Book Synopsis Technology, Adaptation, and Exports by : Vandana Chandra
Download or read book Technology, Adaptation, and Exports written by Vandana Chandra and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature on technological change and growth has mainly used econometric models to establish that factors such as the degree of openness, skills, research and development expenditures, number of patents etc. are critical determinants of innovation and its effect on growth. However, this approach fails to explain the role of institutions and policies that created the environment for innovation. Using 10 case studies from developing countries, this book examines how governments fostered technological adaptation through public-private partnerships to develop world-class exporters in high-growth, non-traditional industries.
Book Synopsis The Rise of the Indian Software Industry by : Markus Kutscha

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: 67% (Upper second class), University of Westminster (University of Westminster (London)), course: International Trade & Finance, language: English, abstract: Today India is the second most populous country in the world, with about 1.04 billion people. Two-thirds of India’s population work in the agricultural sector and account for around 25% of GDP. The Indian indicator of human development is one of the lowest in the world, and a large fraction of the population still lives below the poverty line. Nevertheless, due to India’s liberalising reform programme and the rising economic de-velopment, the number of poor people will decline to 220.1 million by 2007 according to the Planning Commission. The World Bank estimates that India will become the fourth largest economy in the world by 2020. While increasing pressures on domestic industry will have to cope with competition from imports, liberalisation of trade will open up new opportunities for ex-port of goods. India’s service sector has already become the dominant contributor to GDP, accounting for 46 per cent of the total. NASSCOM, the Indian industry’s lobby, has stated that the country’s exports from software, other IT services and business-process-outsourcing in-dustries grew by more than 25% to $12 billion last year, of which infrastructure services accounted for just over $300m. The global market for textiles, clothing and agricultural products will expand dramati-cally, but India’s ability to export will depend on its capacity to keep pace with rising international standards of price, quality productivity and service.
Book Synopsis The Development of the Software Industry in Postreform India by : Rajendra Kumar
Download or read book The Development of the Software Industry in Postreform India written by Rajendra Kumar and published by Cambria Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the success stories of economic development through hi-tech industries, the emergence of India as a major center in the world for software production and exports stands out. This is a fascinating story of economic development in a poor and technologically underdeveloped economy that surged to prominence within a relatively short period of less than two decades. The industry has sustained annual growth rates in excess of 35% for over 15 years since the early 1990s, when the country embarked upon an ambitious economic reforms program. However, within the country, the growth of this industry has been highly uneven, with the southern and the western regions leading the rest of the country. This trend has drawn attention to the role of regional policies in the development of this industry. Investigating these issues in depth will help us understand how the state can play a role in propelling an economy forward. The book also compares the different ways in which three states in southern India have established their software industries, illuminating the multiple pathways that are available to developing regions for industrial development, as well as how they affect the type and structure of the industry that evolve. In this first comprehensive study of the role of regional policies in the development of software industry in India, Rajendra Kumar explains the success of these states in terms of four critical factors: availability of adequate skilled labor and specialized infrastructure, pro-employer labor and policy reforms, ethnic linkages of immigrant professionals abroad who returned to establish firms in their native states, and their existing technological capabilities at the beginning of reforms. Contrary to common explanations in the literature, the state did not play a significant role in providing specialized R&D or finance to the industry. He also presents a new "Competitive Flexibility" model and shows that increasing globalization presents tremendous opportunities for developing regions to become globally competitive in a hi-tech field. This is an important book for all scholars and policy makers interested in economic development through high-technology-based industries.

This book was released on 2011-05-20 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the proceedings of the Second International Conference on Innovation through Knowledge Transfer, InnovationKT’2010, organised jointly by KES International and the Institute of Knowledge Transfer, and taking place in Coventry, UK on 7&8 December 2010. Featuring world-class invited speakers and contributions from a range of backgrounds and countries, the conference provided an excellent opportunity to disseminate, share and discuss the impact of university-business interaction through knowledge transfer in all its forms. There were two main motivations in initiating the Innovation through Knowledge Transfer series. The first aim was to provide the chance for publication on a subject where few opportunities exist already. The second motivation was to foster the development of a community from the diverse range of individuals practicing knowledge transfer. It is becoming clear that the delegates of the conference are drawn from a diverse community of practice. InnovationKT’2010 has succeeded in bringing together contributions from both the academic and practitioner sections of the knowledge transfer community. The programme contained seven invited keynote talks, 40 oral presentations grouped into eight sessions, and one interactive workshop. The proceedings contain 29 chapters drawn from this material. There were 91 registered delegates drawn from 10 countries of the world. The field of knowledge transfer is still immature, but these proceedings demonstrate that InnovationKT conference is making a significant contribution to its academic development.
Book Synopsis Managing Global Business Strategies by : John T McManus
Download or read book Managing Global Business Strategies written by John T McManus and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2008-08-30 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aimed at key decision makers and those responsible for global strategy, this book is about changing markets and the complexity of undertaking business in a fast paced technological and knowledge based age in a dynamic and strategic context. Trends show a renaissance in entrepreneurial activity that is fuelling innovation particularly in the so called BRIC nations of Brazil, Russia, China and India. For example, both China and India have benefited immensely from Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and as a direct consequence both nation states are reshaping the way global business is conducted and the way investment decisions are made. Evidence would suggest that Europe and the United States are more dependent on the BRIC trading nations for earnings and profits. Geographical distance is no longer a barrier between nations; however, the challenges of ethnic diversity in domestic markets are multiplied by the difficulties of delivering goods and services into global markets with different cultures and languages. This book examines the issues associated with undertaking global business in complex and knowledge related markets. Written by highly knowledgeable and well-respected practitioners and academics in their field Provides practical insight and realistic answers to global and strategic problems Progressive constructs of trends and thoughts to take the reader from the current paradigm to the broader yet application-specific view of global business

Book Synopsis Labour in Global Value Chains in Asia by : Dev Nathan
Download or read book Labour in Global Value Chains in Asia written by Dev Nathan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-13 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together a set of studies on labour conditions in global value chains (GVCs) in a variety of sectors, ranging from labour-intensive sectors (garments, fresh fruits, tourism), to medium and high technology sectors (automobiles, electronics and telecom) and knowledge-intensive sectors (IT software services). The studies span a number of countries across Asia - Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. This book stands out for its grounded and detailed examination of both what is working and what is not working as Asian labour gets more embedded in global value chains. In trying to identify spaces for progressive action and policies in the current GVC-linked global work environment, the book goes against the grain in searching for an alternative to laissez faire forms of globalisation.
