Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Indian Literature The obtaining of critical data from the contents of Indian literature, with a view to the establishment of its internal chronology and history - not the setting forth in detail of the subject-matter of the different works - was, from the beginning, the object I had before me in these lectures; and this object, together with that of specifying the publi cations which have seen the light in the interval, has con tinned to be my leading point of view in the present annotation of them. To mark off the new matter, square brackets are used.1' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient India: Its Language and Religions The little band of workers who are busy in the workshops of this department of science, have not been accustomed to have the eyes of other men turned upon their doings - their successes and failures. But, in spite, nay, rather in consequence of this, it is right that an attempt should be made to invite even the most disinterested to an inspection of these places of industry, and to point out, piece by piece, the work, or at least part of the work, that has been done there. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Indian Literature WE may be allowed to congratulate ourselves that we live at a time when the long-drawn conflict of man to win a mastery over Nature seems to be on the turning-point towards victory. The time may, in a sense, he still called the age of steam, though it is passing into the age of the forces that will conquer steam. But the crash of machinery, even the clang of the tram-car or the whiz of the on-coming motor, need not deaden our perception of other sounds, that make perhaps less noise in the world, but are none the less a token of the presence of forces more potent and more enduring than even the conquerors of steam. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Buddhist Art in India The first edition of Professor Albert Grunwedel's handbook on Buddhistische Kunst in Indien appeared in 1893, and the hope was expressed in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society that the work might appear in English, as "it ought to be in the hands of all antiquarians in India." Believing that so important a publication might, by a few additions, form a useful general guide to the Buddhist sculptures in the museums alike of India and Europe, I have prepared the present edition. Miss A. C. Gibson very kindly translated for me the first edition; but by the time it was ready for the press, Prof. Grunwedel had begun his second edition containing extensive additions and alterations. This involved delay and a revision of the whole MS. Considerable additions have also been made to this translation, which have, partly at least, been indicated, and about fifty illustrations are added. The difficulties in interpreting the Gandhara Buddhist sculptures arise chiefly from their fragmentary and unconnected condition. This has been lamentably increased by the ignorance or disregard of scientific methods on the part of the excavators of these remains. Monasteries and stupas were dug into and demolished without regard to what might be learnt in the process by modern methods; the more complete fragments only were saved, without note of their relative positions or any attempt to recover smaller portions and chips by which they might have been pieced together; and the spoils were sent to various museums, often without mention of the sites from which they emanated. Cerebrals and nasals are unmarked, as the omission will not confuse any one acquainted with Eastern languages, and my experience, after many years teaching of Sanskrit, Tamil, and Telugu, is that it is impossible for any one unfamiliar with the sound of the languages as spoken in India to acquire even an approximate pronunciation of these letters. I regret that it is impossible for me fully to acknow ledge my indebtedness to the many works I have consulted. To the delegates of the Clarendon Press I am especially indebted for permission to quote from the Series of the Sacred Books of the East - a monumental undertaking full of evidence of the scholarship, untiring industry and wide sympathies in all matters connected with the East of Professor The Right Honourable F. Max Muller. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ideals of Indian Art Indian Art has now obtained a far wider te cognition and a fuller understanding than it had when the first edition of Ideals of Indian Art was published. If it has not yet become a sub ject Of general interest for the public, it is now treated more or less respectfully by our national museums: several able Indian writers have made valuable contributions to it, and European art critics, who before avoided it Or gave it scant consideration, have become its appreciative ex ponents. I have not, however, foimd it necessary to revise the passages in this book which relate to Opinions current at the time-when it was first published, as my readers can easily mark the differences between then and now for them selves. Except for a few necessary corrections and additional notes the text remains unaltered. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Quest of India The writers of this series of volumes on the variant forms of religious life in India are governed in their work by two impelling motives. I. They endeavour to work in the sincere and sympathetic spirit of science. They desire to understand the perplexingly involved developments of thought and life in India and dis passionately to estimate their value. They recognize the futility of any such attempt to understand and evaluate, unless it is grounded in a thorough historical study of the phenomena investigated. In recognizing this fact they do no more than share what is common ground among all' modern students of religion of any repute. But they also believe that it is neces sary to set the practical side of each system in living relation to the beliefs and the literature, and that, in this regard, the close and direct contact which they have each had with Indian religious life ought to prove a source of valuable light. For, until a clear understanding has been gained of the practical influence exerted by the habits of worship, by the practice of the ascetic, devotional, or occult discipline, by the social organization and by the family system, the real impact of the faith upon the life of the individual and the community cannot be estimated and, without the advantage of extended personal intercourse, a trustworthy account of the religious experience of a community can scarcely be achieved by even the most careful student. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Life of India: The Chamars The purpose of this series of small volumes on the leading forms which religious life has taken in India is to produce really reliable information for the use of all who are seeking the welfare of India. Both editors and writers desire to work in the spirit of the best modern science, looking only for the truth. But, while doing so and seeking to bring to the interpretation of the systems under review such imagination and sympathy as characterize the best study in the domain of religion to-day, they believe they are able to shed on their work fresh light drawn from the close religious intercourse which they have each had with the people who live by the faiths herein described and their study of the relevant literature has in every instance been largely supplemented by persistent question ing of those likely to be able to give information. In each case the religion described is brought into relation with Christianity. It is believed that all' readers in India at least. These lectures constitute an exceedingly valuable description of the social, political, educational, and religious conditions of India. They contain precisely what the American wants to know about India. Delivered, as they were, by a native of India, they are not colored by foreign prejudices. I am impressed, by what I heard of the lectures, with the fact that in the hurry and bustle of our Western civilization we have a great deal to learn from the East.
