They are memories of such lives as anglo-indians live year in, year out, of the varied homes they make for themselves in the land of exile where their motto most truly is, Uz' mg'gmlzzms eaez'ta. My father and grandfather were in the Indian Civil Service before me, and one of my sons is now a member of that Service. I was myself in the Civil Service for thirty-five years. My life in India was not devoid of incident; I have had the honour to rise to high office, and for four years after my retirement I sat as a Member of the House of Commons. I have made many friends, and, I am sorry to say, not a few enemies. In these pages, which are an unvarnished record, I submit my memoirs to the judgment of the public, and venture to hope that they may add to the number of my friends and not increase the ranks of those who are enrolled upon the other side. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sunny Memories of an Indian Winter Much has been written about India, and by some masters Of their craft, but the field is vast and the land one Of many phases. Much remains yet to be written; and probably no two pair Of eyes will View it with the same Vision. As for the following pages, they claim but to be some records Of one Of the sunniest seasons Of the writer's life, and are reminiscent Of that Indian winter, the retrospect Of which is writ large and in letters Of gold on the tablets Of her memory. In a country where an atmosphere Of beauty, natural and artistic, is all-pervading. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of Rugby and India These memories of Rugby and the East India College, and of fifty-five years spent in the public service, were recalled in quiet hours of home life or in conversations with intimate friends. It was at my request that my husband began to write them down for a younger generation to read. He did not live to complete them, but he left a certain amount of notes and material which had accumulated during his active life, and from this I have compiled a few concluding chapters, fully conscious of their shortcomings. My thanks are due to the Dowager Countess of Lytton, the Dowager Lady Napier and Ettrick, Lady Rose Weigall, Mrs. Arthur Arbuthnot, Mrs. H. O. Arnold-Forster, Mrs. Story-Maskelyne, and Miss Feilden for permission to include passages from letters and to reproduce portraits, also to Sir Edward Bradford and Sir Charles Lawson for friendly encouragement and advice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of India: Recollections of Soldiering, and Sport Erhaps the only redeeming point about these Memories is that they are largely ex tracted from diaries and letters which were not written with the idea of anyone ever seeing them except my mother. To some extent they tell directly against me, since they show me to have been just the ordinary silly young ass who enjoyed sense less ragging, was fond of dogs and horses, and thought very little as he went through the ordinary every-day experiences of a subaltern in India. There is nothing very romantic or very exciting about them, and there is much that is Silly, but at the same time such things have, I think, seldom been set down in writing just as they occurred to one at the time. They may at any rate serve to remind other old officers besides myself that they themselves once felt and did as subalterns now think and do. As we get into our crabbed old age, we are apt to forget that we were once youngsters, as I had almost forgotten that I once enjoyed having all my face except a small patch on the left side scraped bare in a glorious rough and tumble. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient Tamil poetic corpus of the Caṅam ("The Academy") is a national treasure for Tamilians and a battle-ground for linguists and historians of politics, culture and literature. Going back to oral predecessors probably dating back to the beginning of the first millennium, it has had an extremely rich and variegated history. Collected into anthologies and endowed with literary theories and voluminous commentaries, it became the centre-piece of the Tamil literary canon, associated with the royal court of the Pandya dynasty in Madurai. Its decline began in the late middle ages, and by the late 17th century it had fallen into near oblivion, before being rediscovered at the beginning of the print era. The present study traces the complex historical process of its transmission over some 2000 years, using and documenting a wide range of sources, in particular surviving manuscripts, the early prints, the commentaries of the literary and grammatical traditions and a vast range of later literature that creates a web of inter-textual references and quotations.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Indian The books which are to appear in this series are intended to present peculiar and characteristic phases of earlier development in that portion of our country which lies beyond the Missouri River. The specialization of American history has found expression in numerous studies of the colonial life of New England, New York, and Virginia, indeed, all the Eastern seaboard, and in discussions of explorations westward like those of the Spaniards to the south and the French to the north, and of migrations away from the seaboard, like the movement across the Blue Ridge to Kentucky, and the various patriarchal journeyings which began the settlement of Ohio and the middle West. The final occupation of the real West has come about almost in our own time. The first white male child born in Kansas is an honoured resident of the State to-day, and Kansas is venerable in comparison with States and Territories beyond. Speaking roughly, the Missouri divides sections very dissimilar in certain characteristics of their evolution. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian This volume might be called one of recollections, for in it have been set down many memories of Indian life. The scenes described I have witnessed with my own eyes; the stories related are those which have been told me by the Indians themselves. These stories are introduced freely because the con crete example conveys a clearer idea of an event than an abstract statement, and because the story of the Indian should not be told wholly from the point of view of a race alien in thought, feeling, and culture. No narrative about any people can do them justice if written by one who is not in some degree in sympathy with them, and acquainted with their ways of thought and with the motives which govern them. Before an intelligent account of it can be given, the stranger race must be comprehended. Long association with Indi ans enables a white man ultimately to share their thought and feelings; and he who has reached this point understands the Indian. He understands that the red man is a savage and has savage qualities, yet he sees also that the most impressive characteristic of the Indian is his humanity. For in his Simplicity, his vanity, his sensitiveness to ridicule, his desire for re venge, and his fear of the supernatural, he is a child and acts like one. The reflection applies to this book, which contains glimpses of men and things of former days in Madras, that were obtained by delving in the archives of the British Museum and the India Office. The papers appeared originally in the Madras M ail, and have now been recast and enlarged. They are illustrated by examples of the methods of photo-engraving invented by Sir Joseph.
