Book excerpt: Angelo Roncalli was elected Pope in 1958 and in four and a half years, through summoning the Second Vatican Council and putting in hand a major revision of the code of Canon Law, had transformed the Roman Catholic Church. Through his personality and teaching, and his initiatives with world leaders, he gave the papacy a new vision and set before the Catholic Church a new version of its mission to the world. Today many people throughout the world see Pope John XXIII as one of the twentieth-century's most loved and influential figures.
Download or read book Displaced Archives written by James Lowry and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-02-17 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Displaced archives have long been a problem and their existence continues to trouble archivists, historians and government officials. Displaced Archives brings together leading international experts to comprehensively explore the current state of affairs for the first time. Drawing on case studies from around the world, the authors examine displaced archives as a consequence of conflict and colonialism, analysing their impact on government administration, nation building, human rights and justice. Renewed action is advocated through considerations of the legal approaches to repatriation, the role of the international archival community, ‘shared heritage’ approaches and other solutions. The volume offers new theoretical, technical and political insights and will be essential reading for practitioners, academics and students in the field of archives, cultural property and heritage management, as well as history, politics and international relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The focus of this book becomes more relevant to governance every day as rational and scientific thought flounders under the weight of post-truth politics and a welter of 'alternative facts'. Traditional values of openness, transparency and accountability also face new challenges from technical change. Recordkeeping informatics supports archiving processes and few challenges are of greater significance for the survival of humanity than the adequate formation of archives that serve spacetime management, mutual associations and life chances: the major elements of authoritative information resource management as defined by the sociologist Anthony Giddens.

Book Synopsis Archives and New Modes of Feminist Research by : Maryanne Dever
Download or read book Archives and New Modes of Feminist Research written by Maryanne Dever and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-28 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an era when the metaphor of the archive is invoked to cover almost any kind of memory, collection or accumulation, it is important to re-examine what is entailed—politically and methodologically—in the practice of feminist archival research. This question is central not only to the renewed interest many disciplines are showing in empirical research in archives but also given the current explosion of online social and cultural data which has fundamentally transformed what we understand an archive to be. Contributors in this collection are keen to mark out what may be novel and what is enduring in the ways in which feminist thought and feminist practice frame archives. Importantly, they engage with archives in their historical and political complexity rather than treating them as simple repositories of source material. In this respect, contributors are keenly interested in what it means to archive particular materials, and not simply in what those materials may hold for feminist researchers. The collection features established and emerging feminist scholars and brings together interventions from across such disciplines as history, literature, modernist studies, cinema studies and law. This book was originally published as a special issue of the journal Australian Feminist Studies.

Book Synopsis Research in the Archival Multiverse by : Anne J. Gilliland
Download or read book Research in the Archival Multiverse written by Anne J. Gilliland and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the past 15 years, the field of archival studies around the world has experienced unprecedented growth and archival studies graduate education programs today have among the highest enrollments in any information field. During the same period, there has also been unparalleled expansion and innovation in the diversity of methods and theories being applied in archival scholarship. Global in scope, Research in the Archival Multiverse compiles critical and reflective essays across a wide range of emerging research areas and interests in archival studies with the aim of providing current and future archival academics with a text addressing possible methods and theoretical frameworks that have been and might be used in archival scholarship. More than a collation of research methods for handy reference, this volume advocates for reflexive research practice as a means by which to lay bare the fuzziness and messiness of research. Whereas research in the form of published research papers and juried conference presentations provide a view of the study framed in terms of research questions and findings, reflexive research practice reveals the context of the study and chains of situations, choices, and decisions that influence the trajectories of the studies themselves. Such elucidations from the position of the researcher are instructive for others, who may be inspired to apply or adapt the method for their own research. *** "This book is a landmark publication on research in archival science, tracing the development of ideas in the discipline in part one, then exploring possibilities and pathways in the following chapters. It is essential reading on the evolution and progression of the discipline, particularly for every Masters and PhD student in archival science, whether looking for a deeper understanding of archival theory or inspiration on research design and process. It will be invaluable to all archival educators, but particularly to supervisors of research students." --Karen Anderson, Archives and Manuscripts, 2017 *** "The compilation reflects an array of directions in which research in the broadly defined area of archives is heading. While an ambitious collection, it in no way limits our understanding of the multiverse; in fact, quite the opposite, it hints at the notion that the multiverse may be limitless." --Library and Information Science Research 39 (2017) 159 (Series:?Social Informatics) [Subject: Research Studies, Digital Studies, Archival Science, History]

Download or read book The First XI written by Graham Hubbard and published by Wrightbooks. This book was released on 2007-04-30 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First XI identifies 11 of Australia's long-term top-preforming organisations and provides a comprehensive analysis of their winning framework. Taking its lead from the US bestseller Built to Last, The First XI uncovers the common elements that set Australian winning organisations apart. It also looks at how winning is different in Australia. Professor Graham Hubbard, Delyth Samuel, Graeme Cocks and Simon Heap, a team of respected business practitioners and academics, spent three years researching and analysing the organisations, following the rigorous methodologies used for Built to Last. Surveying 1000 CEOs and assessing identified organisations over a 20-year period using a variety of perspectives, they selected a final group of -long-term winning organisations - the First XI. In this second edition the authors also take a look at what has happened to the First XI in the years since their original study ended to answer a number of burning questions: Are the First XI still winning organisations? What does the strategic cycle in Australian organisations look like? What can you do to put your organisation on the path to being a winner? The winning framework identified in this book provides managers with a rigorous, comprehensive, challenging, but practical framework to improve their own organisation practice and performance. Will your organisation be selected for this book in 10 years' time?
