Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Texts of the Bible: St. Luke And she brought forth her firstborn son; and she wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a. Manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. - Luke ii. 7. There are not many texts in the Bible with which Christians, from the highest to the lowest, from the very aged to the young child who can but just speak, are more familiar than they are with this. We learn more or less about our Lord's cradle almost as soon as we are out of our own cradles. That one part of the gospel history we know, even when the rest has quite slipped out of our minds. Christ's mother and Joseph had been living at their home at Nazareth when, according to St. Luke's Gospel, orders were given for one of those censuses, or enrolments of the people, which were sometimes used in ancient days as a basis for the imposition of a poll-tax. In such cases, people were enrolled according to their ancestry and the region from which they originally came and thus it was that Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into J udeea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David; to enrol himself with Mary who was betrothed to him, being great with child. The little town - it was no more than what we should calla village - was crowded with people, many of whom had come for the same purpose and claimed the same exalted lineage; the inn or guest-chamber - there was rarely more than one in such small places - was already crowded; this carpenter and his young bride were people of no particular importance and needed no special consideration, still less did the unborn Child; and so, as there was no room for them among the human guests, they had to find shelter in the stable hard by, among the beasts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Texts of the Bible Comfort, says Mrs. Pearsall Smith, is pure and simple comfort, and it is nothing else. We none of us care for pious phrases, we want realities; and the reality of being comforted and comfortable seems to me almost more delightful than any other thing in life. We all know what it is. When as little children we have cuddled up into our mother's lap after a fall or a mis fortune, and have felt her dear arms around us, and her soft kisses on our hair, we have had comfort. When, as grown up people, after a hard day's work, we have put on our Slippers and seated ourselves by the fire, in' an easy-chair with a book, we have had comfort. When, after a painful illness, we have begun to recover, and have been able to stretch our limbs and open our eyes without pain, we have had comfort. When some one whom we dearly love has been ill almost unto death, and has been restored to us in health again, we have had comfort. A thousand times in our lives, probably, have we said, with a sigh of relief, as of toil over or of burdens laid down, 'well, this is comfortable, ' and in that word 'comfortable' there has been comprised more Of rest, and relief, and satisfaction, and pleasure, than any other word in the English language could possibly be made to express. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Complete Index to the Expositor's Bible We are in the first place, confronted by the fact of the permanent and inextinguishable life of the Bible. N o engrossment of the general mind with secularities, no change in the methods of thought, no discovery of science, and no achievement of literature puts the Bible out of court. It and it alone ministers to the perma nent and universal cravings of our being. Sir Thomas Browne puts it well: Men's works have an age like themselves, and though they outlive their authors, yet have they a stint and period to their duration. This only is a work too hard for the teeth of time, and cannot perish but in the general ames when all things will confess their ashes. The words are as true as when they were written, and they will be as true at any future period, however long this frame of things may last. We will not even quarrel with the thought that the Bible itself will come to be no longer needed, for we shall in the end be content to have no Scripture but the Living Word Himself. Now it is this which sharply distinguishes the Bible from every other book. There are, said one, three classes of books. There is. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Texts of the Bible This is a sublime sentence sentence with which the Bible opens. Will the sentences that follow be in keeping with the musical throb and stately massiveness of these opening words? Even when we regard the book simply as a monument of literature we find it impossible to conceive a more appropriate introduction than this: "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." Yet the end is not less majestic than the beginning: " And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth are passed away." How should we approach the study of a book which opens and closes with words of such sublimity? There is a sentence or two in the preface to John Wesley's first volume of sermons, in which the great evangelist gives us the secret of his method of Bible-study. "Here am I," he says, "far from the busy ways of men. I sit down alone; only God is here. In His presence I open, I read His Book; for this end - to find the way to heaven. Does anything appear dark or intricate? I life my heart to the Father of Lights. I then search after and consider parallel passages of Scripture, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. I meditate thereon with all the attention and earnestness of which my mind is capable. And what I thus learn, that I teach." To Wesley, then, there were two great realities - the visible Book, and its invisible but ever-present Author; and to a man of his training and susceptibilities the one would have been an enigma without the other. He saw God at the beginning of every section of Holy Scripture. Let us attempt to explain this great but difficult text by considering - I. The Creation. i. The meaning of "In the beginning," and of "the heaven and the earth." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Complete Concordance to the Old and New Testament, or a Dictionary and Alphabetical Index to the Bible: With a Concordance to the Apocrypha, and a Compendium of the Holy Scriptures Hugo de S. Charo, a reaching Friar of the Dominican order, who was afterwards a Cardinal, was the first who com piled a Concordance to t e holy Scriptures: he died in the year 1262. He had studied the Bible very closely, and for carrying on this great and laborious work the more successfully, we are told he employed five hundred Monks of his order to assist him. He framed an Index of all the declinable words, and referred to the places where they were to be found. This Latin Concordance has been frequently printed with improvements; and since that time works of this sort have been brought to much greater perfection than formerly. At first it was thought sufficient to specify the chapter wherein the word occurred, with these letters a, b, c, d, as marks to point out the beginning, the middle, or the end of the chapter. But after Robert St hens, in the year 1545, had divided the chapters of the Bible into verses, the verses likewise began to be numbered, and ihe letters in the editions of the Concordances to be suppressed. And' in 1555 this eminent Printer published his fine Concordance, wherein the chapters and verses are exactly distinguished. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Introduction to the Literature of the Bible I wish to explain that this volume is not an abridgement of my other work on The Literary Study of the Bible. There is necessarily much in common between two treatments of the same topic: but the purposes of the two are distinct. The larger work is intended for formal students; it is an illustration of literary morphology in the field of sacred Scripture. The present book is addressed to the general reader, whether more or less cultured; it avoids technicalities, and treats the matter of the Bible, approaching this from the literary side. In what sense I understand the word 'literary' - as distinguished from theological and critical - I have sufficiently explained in the opening section. Many things have convinced me that we are entering upon a new era of popular interest in the sacred Scriptures. My duties as a lecturer have brought me in contact with many different types of audiences in different parts of England and America. No single thing has impressed me more than the commonness of the remark - coming usually from persons who were neither uneducated nor irreligious - that the Bible (except for a few passages) had long been a sealed book to them, but that they were taking to it again. We have done almost everything that is possible with these Hebrew and Greek writings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
