Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oil has long been and will continue to be at the centre of the global economy. This book explores the oil trade, energy (geo)politics, and new trends in regionalising or globalising the oil industry in the new era of international relations and economic competition. Energy pipelines carrying oil and gas from the well-head to the market, generally run through two or more states; and often from one continent to the other. This book maps the oil flowing through international and intercontinental pipelines and unravels the political, commercial and technological considerations behind the mapping of oil routes and forging of trade ties between nation-states. Through case studies from the major oil-exporting regions like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, the USA, Canada and Russia, it analyses the changing trends in their policies around oil trade, bilateral relations, energy, and security. It also considers the environmental protests around the continued dependency on oil, the teapot refineries under the Islamic State, investments, oil lobbies and insurrections to understand the broad picture of shifting regional and geopolitical realities and the scramble for vital resources. This comprehensive book will be of interest to students of the geopolitics of energy, international relations, security and strategic studies, energy studies as well as the media and with policymakers.

This book was released on 2020-06-16 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes energy security through the lens of oil and natural gas and explains how geopolitics and security challenges affect India’s quest for energy security. It also offers insights into India’s international trade and investment in the overseas oil and natural gas markets and discusses shale energy, adopting region-specific (Africa, West Asia, Central Asia, and LAC), country-specific (Russia and the US), maritime-specific (Arctic and South China Sea), and pipeline-specific (TAPI, MBI, IPI, and RCI) approaches to analyze India’s oil and natural gas trade and investment abroad. The introductory chapter examines energy perspectives in international relations and conceptualizes energy geopolitics and energy security from both international and Indian standpoints. The book also highlights the similarities and differences in the issues involved in the global oil and natural gas market, and India’s approach to these, offering a roadmap for holistic and integrated energy security through oil and natural gas. Since India’s energy trade and investment in the international oil and natural gas market are not free from the effects of political instability, corruption, environment crisis, militancy, terrorism, war, and geopolitical involvement and interference, the book investigates the nature and extent of the security threats and competition India faces in the oil and natural gas-producing countries while pursuing its trade and investments there. As major sources of energy, oil and natural gas are strategic assets, and energy security is one of the core areas of India’s foreign policy pursuits. As such, the chapters critically assess India’s energy policy and resource diplomacy, providing analyses of the issues raised, identifying the central arguments and presenting existing cooperations – with past examples where necessary. The book appeals to scholars and policymakers active in the fields of energy, political science, international relations, economics, foreign policy, peace and conflict, security and geopolitics, as well as non-experts interested in this topic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of India’s political, diplomatic and security challenges caused by the changing geopolitical and security dynamics in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Like many other countries, India has been deeply affected by the unrest in the Arab world. As India has several long-term economic, political and security stakes in the region, it has adopted extreme caution in its responses towards the developments in the MENA region since the beginning of the Arab unrest. This book examines India’s policy of non-intervention and opposition to military intervention in the internal and regional affairs of the MENA region. In response to the ongoing conflict, India has engaged with several regional organisations and multilateral forums to work together and find political solutions to the regional conflicts. The book also examines new developments, such as the rise of the Islamic State, and the new security challenges this has introduced. Despite the regional turbulences, the momentum of India’s engagements with the countries of the region has been maintained and India has been building mutually beneficial partnerships in diverse fields. In this context, the book examines the response, approach and the policies India has adopted to protect and promote its interests during the last ten years of unrest. This book will be of interest to researchers, students and policy makers in the fields of international relations, India’s foreign policy, Asian studies, international studies, comparative studies and area studies of the Middle East and South Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural gas has emerged as the most preferred fuel due to its inherent environmentally benign nature, greater efficiency and cost effectiveness. The demand of natural gas has sharply increased in the last two decades at the global level. In India too, the natural gas sector has gained importance, particularly over the last decade, and is being termed as the Fuel of the 21st Century. Out of the total production of around 87 MMSCMD, after internal consumption, extraction of LPG and unavoidable flaring, around 74 MMSCMD is available for sale to various consumers. Domestic production is likely to double by 2012. Natural gas deficit in India is fulfilled by means of imports in the form of LNG and huge potential lies in the form of multiple upcoming transnational pipelines. However pipeline imports seem to be unlikely before 2015. Regulatory reforms in the upstream gas markets since 1994 helped in augmenting domestic production. In next twenty years, under a range of energy scenarios, the gas market can be expected to grow faster than coal and oil. This paper's prime focus shall be on the physical and financial aspects of the Indian gas market. The Indian gas network in terms of infrastructure and layout will be looked into. The financial aspects will cover the raising capital, budgeting and pricing of gas from various sources. In addition to this some light will be thrown on the regulatory regime, transportation market and optimization of pipeline operation. PNGRB guidelines regulate the Indian gas market. For transportation rail, road, water and pipelines are used, but primarily gas transportation in India is carried out by pipelines and major imports are in the form of liquefied natural gas. Use of state of the art technology such as DCS and SCADA have become common practice and has aided in value addition of gas networks in India. India's wholesale gas market and competitive interstate transportation market have shown a steady advancement in the recent past and lucrative opportunities for growth wait in the future.

Book excerpt: Historically in India, gas has not enjoyed the same strategic significance as oil. That picture is gradually changing. India imports 82 per cent of its oil needs and aims to bring that down to 67 per cent by 2022 by replacing it with local exploration and alternative energy sources. Natural gas is set to play a key role, with ambitious plans to increase its share in the energy mix from 6.5 per cent to 15 per cent. Increasing natural gas usage can also help India overcome several challenges such as meeting its development objectives, fulfilling mitigation efforts on the climate change front, providing energy security while reducing fiscal imbalance and so on. Needless to say, it will also have a significant bearing on India's geopolitics. Edited by Vikram Singh Mehta, an authority in the energy domain, and with essays by a number of global experts, this anthology lays out a comprehensive roadmap for India's natural gas sector by analysing supply, demand, infrastructure, pricing, regulations, finance, technology, policy and a host of other issues. The Next Stop is an essential overview of the country's emerging energy sector in the twenty-first century
