Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural and environmental resources are productive assets in a nation's economy and the basis of a country's economic activity. Economic activity, in turn, affects the quantity and quality of a country's natural and environmental resources. Mining, lumbering, manufacturing, fishing, and a host of other economic activities change the stock of natural resources, which calls for appropriate trade-off between the needs of the present and future generations. However, environmental pollution is one of the major problems faced by the world community, especially in cities of the developing countries which have experienced an unbridled growth of population, urbanization, and industrialization. In India - the second most populous and seventh largest country in the world - environmental problems can be classified into two broad categories: (a) those arising from conditions of poverty and under-development, and (b) those arising as negative effects of the very process of development. This volume of research papers - authored by experts in the field of environmental economics - provides deep insights into the linkages between development and the environment in India. The book suggests remedial measures for environmentally sustainable economic policies in the country. [Subject: India Studies, Economics, Environmental Studies, Development Studies]Ã?Â?Ã?Â?

Book excerpt: Nonrenewable natural resources – metallic and non-metallic minerals, industrial rocks and energy resources (both organic and inorganic), have been treated in a holistic manner in this book, including two important resources (soil and water), not commonly covered in most books on this topic. For the uninitiated reader, an introductory chapter looks into some basic definitions as well as nature and characteristics of mineral deposits followed by a chapter on the different crustal processes that produce the various ore deposits in the endogenous and exogenous environments. The strength of the book lies in its critical treatment of the genetic processes of the mineral deposits, their classification and the geodynamic context of metallogeny, and coverage of sustainable development of mineral deposits with special reference to various socio-economic as well as regulatory and environmental issues that face the Indian mining industry today. The text is punctuated with examples of Indian deposits, balanced with classical deposits around the world, to cater to the interests of Indian students and the international readership. This is a book for advanced undergraduate and post-graduate students of Geology, Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian income from oil and gas in fiscal year 1974 amounted to about $43.1 million. Indian income from other minerals, including a large amount from coal, amounted to about $9.6 million during the same period. There are opportunities to improve development of mineral resources, increase the economic benefits to the Indian people, and provide the Nation with increased energy sources. Such development can provide needed jobs and income to Indians living on or near reservations, a group with a high rate of unemployment. The Bureau of Indian Affiars has placed limited emphasis on developing Indian coal, oil, and gas resources. Thirteen of the 16 Indian coal leases had fixed royalty rates and, therefore, the income per ton produced did not rise during periods of rising coal prices. The Geological Survey has not adequately fulfilled its responsibilities for mineral resource development on Indian reservations.

Though the studies focus mostly on cases in India, the volume discusses how governance can be employed to help develop and implement sustainable practices globally through the lens of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework. Readers will learn how to integrate concepts of resource management, sustainable development, and governance to improve human resilience to global environmental change, and to assess the proper development approaches to assist economically stressed and resource-deprived individuals. The book will be of use to graduate students and academics, policy makers, planners, and nonprofits.
