This book was released on 2009 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portuguese Encounters with Sri Lanka and the Maldives: Translated Texts from the Age of the Discoveries is designed to provide access to translations of 16th- and 17th-century documents which illustrate various aspects of this encounter, combining texts from indigenous sources with those from the Portuguese histories and archives. These documents contribute to the growing understanding that different groups of European colonizers - missionaries, traders and soldiers - had conflicting motivations and objectives. Scholars have also begun to emphasize that the colonized were not mere victims but had their own agendas and that they occasionally successfully manipulated colonial powers. The texts in this volume help to substantiate these assertions while also illustrating the changing nature of the interactions.
Download or read book Maritime Boundary written by S. P. Jagota and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 1985-07-08 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the fundamental changes which occurred in the political structure of Europe, & improved East--West relations in general, the Arctic has increasingly become the focal point of international attention during the last few years. Scientific research & environmental protection are areas which have already witnessed some form of international cooperation in the area. With this particular evolution in mind, a new look at the legal regime of navigation in the Arctic seems to be justified. While several other countries border on the Arctic, Canada & Russia have the most extensive shorelines & have shown keen interest in ensuring that their proper share of this area is not encroached by other countries. This book is thus generally restricted to an examination of the maritime boundaries that these states are claiming, & the extent to which other states have recognized them. It also explores the need for greater international cooperation in this area, not only between the two main contenders but also with other countries that have shown a special interest in Arctic navigation & in the exploitation of resources of this area.

Book Synopsis India Rising by : Johannes Plagemann
Download or read book India Rising written by Johannes Plagemann and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-17 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India Rising unpacks the country’s approach to global governance by systematically considering three potential factors—ideas, interests, and institutions—that have an impact on India’s foreign policy making. The editors and contributors of this volume examine possible explanations for India’s varying compliance with global regimes and its contributions to the development and change of those regimes in areas such as nuclear non-proliferation, maritime security, counter-terrorism, cyber-governance, democracy promotion, climate change, and trade policy. The book also discusses how India is globally perceived in differing ways: as a hub of diplomatic interaction and as a difficult negotiator with a frequently inflexible stance. Looking at the prime ministerial years of Manmohan Singh and Narendra Modi’s first term, it examines India’s often ambivalent approach to global governance and foreign policy making in the backdrop of its image as a rising global power. It thus seeks to answer the primary question: What drives rising India’s conduct on the world stage?
Book Synopsis India-Sri Lanka Partnership in the 21st Century by : A. Subramanyam Raju
Download or read book India-Sri Lanka Partnership in the 21st Century written by A. Subramanyam Raju and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India and Sri Lanka are geographically contiguous and culturally close. The island state of Sri Lanka is barely thirty kilometers away from India's southern coastal tip. People of these two countries share many similarities in terms of dress, food habits, manners, customs and ways of life. In spite India Sharing border with all its neighbouring countries in South Asia, its relationship with Sri Lanka has been relatively more cordial than with other countries in the region. In addition to their cordial relationship, there is minusderstanding and mistrust between the two resulted in many ups and down in their mutual relationship. The issue of Tamils of Indian origin and maritime issues between the two countries created turbulence. The civil war of 1983 further aggravated the situation. Half of India's investment in South Asian region is invested in Sri Lanka and as such the island state has emerged as a close economic partner of India. Both the countries realize that restrictions on trade between the two are detrimental to their economic growth and prosperity. There is a greater potential for enhancing and institutionalizing bilaterl economic cooperation in the exploration and exploitation of sea resources in the Indian Ocean waters. Neither country can ignore the security of the other. Sri Lanka cannot ignore the problems of Tamil Nadu when it talks about its relationship with India. Similarly India cannot ignore the internal problems of Sri Lanka when it seeks to improve its relations with the later. The volume probes into various mechanisms and strategies with a view to shaping better for both the countries. The papers provide a perspective in debating the emerging issues of greater concern to India and Sri Lanka in the dynamic world of the 21st Century. There are eighteen papers, divided into six sectios.

Download or read book Teardrop Diplomacy written by Asanga Abeyagoonasekera and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-02-18 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sri Lanka, the teardrop-shaped island in the Indian Ocean, is facing its worst political–economic crisis since independence. This book is a compilation of essays on several themes which trace the nation's recent journey, from the rise of the Rajapaksa regime in 2019 to the present crisis in 2022. The essays explain how the nation moved from a democratic country to a full-scale autocratic, militarized nation. The US–India–China triangulation and its impact on Sri Lanka are also captured in this book, bringing a unique Sri Lankan perspective. Teardrop Diplomacy will give the reader a better understanding of the underlying political and social distress in everyday life in Sri Lanka and what brought the fragile state to this political and economic disaster within a short period of three years. This is a lesson for many developing nations, especially those under debt-distress in the post-pandemic environment.
