian outward FDI do appear to prefer economically free economies. Government size, ease of foreign trade, and market regulations are the aspects of economic freedom Indian investors appear to cherish, while legal structure does not seem to influence the volume of investments by Indian multinationals.

Book excerpt: India has been continually attracting massive foreign investments since the opening up of its economy with a series of liberalization policies in the early 1990s. This inward FDI plays an important role in the Indian economy as a financier of her BOP. However in recent years, India has been fast emerging as an exporter of large foreign direct investment. An increasing number of Indian firms are resorting to outward investment in order to access new technologies, skills and managerial expertise etc. from the developed countries. This is a bit of an anomaly. What explains this boom in FDI from India? What have been the motivations to invest abroad? What could be its economic implications? These are the questions that generally come into mind. A large number of strategic factors and motivations along with a series of policies liberalization and financial deregulation those are undertaken since the early 1990s are supposed to be the driving forces for this outflow of FDI from India. The present article tries to address some of these issues.

Book excerpt: Foreign Direct Investments (FDI), as generally understood, is related to capital flows, from developed countries to the developing countries. When the flow is from developing countries to advanced economies, the phenomenon is called outward FDI or Reverse FDI. This paper identifies an additional capital flow that flows from developing countries in the form of Intellectual Capital, which also ensures returns to the developing nation. This paper attempts to present a different angle to what should Foreign Direct Investment also include, especially from the developing countries to rest of the world. This phenomenon is also known as Outward FDI or Reverse FDI. The specific reference in this paper is with respect to India. The investment pattern from India, follows the same pattern as the contribution done inside the country, by different sectors of the economy to the Gross Domestic Product. The main recipient of Indian FDI has been developed countries like the United States of America, Canada, Australia and also developing countries like Taiwan, Thailand and Philippines in both manufacturing and IT areas. India is very well known for its intellectual capital and its systematic attempts to improve the same is an acknowledged fact. This paper advocates that this form of capital, which is the accumulation of culture and the literacy, should be taken into account while accounting for outward FDI from India. The Indian outward FDI has a long history starting from the early 19th century though the measurable phenomenon, has happened and been commented upon, from the 1960's onwards. As we go ahead in the new millennium, it is felt that this form of outward FDI will only rejuvenate India and make economic development, a progressive and tangible reality. The method of approach is essentially descriptive and the interpretation is based on qualitative analysis.

Book Synopsis Puzzles and Truths About Indian Outward FDI by : Victor Zitian Chen
Download or read book Puzzles and Truths About Indian Outward FDI written by Victor Zitian Chen and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of new global contender MNEs from large emerging markets (EMs) is leading to significant structural transformation of global industries, international institutions, and global power (re)arrangement. Outward FDI undertaken by these EM multinational enterprises (MNEs) is growing fast as they are on a buying spree of assets and companies abroad. The share of EMs in global FDI outflows increased to 19% in 2008 and further to 25% in 2009 (UNCTAD, 2010). Among relatively large EMs, India's annual compound growth of 176% during 2000-2008 had been unprecedented, ahead of its counterparts such as China (165%), Brazil (123%), and Russia (151%), although from a relatively lower base (UNCTAD, 2010). India's outward FDI position is much more active than its comparator economy China, which received about $500 billion in inward FDI before its firms began to substantially invest abroad and maintained its inward FDI five times its outward FDI as late as 2007 - substantial inward FDI and outward FDI of India started almost at the same time and India's total outward FDI (e.g., $25 billion in 2007) is almost as large as total inward FDI (e.g., $17 billion in 2007) (Ramamurti, 2010). These noticeable, interesting observations have triggered a few major special issues and book volumes focusing on Indian MNEs, notably Transnational Corporations Review (Vol. 3, No. 2), Pradhan (2008), and Sauvant and Pradhan (2010). This article takes steps further and examines two myths and potential explanations about Indian outward FDI that lead us to set up a more relevant and nuanced research agenda on EM MNEs.
Book Synopsis Rise of Service Sector Outward Foreign Direct Investment from Indian Economy by : Jaya Prakash Pradhan
Download or read book Rise of Service Sector Outward Foreign Direct Investment from Indian Economy written by Jaya Prakash Pradhan and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of service sector outward FDI (OFDI) activities has emerged as one of the most important aspects of Indian economy during nineties. The present paper reviews the recent trends and patterns and tries to identify determinants of such investment. As compared to the eighties, the character of service sector OFDI flows has gone through several transformations. In the seventies it is largely a phenomenon led by firms from hotels & restaurants, finance and marketing segments and is being directed at developing regions in overwhelming cases and is mostly minority owned. In contrast, during nineties it is predominantly led by the software segment of the service sector, locationally developed country oriented and is largely majority-owned ventures. The rising trends in the service sector Investment Development Path (IDP) of Indian economy has been found to be related to the stylized aspect of economic growth expressed in terms of structural shift in economic activities. At the firm level the OFDI behavior of service sector firms is observed to be non-linearly related to the firm age and size, both relationships following inverted U-shape curves. Firm's innovation, export orientation and profitability are also found to be important explanators in the rise of OFDI at the firm level. The import of capital goods however appears to have a negative impact on trans-border expansion of service sector firms.
